INDIANAPOLIS -- An abused dog that was shot and left for dead has a new lease on life after an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer and his wife, a paramedic with the Wayne Township Fire Department decided to step in and help. Officer Tim Elliott was on patrol when he came across the dog that had been shot in the face and doused in bleach. Wayne Township Fire Department Captain Mike Pruitt says Officer Elliott and his fellow officers rushed in to help and took the pup to the emergency vet to try and save him. "Still alive and wagging his tail, Tim and Tiffany couldn't let this little guy perish at the hands of a savage criminal owner," said Pruitt. Pruitt says the couple fell in love with the pup and decided to save him. The pup, who's been lovingly nicknamed "Winks,"  will need surgery to have his eye removed as well as other medical treatments from the damage his previous owner had done, The Elliott family is raising money to try to help cover those costs which are expected to exceed ,500. "Winks now has a forever home full of love and a "brother" (Gauge) to help him through this," said Captain Pruitt. In newly-released guidance from the CDC, the federal agency cautions front-line workers to avoid interacting with those who violently protest not wearing masks.This comes as many states now require masks to be worn in all public indoor locations, such as retailers and grocery stores. Despite state laws, many top retailers have already cautioned employees against enforcing mask rules.The CDC guidance encourages companies to provide training for employees on how to handle these situations.The guidance says that employees should not attempt to force anyone who appears upset or violent to follow COVID-19 policies. In the shadow of the Capitol dome Tuesday was a sobering display of thousands of pairs of shoes, organized neatly across the grass said to represent children who have died in the US from gunshot wounds since the Newtown elementary school massacre in 2012.The global advocacy group Avaaz has been collecting donated pairs of shoes for two weeks and early Tuesday morning lined them up one by one, 18 inches apart, in roughly 80 rows on the Capitol lawn, as Congress continues to sort through a debate over gun violence and school safety."Shoes are individual. They're so personal. There are ballet slippers here and roller skates. These are kids," said Nell Greenberg, the campaign director for Avaaz.The display feature 7,000 pairs of shoes. To arrive at that figure, the group cited a 2017 report from the American Academy of Pediatrics using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that found nearly 1,300 children die from gunshot wounds in the US every year.
