BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has said that the government should stick to the pro-active fiscal policy and moderately loose monetary policy in the second half of this year to ensure a stable and relatively rapid economic development.Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks at a symposium held in Beijing Tuesday, with attendance of people from the non-communists parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, as well as celebrities without party affiliations.Other members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, including Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, also attended the symposium."We should strengthen our awareness of current risks and challenges the country is facing in economy, and firmly implement the central government's policies to ensure a stable and relatively rapid economic development," Hu said.Hu said the economy is developing in the right direction under the government's macroeconomic controls and the government would maintain the continuity and stability of its economic policies to make them more targeted and flexible according to new conditions.Further, more efforts should be made to strengthen economic forecasts and warning systems, as well as in the coordination of economic policies, Hu added.Hu asked for more efforts in the grain industry to achieve a good harvest this year and to improve control and relief work in combating floods and drought.

BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's domestic corn supply was adequate, and a recent price increase was the result of market speculation, a senior official told Xinhua Thursday.Shang Qiangmin, director at the China National Grain and Oils Information Center, said both the supply and corn reserves were adequate in China and the government was determined to regulate the corn market."Imbalance between corn supply and demand is a misjudgement," Shang said.Although floods that ravaged the country's northeastern regions in late July have caused adverse impacts on regional corn growing, final output was expected to increase from one year earlier due to the expanding of planting areas, Shang said."China has enough corn reserves to meet market demand," he said.The buying boom in the northeastern region is currently caused by enterprises' increasing corn stocks on speculation of price increase, he said.According to Shang, corn stocks at major grain enterprises in northeastern Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, increased by 5.12 million tonnes at the end of July compared with one year earlier.The Chinese government has strengthened macro control of corn market by increasing supply and cracking down on illegal activities that force up corn prices.As the world's major corn producer and consumer, China's annual corn production and consumption both exceed 150 million tonnes.

Some zoo animals died or struggled to survive by laying on ice.Also, a passenger bus caught fire in downtown Beijing and swarms of locusts blanketed a couple of dry prairies and grasslands in the north.The National Meteorological Center (NMC) raised the heat alert to orange on Tuesday, one step before the highest level, and said at least 16 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities were enduring the extreme heat.In Beijing, the temperature shot up to 40.6 degrees Celsius, breaking the city's early July heat record in more than 50 years. Further, the extreme high temperatures would continue in north, east and west China for the next 24 hours before rains begin to fall, the authorities said."Every day we have about 300 patients, 100 more than the average," Qin Jian, head of the emergency unit of Xuanwu Hospital in Beijing, said. BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The gross domestic product (GDP) in China's western regions grew by 13.5 percent year on year in 2009, much higher than the country's revised national GDP growth of 9.1 percent, according to a report issued here on Saturday.It is the eighth year in a row for these regions to score a double-digit GDP growth after the Chinese government launched a "West Development" campaign ten years ago, read the report on the economic development of China's western regions issued by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.It attributed the GDP growth mainly to China's policies to stimulate domestic demand and the increase in investment, despite the global financial crisis.Five provinces, regions or municipalities saw an increase of more then ten percent in the disposable income of urban citizens in 2009, as the income gap between China's western and eastern regions had begun to narrow, the report said.The average yearly per capita disposable income of urban citizens in the western regions was 12,971 yuan (about 1,918 U.S. dollars) in 2008.Noting that economic development in the western regions still heavily relied on natural resources, the report said efforts should be made to increase the regions' capacity to ensure sustainable development, while establishing a low-carbon industrial system.
