SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A new program vows to help buy houses for teachers who are working on making it in San Diego.“It's not huge to a lot of people, but it's more space than we've ever had,” says Amy Noble as she takes us on a tour of the new house that she and her husband, Eric, bought in South Orange County. They’re high school educators and got married years ago, but home ownership seemed impossible for them. “The rent for apartments was so much that we really didn't have a good opportunity to save,” says Amy.RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Key saving steps helped renter buy her first home“We're the only private company right now that's focusing exclusively on educators,” says Nikki Lowy with Landed.Lowy says the company has already helped about 200 educators buy homes in expensive cities like Denver, Los Angeles and Seattle. Now, the company is making its way into San Diego.“[Teachers] are so important to the safety and well being and health of our communities and yet a lot of them don't see a future in the communities,” Lowy adds.Landed reportedly gives educators half the down payment for the house. In exchange, educators share 25 percent of the investment gain or loss with Landed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local casting director making it big in Hollywood after signing stars for a movie hitting theaters Friday.The movie, The Last Full Measure, is based on soldier William H. Pitsenbarger, Jr. who rescued more than 60 men during the Vietnam War. Casting Director Iris Hampton fell in love with the script the first time she read it, "I couldn't put it down, it was so beautiful." She was born and raised in San Diego in a military family and married a Marine Veteran, bringing the plot close to home.Hampton got into the business during a vacation to Hawaii. She said she went to the Magnum P.I. office and asked if they needed any help, "they said not right now, but why don't you come back in three months? So I came home, packed my bags and I went."Since then she's worked with big names like Chuck Norris and the Power Rangers. "I am going on my 28th and 29th season of that show," she said referring to the Power Rangers.Seven years ago she signed on to The Last Full Measure. The movie follows Pitsenbarger, Jr. during Operation Abilene in the Vietnam War. He descended from a helicopter while troops were under fire and rescued as many as he could, before he was killed.The film then follows the men who worked for decades to get Pitsenbarger, Jr. the Medal of Honor. "It ended up being 32 years they fought for him to get the medal of honor," she said."Pitts was a hero and a legend," Hampton said paratroopers idolize him.With a deep love and respect for the military, Hampton said this project is the pinnacle of her career.She signed stars like Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Irvine,Christopher Plummer, Ed Harris and the late Peter Fonda for the movie."I was just so proud and I am just so proud of each and every one of them," she said she can't wait for the movie to hit theaters so San Diegans can see it. 1856

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego high school math teacher has figured out that investing in a souped-up fire truck has endless returns in smiles.The engine rumbles and the siren sounds before a loudspeaker announces, "Happy Birthday to Pauley! We want to wish a Happy Birthday to Pauley!"She's a 1947 International made into a hot rod fire truck named Lil' Red. Tricked out like the toy models kids love, the big kid at the center of this story is Mira Mesa High School math teacher David Watson."And up popped this fire truck," said Watson. "It's just about the coolest thing I've ever seen. It's a hot rod fire truck and I thought, oh my gosh, I need to have this."Watson says he's long had a thing for classic cars and when he spotted Lil' Red for sale in an online post he plunked down a pretty "confidential" penny to make her his own. This from a man who gives lessons on the value of a buck."I also teach a class called financial math," said Watson. "I wrote curriculum for that. I changed the name to Math for Life because that makes more sense."Watson says it's things like how to open a checking account and maintain a budget. So, what did his students think of hot rod expense?"They thought I was crazy!" exclaimed David. "They thought I was stupid; don't spend your money on that. Why would you do that? At first, explained Watson for the pure joy of having a really awesome set of wheels, but then he got to know Lil' Red a little better."The siren works, it has multi sirens. It has a little warning horn, it has a big huge horn, big loud horn. I didn't even know it had it. I was like, I wish it had the loud horn but then I finally figured out, it's in the middle of the steering wheel."Then it hit him right in the middle of his heart, he had a celebration machine."Baby showers, engagements, birthdays, and half my birthdays are for people who are 60 and older," said Watson. "The oldest person I did a birthday for was a hundred."So far, he's added an unforgettable flair to more than 70 events — and he doesn't charge a dime."Some people will call me crazy," said Watson. "But it's a lot of fun. My brother usually goes with me and he brings his dog. and his dog is a wonderful, very friendly dog. And the kids love his dog."I say to him, "You must get a great kick out of this.""I never realized," Watson says. "I thought I would just love owning it. Every time I see it I say, wow, this is just so cool."The unforgettable memories for those he visits are pretty cool too.Watson says his presentations usually last 5 to 10 minutes and he's been keeping a safe distance with the pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine died Saturday night after being hit by a car in the Midway district. San Diego Police say the crash happened around 7 p.m. on the 2700 block of Midway Drive. According to police, the man in his early 20s left a bar in the area when he walked or fell onto Midway Drive before being struck by a car. Police are checking surveillance cameras in the area to identify the driver, who left after the crash. A woman who lives in the area says cars often speed on the road and that there are few places to cross the street.“Like almost a half a mile down, and so if you're gonna cross, you can either walk extra far or you can jaywalk'; a lot of people you do you see jaywalking,” Quinn Dekker told 10News. 736

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to selling fentanyl to a 26-year-old La Mesa woman who overdosed in 2018, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Uriah Odish, 28, was charged with Conspiracy to Distribute Fentanyl and faces 14 and a half years in prison with five years of parole.According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, "Odish sold more than 500 grams of what he knew to be fentanyl between 2017 and the day of the fatal overdose."Tiffany Hansen died from that fatal dose. Her mother Keri Cuppage said Odish apologized Wednesday, "he asked for forgiveness and said he was very very sorry that his decisions led to Tiffany's death."She replied, "my biggest hope is that the time served in jail will help him and he will be able to beat his addiction."She said Tiffany loved the beach and all things Disney. After she passed, Cuppage had her ashes formed into a sea turtle and placed at the Neptune Memorial Reef. The reef is an underwater memorial created to look like the Lost City of Atlantis, off the coast of Miami Florida.Cuppage said every day after Tiffany's death is a struggle. "Every time I get a joyful emotion, it's just a backwash of sad. Not a day has gone by that I haven't cried, that I don't miss her desperately."She urges everyone to stay away from fentanyl, saying death or sentencing your loved ones to a lifetime of sadness isn't worth the high. She said she wishes she could give out her phone number so she could be there for anyone debating using the drug so she could discourage them from making a mistake.The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration documented a surge in fentanyl-related deaths this year in San Diego County.In 2019, the DEA said 152 people died from fentanyl-related overdoses.
