Many children are now schooling from home and their screen time is reaching pandemic proportions.Between online learning and self-isolation, school-aged kids that are homebound are inevitably spending more time with their digital screens. And doctors say students are paying a price, citing an uptick in everything from eye strain to migraines."I feel that a lot of kids today have more dry eye,” said Dr. Kim Le, Pediatric Ophthalmologist at Henry Ford Health System. “They’re complaining that they’re blinking a lot, or I don’t know, their eyes are tired. Headaches as well.”These digital bright lights are taking discomfort to new heights. “Sometimes that act of focusing can cause headaches,” Le added.Perhaps no one knows that more than Kelly Billings’ 8-year-old twins and her teenager.“They have headaches, more often than they used to,” said Billings. “And randomly, eye pain, almost as if their eyes are straining.”The Michigan mother is especially worried about her daughter, a regular migraine sufferer, who pre-pandemic battled a migraine every three months. "But with virtual schooling, she has one at least every week,” said Billings. “I definitely know it affects her concentration.”Trisha Rowe’s 8-year-old son, Vedder, is enduring the same battle."He will come up to me and say, 'mom, my head hurts here.' He says it feels like someone’s hitting his head."Doctors say the best way to curb eye strain and headaches for children and adults alike is by adhering to the 20-20-20 rule. How does it work?Every 20 minutes take a 20-second break and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away.Trisha says her son’s school has been building in what they call “brain breaks” but she’s also doing her part, making sure his computer is eye level and that he has enough space so he can look away and do his work without staring at the screen. But doctors say it’s hardly just about minimizing strain during school hours. You can’t control what the teacher makes you, but you can control the screen time outside of school and additional screen time from TV watching, video gaming, and handheld device usage has made eye health far worse. Here’s a Rebound Rundown on what you can do to help:Limit your child’s screen time use by re-focusing their free time to more outdoor play and board gamesLow light environments can help alleviate eye strain. Lower the brightness of the screen on your home TV, computer, and other digital devicesEncourage your child to eat, stay hydrated and get ample sleep- which helps minimize the severity of the symptomsOne more thing, encourage your child to hold any kind of digital media as far away from their face as possible. Eighteen to 24 inches is ideal. This story was originally published by Ameera David and Tracy Wujack at WXYZ. 2781

Microsoft took legal steps to dismantle a system that has allowed criminal hackers to infect more than a million computing devices since 2016, in order to protect the 2020 election. The technology company obtained a court order from a federal judge in Virginia that gives Microsoft control of the Trickbot botnet.Microsoft, along with partners around the world, were able to make it so those operating Trickbot cannot initiate new infections or activate ransomware already in computer systems.Trickbot botnet is a global network believed to be run by Russian-speaking criminals, and is “one of the world’s most infamous botnets and prolific distributors of ransomware” according to a blog post by Tom Burt, Corporate Vice President at Microsoft.Burt says ransomware is “one of the largest threats to the upcoming elections,” and can be used to “infect a computer system used to maintain voter rolls or report on election-night results, seizing those systems at a prescribed hour optimised to sow chaos and distrust.”The move by Microsoft represents a “new legal approach” the company says they are using for the first time.In addition to protecting election systems, Microsoft says dismantling Trickbot will also protect financial services institutions, government agencies, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and other businesses subject to malware infections. 1382

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- One former police officer has been charged in the Breonna Taylor case, but that doesn't mean it's the end of investigations.People across the country have been following the case of Taylor's death, and many wanted to see the officers involved face criminal charges. Demonstrations were held Wednesday night in Louisville and other cities after it was announced former Louisville Metro Police Department Detective Brett Hankison's charges of wanton endangerment are not directly related to Taylor's death. Additionally, two officers who fired shots the night Taylor was killed will not face criminal charges. They do still face another investigation, though. The Courier-Journal reports that the Louisville police department is conducting a Professional Standards Unit investigation to determine whether they and four other officers violated police policy or rules during the raid. The results of this internal review could lead to disciplinary action. Also, the FBI is conducting an investigation that could result in civil rights violations.Governor Andy Beshear is calling for the details of the state's investigation to be posted online by Attorney General Daniel Cameron."I trust Kentuckians. They deserve to see the facts for themselves, and I believe that the ability to process those facts helps everybody," said Beshear.Taylor's case is one of many that became a focus in the conversation about police reform. Attorney General Cameron says he'll form a task force to look at Kentucky's search warrants' policies. In Lexington, protesters have called to ban no-knock warrants, just like in Louisville. This story was originally published by Alex Valverde at WLEX. 1694

MEXICO CITY— The U.S. State Department has issued a travel warning for Mexico following reports that eight bodies were found in the resort town of Cancun.According to Newsweek, the bodies of a man and woman were found in the trunk of an abandoned taxi early Monday, and the bodies of two other men were found dismembered in plastic bags at a nearby location.A fifth man was reportedly found bound and shot to death on Tuesday, a sixth man was "murdered in a hammock," a seventh person was shot and left covered by a bag, and the eighth victim was found decapitated in a Tres Reyes neighborhood. 607

Many voters have already cast their ballots, but that doesn't mean we'll know the election results right away. Experts say all of the ingredients are there for this election to be highly contested.“There are a lot of different reasons why the election may not be decided by the morning of November 4, and a lot of lawsuits may start to fly once that happens,” said Claire Finkelstein, law professor and director of the Center for Ethics and the Rule of Law at the University of Pennsylvania. With a record number of ballots coming in by mail, Finkelstein says the counting period will be lengthy. If a candidate declares victory on election night, but then more results come in, there could be calls for recounts, especially in states where the results are close. That could mean litigation over the counting procedures. Each states' elector will cast their vote on December 14. Then Congress meets on January 6 to count those votes and name the winner. If no candidate has a majority of the electoral votes, or if the counting period goes on and the election is still undecided, it is possible that the House of Representatives must decide.Finkelstein says that would be extraordinary and complicated.“It would likely be very contested as well, but one way or another by January 20, there needs to be a new president being sworn in,” said Finkelstein. The professor says this election is also entangled with the new Supreme Court justice.Like for Pennsylvania, which could now see a new decision on allowing mail-in ballots received up to three days after Election Day, the Supreme Court could also be involved in recounts, as happened in Florida in 2000. 1659
