President Donald Trump's stance on guns has not wavered a day after he set up a meeting with National Rifle Association officials, the White House said Friday.Trump and Vice President Mike Pence met with Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA's lobbying arm Thursday evening, who quickly tweeted that Trump and Pence "don't want gun control."That's an apparent shift from Trump's comments during a meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers Wednesday, when he signaled his support for policies -- such as strengthening background checks to raising the minimum age to buy certain guns and taking guns away from the mentally ill -- that are vehemently opposed by the gun lobby.Asked if Trump's thinking has changed since Wednesday's meeting, Sanders said, "not that I'm aware of." She said the only specific promise Trump made to the NRA was that "he'll support the Second Amendment. That's not something that he's backed away from. Ray Chavez, the nation's oldest survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, has died, the White House says. He was 106.The veteran passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, CNN affiliate KFMB reported, citing a family statement.Chavez was a quartermaster stationed in Pearl Harbor at the time of the Japanese attack on Hawaii that launched America's entry into World War II in 1941.He lived in Poway, California, with his family but gained prominence in recent years as he traveled around the country, attending memorial services and commemorations. Earlier this year, he met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office ahead of Memorial Day."Ray was honored to have served his country and to fight among heroes and loved meeting his fellow comrades," his family said in a statement. "He cherished his time going to talk to the kids at schools because he doesn't want them to forget Pearl Harbor."As his health declined in recent months, he wished to be buried at the Miramar National Cemetery, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. 1044

Vanessa Guillen on July 29 prior to the #IamVanessaGuillen bill being released.The family is planning to introduce the bill to Congress on July 30. The family will also hold a press conference.The family says the bill would protect soldiers to make sure what happened to Spc. Guillen doesn't happen again.Spc. Guillen's remains were found last week near the Leon River in Texas.The soldier went missing from Fort Hood back in April.Her family believes Vanessa was sexually harassed by Spc. Aaron Robinson. Fort Hood officials say Robinson was the military suspect and died by suicide.Cecily Anne Aguilar, a civilian, was arrested and charged in connection to Vanessa's disappearance. RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) — A 53-year-old cyclist remains on life support after a hit-and-run crash in Ramona.Michelle Scott was biking to work Wednesday morning on State Route 67 when California Highway Patrol says a driver swerved onto the shoulder and hit her. Scott was wearing a helmet and had lights and reflective gear on her bicycle, her husband said."It was impossible not to have seen her," Don Scott said.RELATED: Bicyclist airlifted after being hurt in hit-and-run crash in RamonaThe crash happened on SR-67 north of Dye Road around 6:30 a.m.Investigators say the driver was in a black 2019 Ford Edge. They've since learned the vehicle had stolen license plates.CHP says the driver sped off from the crash site with Michelle's bicycle still lodged in the front grill, but Don isn't letting anger seep in."Anger is not going to help the recovery process," he said. "I'm actually most focused on the recovery of my wife."Both he and Michelle are Community Emergency Response Team volunteers through FEMA and the Ramona Fire Department, with training to respond to disasters."It's hard to accept the different stages of grieving when you already know them but you're the one that's going through the grieving," he said.Michelle was sent flying into the roadway after the crash. Several bystanders, including a nurse, stopped to help."I was just informed today by the doctors that had it not been for the people stopping, the Good Samaritans, the outcome could have been even worse than it already is," Scott said.Both the family and CHP are hoping a tip from the public will provide a break in the case.
