BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday called for more efforts to boost economic growth in its western regions.     Premier Wen Jiabao chaired a meeting of the leading group under the State Council for the development of China's western regions. Vice Premier Li Keqiang also attended the meeting.     The meeting discussed and passed a guideline on maintaining stable and fast economic growth in the western regions amid the global economic downturn.     The government would carry on with its policy to develop the western regions as the policy proved effective in boosting economic and social progresses there in the 10 years since its launch. It would work to add more job opportunities, improve people's living conditions and upgrade education and medical services.     The meeting also stressed efforts to help rebuild the areas destroyed by the strong earthquake in May 2008. BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC)and the government are to deepen the educational campaign on national unity, Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, said Monday.     At a televised conference held by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Education, and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission in Beijing, Liu said strengthening education on national unity was necessary "for safeguarding national unification and opposing separatism", as well as "for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation." Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau and the CPC Central Committee Secretariat, addresses the televised conference held by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Education, and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission to deepen the educational campaign on national unity, in Beijing, China, on Aug. 24, 2009    Liu called for the educational campaign to be combined with the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     The campaign should highlight the fact that national unity serves the supreme interests of all Chinese people from different ethnic groups, he said.     China's regional autonomy system was one of the country's basic political systems that was appropriate for the country's realities and could resolve ethnic problems, said Liu, also a member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau.     The history of China was a history of unity and progress for the Chinese nation, while the past 60 years had witnessed great achievements and changes in ethnic regions, he said.

BEIJING, July 25 (Xinhua) -- China issued alert on 8 p.m. Saturday for flood in the country's Hunan and Jiangxi provinces which left dozens people dead or missing and displaced hundreds of thousands, and sent relief groups to the two provinces.     As of 4 p.m. of Saturday, five people were killed, 10 were missing and about 64,000 were relocated by the widespread heavy rain in Hunan since July 23, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters. BEIJING, Sep. 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao put forward four proposals for improving ties with Central Africa when meeting with his counterpart Francois Bozize Yangouvonda Thursday.     "China attaches great importance to the friendship with Central Africa, and we are willing to work with Central Africa to create a new era for our bilateral ties." Hu stressed.     Hu made four proposals for the enhancement of bilateral ties during the meeting.     First, Hu said, the two countries should cement the political foundation of bilateral ties and strengthen communication and coordination on major issues and important affairs. PHUKET, Thailand, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi underlined here Wednesday the importance of tapping new areas of economic growth so as to enhance cooperation between China and the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN).     Yang noted that one area of development is to implement plans to enhance agricultural productivity by drawing on advanced technology and to accelerate the cooperation on new and renewable energies. The ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers' Meeting is held in Phuket, Thailand, on July 22, 2009."We have maintained high-level exchanges, enhanced political mutual trust, shared development experience and strengthened confidence in cooperation," Yang said at the China-ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Wednesday afternoon.     China and ASEAN have completed negotiations on the China-ASEAN Investment Agreement, paving the way for the full establishment of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) in 2010.     The ASEAN on Monday appreciated China's active role in developing transportation infrastructure between the two sides and welcomed the establishment of the 10 billion U.S. dollar fund for bilateral investment cooperation.     In April, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said that China has decided to set up a 10 billion U.S. dollar "China-ASEAN Fund on Investment Cooperation" to support infrastructural development in the region.
