SAN DIEGO (KGTV)--San Diego professor, life coach and community activist Starla Lewis shared some words of wisdom this presidential election. The following is an e-mail written by Lewis that's been shared around San Diego and beyond over the last several days:Katie Elizabeth White Boyd was born in 1880 on a plantation in Missouri and lived to be 100 years old. She lived through 21 presidencies. I was born in 1949, in a colored hospital, during legal segregation. I desegregated a school in Missouri and a school in California. I have lived through 13 Presidencies. As I think about the election, I am moved to share words of wisdom from my Great Aunt Kate and Myself, the things that she taught me and the things that I have learned.1. 4 Years “This too shall pass.”Whatever the outcome of the election, whichever candidate wins, they only have 4 years to influence what happens in the United States and the World.2. We the People “No one can stop you from being anything you want to be or doing anything you want to do but you.”We can be a government of all people, by all people and for all people when we exercise our voice beyond voting day.3. Treat All People With Respect “How you treat people speaks volumes about who you are and nothing about who they are.”Whether you are happy about the outcome or not, let us be an example of what you want to see in the world. The youth are watching. Teach them that we can win and lose with grace. The world is watching. Show them that we can accept the outcomes of our elections with civility.4. Come Together to Heal and Celebrate “A sorrow shared is half the sorrow. And a joy shared is twice the joy.”Connect with like minded people in a safe space that allows you to express your thoughts and feelings.5. Where there is breath all things are possible “It is what it is. It be what it be. And it do what it do.” Do not let the outcome of this election make you sick, violent, less human, helpless or hopeless.6. Love IS Remember that we are all BRILLIANT, POWERFUL, LIMITLESS, LOVE.Tap into the most powerful force in the universe and see the love in you. See the love in others. Magnify love. BE Love. 2164

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The San Diego Police Department's Eastern Division opened up their “Trunk or Treat Haunted Station” to more than 500 kids the Skyline neighborhood. Officers and community members helped to transform the station, and students from Morse High School played monsters in the haunted house. The tradition began four years ago, with the goal of connecting the community with law enforcement.  “It’s so safe. It’s so fun. The kids are having a blast,” one woman said, as her cousin played with the police equipment on display.Outside the station, sponsors gave out candy and snow cones. Officers allowed Trick-Or-Treaters to tour the inside of a SWAT vehicle and ride a police motorcycle. “When I was a child, we didn’t have a place like this to come to,” one woman said, as her grandchildren played inside the SWAT vehicle. “As I was growing up, they would say 'Don’t eat the candy. Things are unsafe.' But we’re so glad to be here because we know our kids are safe here.”Residents said this was exactly what the community needed-- An experience that not only keeps the streets safe, but builds good relationships between residents and law enforcement. “A lot of the kids said, 'I want to be a police officer when I grow up.' And that’s what we want. We want kids from this neighborhood to get interested in becoming a police officer,” Lt. Ernesto Servin of SDPD said.  1414

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The City of San Diego announced Friday it would be shutting down its reservoirs an additional weekday each month in response to a 3 percent citywide budget cut.10News heard complaints from Steve Gordenker and his buddies, all regulars at El Capitan Reservoir. “The summer months, I am here Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, every weekend,” Gordenker said. As competitive freestyle jet skiers, El Capitan is their home turf.“More time on the water equals results,” Gordenker said. When the City of San Diego announced it would be closing El Capitan on the first Friday of every month, they were devastated. “If we are not able to come on Fridays, then that limits us to two days a week,” Gordenker said. “And the problem is this is our only freshwater lake in San Diego County.”Their only other option is to visit San Diego Bay. Gordenker said salt water is much harsher on their jet skis and makes it costly to maintain. That is why they chose to practice at the freshwater reservoir.El Capitan is one of eight city-operated reservoirs that will be closed an additional weekday, starting July 1.The closures are as follows:Barrett – Closed the first Wednesday of each month.El Capitan – Closed the first Friday of each month (starting August 1, 2019)Hodges – Closed the third Wednesday of each month.Miramar – Closed the first Tuesday of each month.Murray – Closed the second Tuesday of each month.Otay, Lower and Upper – Closed the second Wednesday of each month.San Vicente – Closed the second Friday of each month.Sutherland – Closed the third Friday of each month.“It doesn’t even really make any sense,” El Capitan concessions manager Stacy Foster said.Foster works for an independent contractor, Rocky Mountain Recreation. They provide concessions for most of the city’s reservoirs. If the lakes close, Foster doesn’t get paid. “If they still have to pay the city workers and they are losing the revenue of the people that are coming in, they are not saving any money. They are losing money,” Foster said. According to a city spokesman, maintenance and water staff will keep their hours because their duties fall under a separate budget. However, recreation-related workers will be affected by the closures because their duties fall under the 3 percent general fund budget cuts.Out of the eight reservoirs, El Capitan is the only one to close starting in August.“It is going to start in July for the other lakes, but here we were able to push it to August because it’s Fourth of July weekend,” said Foster.Foster said their lake keeper was able to negotiate the start date since the closure would have fallen under one of the busiest weekends of the year. Still, she is worried that the sudden change in schedule will inconvenience regulars. “When they have a truck and a trailer with a boat on it, there is no place for them to turn around back there, so it is going to be a mess,” Foster said, pointing toward the gate.As for Gordenker, he said he is disappointed. But he said it could be worse. “They could turn the whole program off if they wanted, so we are fortunate to at least have two days.”The closures are in effect for the next year. 3174

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Thieves hit a well-known business causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. Bill Howe Plumbing, located on Aero Drive, had their work trucks vandalized as thieves steal gas from the gas tanks. Fleet manager Rhett Wheeler says the business has been targeted at least three times in the last month. “Its a shock that someone will crawl underneath a car with a drill, drill a hole in a gas tank, to steal a couple of gallons of gasoline,” says Wheeler. Thieves have damaged at least 10 vehicles, costing the family-owned company around ,000 in damages. “We end up losing a truck for two or three days per occurrence,” says Wheeler. Wheeler is urging everyone, including businesses, to check their vehicles of leaking gas before driving off. The company has reported the incidents to police. Managers are also working on more security measures for the future. 889

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Nearly 200 volunteers are working in Logan Heights fixing up homes for families. One of those volunteers is Alexandra Pasquale. She believes this isn't just about grabbing tools and doing work, this is about families in the community. She's glad she can help them, "create their own wonderful memories, providing an environment they can have family meals in." Pasquale is part of Realty Income. The real estate company has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity. They will build 11 homes. As teams they're building fences, painting, and installing plywood. Pasquale says knowing who they are helping makes all the work worth it."It makes me feel so great that we're contributing to our community in a positive way," said Pasquale. 751
