NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to recognise Nanjing City of China as a "Model for International Cooperation" in order to award the city's active involvement in cooperation with the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and this was the first Chinese city to win such an award, Li Jiansheng, executive chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday.The House passed the bill, tabled by Representative John Tierney of Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, Li said, adding that this will pave the way for further cooperation between China and the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are very conducive to build a stronger China in the future."I rise today to speak about a model for international cooperation that is said to hold promise and future opportunities for the United States," Tierney said when he was taking the floor at the House. "The City of Nanjing is working to improve the quality of life of its residents with a global initiative that has potential to create a great opportunity for some in the United States."For over a decade, Nanjing "has reached beyond the borders of the People's Republic of China to create new strategies in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, increasing the level of understanding between our two nations and stimulating U.S.- China idea exchange," he said."It is expected that this international cooperative initiative will inure to the benefit of the residents of Nanjing as well to the residents of the United States, including businesses, residents and educational institutions in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," he said.Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province in East China, has forged close ties of cooperation and partnership with Boston and Massachusetts in 2008. The city government has hammered out a series of programs to lure top talents from overseas."This is the first time for the U.S. Congress to recognize a model for a Chinese City for the partnership in entrepreneurship innovation, technology and education," Gene Hartigan, co-chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday."This will get great attention from leaders in Washington D.C. and become the model for cooperation in the future between the U.S. and China in partnership in these areas," he said. "Currently the US and Chinese government have a platform called Strategic and Economic Dialogue. This statement approved by congress will create a new dialogue in innovation and entrepreneurship between the US and China."

BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao left Beijing for Canada Wednesday afternoon to pay a state visit to the country and attend the fourth Group of 20 (G20) summit scheduled for June 26-27 in Toronto.Hu is invited by Canadian Governor-General Michaelle Jean and Prime Minister Stephen Harper.At this summit, G20 leaders will discuss ways to consolidate the recovery of the world economy and the reform of the international financial system in the aftermath of the global financial crisis.

NONG'AN, Jilin, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- With the approach of a new round of torrential rains, the country roads in flood-ravaged Nong'an County in northeast China were packed with villagers fleeing their homes Wednesday.Traveling aboard tractors, trucks, mini-buses, and motorcycles, and carrying belongings such as quilts and chicken, thousands of people set off on a journey of exodus.Up to 27,000 villagers living downstream from the Songhua River in Jilin Province need to be evacuated as downpours are expected to batter Nong'an from Wednesday evening until Friday, said Wang Wei, deputy Communist Party chief of the county."Fresh downpours may lead to the breach of riverbanks and two reservoirs upstream would have to open sluices to discharge water, which would threaten the lives of residents downstream," Wang said."The mass evacuation began in the early morning today. By now, 18,000 people have moved to safety. There are still 9,000 young villagers who were asked to stay and help fortify the riverbanks," he said in the late evening.Torrential rains pounded the county one week ago, swelling the Songhua River and inundating almost 50,000 hectares of cropland, or about half of the total farming area."I really don't want to leave my home. But the village officials told me: so long as you are still alive, you will have your home again," said Yu Shutao from Liansankeng Village."I will bring my family to go to my elder brother's home in the town. As soon as the floods recede, I will come home to attend my cropland," he said.Thirty-two-year-old villager Sun Lianhua sat in a mini-bus with her dog."The dog is like a member of my family. XI'AN, July 17 (Xinhua) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel continued Saturday her visit in Xi'an, capital of China' s northwestern Shaanxi Province.During the visit, Merkel and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with heads of prestigious German and Chinese firms, and visited China-German joint venture Siemens Signaling Company Ltd.Merkel also held a meeting with the acting Governor of the Shaanxi Province Zhao Zhengyong.Zhao said the Sino-German cooperation taking place in Shaanxi had enjoyed great achievements during recent years, as there had been about 60 Sino-German joint ventures operating in the province.Merkel said more and more German businessman were looking forward to getting involved in China's "West Development" campaign, and she believed the bilateral cooperation will be pushed forward in the future.The acting governor gave Merkel a horse sculpture as a birthday gift, for Merkel's 56th birthday falls on this Saturday.Merkel was born in the year of the horse, according to the Chinese traditional calendar.During her stay in Xi'an, Angela Merkel also visited a cultural theme park, and the renowned Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses in the mausoleum of Qinshihuang, the first emperor of an united China.Merkel will leave Xi'an on Sunday Morning and wrap up her four-day official visit to China.

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese spent less in June amid surging commodities prices and floods in many of the country's southern provinces, according to the latest reading of an index that gauges consumer confidence on Friday.The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index (BCCI), compiled by the Xinhua News Agency and the national bank card association China UnionPay, slid to 86.30 in June, down 0.09 points from May.Compared with the same period last year, the June BCCI figure was 0.24 points higher. The index hit a record high of 86.89 in March.The reading in June indicated Chinese bank card spending was affected by surging commodities prices and the floods in southern China.Consumers also turned more conservative in spending due to sluggish performances of domestic stock markets and property markets in June.China's month-on-month economic growth rate is likely to have slowed in June given signs that electricity demand declined remarkably that month and the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector dipped 1.8 percentage points for two months in a run to 52.1 percent in June.Xinhua and UnionPay jointly started compiling the BCCI index in April 2009 based on bank card transaction data and analysis of structural changes in urban consumption.
