SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A man was arrested last month after allegedly using a body bag and gurney to steal from a deceased man’s home, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.On August 31st, around noon, sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check at a Spring Valley home and discovered a 60-year-old man dead inside.They say he died of natural causes and was transported to a mortuary by a contracted independent mortuary service.A couple of days later, the victim’s family reported missing items, including a gun and a safe. They then watched surveillance video from the home and learned it had been burglarized.The alleged burglary happened about 11 hours after deputies responded to the welfare check.In the video provided by the sheriff's department, you see a man, now identified as Sammy Willie Gates, rolling a gurney and body bag out of the house and into a white van.Detectives say the body bag was full of stolen items.Gates is the owner of Mortuary Transportation services, a contracted independent mortuary service; however, deputies say his company was not used to transport the victim’s body earlier.It’s unclear how Gates would have known the home was empty.Detectives from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station served a search warrant at Gates home in unincorporated El Cajon on September 9th.Inside, they found the victim’s safe and gun, along with 16 more firearms, two additional safes, jewelry, watches, war medals, comic books, thousands of dollars in collectible coins, and multiple personal identifying documents.Detectives also found a gurney and body bag matching the items in the video in Gate’s white utility van.He was arrested and charged with felonies, including Burglary of the First Degree and Receiving Stolen Property.Gates has prior felonies and is due in court for a preliminary hearing in January. 1857

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people were killed Tuesday night in two separate crashes on state Route 54 in the Paradise Hills area.At around 9:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said a male driver lost control of his pickup truck and overturned off westbound SR-54 near Reo Drive.According to the CHP, the driver and his three female passengers was ejected. The driver was then run over by a passing vehicle, the CHP said.The driver, who was not identified, was declared dead at the scene. The three women were taken to the hospital with injuries of unknown severity.About an hour after the deadly rollover, CHP officials said a Honda CRV slammed into the back of a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was stopped in the backup traffic on westbound SR-54 caused by the initial wreck.ABC 10News learned a passenger in the CRV died in the crash, but the driver left the scene and has not been located.The Silverado's female driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of major injuries.Both crashes are under investigation; the CHP said "alcohol/and or drugs are suspected factors" in the second collision. 1116

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – With Thanksgiving just days away, local health officials are seeing long lines at San Diego County COVID-19 test sites with many San Diegans hoping to get tested before the holiday.With the sudden surge of testing, some experts, such as UC San Diego Chief of Infectious Diseases Dr. Davey Smith, warn that getting a test is not enough to minimize the risk of spreading the coronavirus.“There’s a worrisome reason that people are planning to go visit their older relatives and they think they’re going to be 100 percent safe,” Smith said.Smith also said getting a test now could still give out a false negative result.“If I get tested now, it doesn't mean that I'm not infected, it just means that I'm not actively shedding the virus,” Smith told ABC 10News.On Monday, at San Diego International Airport, ABC 10News spoke to travelers who had the same thought.“I got tested about a week ago, just to make sure that everything is OK. And I know you can have it without having symptoms, so I did as much as I could to prepare before I came,” said Dana McLin.And along with getting a test, these travelers made sure they brought everything else they need to stay health while traveling this Thanksgiving holiday.Jan McLin said, “We are wearing our masks and we use hand sanitizers, sanitizing wipes, washing out hands constantly. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – With just hours until Election Day, several local law enforcement agencies are already on high-alert in the event that large demonstrations arise."We are comfortable with the staffing level we have for [Tuesday] and into the weekend,” SDPD Lieutenant Shawn Takeuchi told ABC10 News on Monday and added, “We're monitoring social media and any information available to the public about any groups that are planning to protest or celebrate.” He said San Diego Police Department is well prepared for any potential unrest although officers have no credible knowledge of plans for it. On Tuesday, SDPD will open its Department Operations Center (DOC) which is only activated during major events as a hub to filter and disseminate intelligence. “We are not fully staffing the DOC. We are putting it on a monitoring status [and] we feel that's prudent given the climate that we're in,” he added.“I think anxieties are very high all over the country,” San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore told ABC10 News on Monday. He said that his Department will be adequately staffed. “We fully respect everyone's right to peacefully demonstrate [and] to express their first amendment rights. However, when those peaceful demonstrations cross that line into criminal activity, deputy sheriffs and local law enforcement will be ready to act to keep everybody in the crowd safe so that they can express their legitimate first amendment rights,” he added.On Monday, California Highway Patrol told ABC10 News that its officers are being moved to 12 hour shifts. A statement reads, “The protection of state of California properties, including state buildings and state highways, is the primary responsibility and jurisdiction of the CHP. As a statewide law enforcement agency, the CHP has officers available to respond to any incident or a request for assistance by an allied agency through the mutual aid process anywhere in California. We are ready to respond should there be a problem that needs our assistance. As for the days leading up to election day, if a community member receives threats or intimidation intended to affect their vote, they are encouraged to give us a call. Threats of this nature will be investigated and be shared with the FBI who has been working on such issues nationwide.”The La Mesa Police Department states, “The La Mesa Police Department would like to assure the public that we are committed to the goal of facilitating a safe, peaceful and legal Election Day tomorrow. Our officers have been trained on the various laws pertaining to voting and polling places, and additional resources have been designated to respond to and handle any issues that may arise.”The El Cajon Police Department writes, “In response to your question, we would prefer not to release any particular plans or tactics related to the election. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  An ex-con who kidnapped a coach and a 16-year-old baseball player from a field in Kearny Mesa at gunpoint and made the man drive him to Ramona, where he carjacked a 79-year-old woman to make his getaway, was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus two other life terms.Ira Stringer, 48, was convicted last month of 13 felony charges, including kidnapping during a carjacking, kidnapping for extortion and assault with a firearm.Stringer has a long criminal history, including a 1997 conviction for a home-invasion armed robbery in Spring Valley in which he held a family overnight and threatened to kill them."You are the poster child for the three-strikes law," Judge Frederick Maguire told the defendant. "You've demonstrated that you're a danger to the community."Stringer was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery in Orange County when he was charged last year with abducting 27-year-old Dylan Graham and 16-year-old Jack Spencer from Hickman Field in Kearny Mesa, where Graham was giving the teenager a batting lesson on Dec. 23, 2015.Deputy District Attorney James Koerber said Stringer approached the victims holding a loaded .357 Magnum and demanded that he be driven to Ramona.Stringer told Graham that he had been in a gunfight and needed to get "far away," according to the prosecutor.During the 40-minute drive to Ramona, Stringer held the gun to Graham's head.Graham said he decided to do something, letting go of the steering wheel and jumping in the back seat in an attempt to get the gun away from Stringer.Graham said Stringer fired three shots, all barely missing him. The victim's car crashed, and was a total loss.Outside the car, Stringer acted like he was hurt and flagged down and carjacked 79-year-old Barbara Roulier and stole her car.Roulier, now 81, told Stringer she has forgiven him for what he did to her that day.Stringer robbed a convenience store in San Diego three days after the kidnapping and carjacking and a few hours after that, robbed a store in Orange County with a shotgun. 2083
