SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Memorial Day weekend will see the most travelers out and about than in the last 12 years.More than 41.5 million Americans will be traveling this weekend, a five percent jump from last year, according to AAA. The increase in nearly 2 million travelers also means longer delays. Transportation analytics company INRIX predicts travel delays could be up to three times longer than normal in some areas of the country.The worst times to hit the roads, rails, or the sky will be Thursday and Friday, as commuters and weekend travelers mix, AAA says.BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT: Check updated San Diego traffic conditions"Drivers should expect congestion across a greater number of days than in previous years, with the getaway period starting on Wednesday, May 23. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - If you couldn't work, how far could you go without a paycheck? No one is immune to an unexpected injury or illness, and the financial hit can be devastating. The Social Security Administration (SSA) reports that one in four of today's 20-year-olds will become disabled for 90 days or more before retirement age. Having a plan for the long term can relieve a lot of stress if the unexpected does happen.One option is disability insurance; there's short-term and long-term. Disability insurance pays a portion of your income if you are suddenly unable to work because of illness, injury, or accident.You can get coverage through an employer or buy it from an insurer. According to State Farm, long-term disability insurance:Pays monthly income directly to you when you're unable to work because of a covered total disability.You choose the length of time you must be disabled before you start receiving benefits (Elimination Period) and the length of time you would receive benefits.Options include a five-year benefit period or a "to age 67" benefit option.Maximum monthly benefit amounts range from 0 to ,000, based on your income and occupation. You can customize your coverage with different riders.While different factors affect the cost, the annual price for a long-term disability insurance policy generally ranges from 1% to 3% of your annual income.According to the Council for Disability Awareness, 34.6 months is the duration of the average long-term disability claim.The nonprofit helps prepare people for unexpected injury through its five-step financial plan to give you a clearer understanding of your financial "big picture," including:Your sources of income, monthly expenses, and lifestyleThe impact a long-term disability could have on themPreparing a plan of action to address the crisisResources after life-changing disabilityMost people never expect a life-changing disability will happen to them, including San Diego resident Kat Blue. Blue was rear-ended at a red light on Feb. 1, 2018, and had previous head injuries before that."This one resulted in a concussion that just never went away," said Blue.A few weeks after the accident, Blue realized she could barely complete simple tasks like writing an email or talking on the phone. She suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), which would change her life forever. She constantly deals with nausea, dizziness, tetanus, and migraines. Blue has struggled to navigate the healthcare system and because she cannot work is constantly seeking resources so she can remain in San Diego."You have to advocate for yourself because there's no one within the system who is going to do it for you," said Blue. Blue says she does not have the resources to relocate and says San Diego offers a lot of support for TBI survivors. She's relied on Medicaid for medical care, which has helped with resources like a nurse care manager, but she says there are holes in the system."I'm still fighting to get a TBI specialist, I'm still trying to get a lot of the treatments and specialists and therapies that I believe could help me," said Blue. The San Diego County Health & Human Services Agency is ready to help San Diegans whose incomes have been impacted by an unexpected disability:CalFresh: Food assistance:Medi-Cal: Free or low-cost health coverage for children and adults with limited income and resources. If you qualify, you can enroll in Medi-Cal year-round.CalWORKS: Public assistance program that provides cash aid and services to eligible families that have a child(ren) in the home."You may not need our benefits today, but in the future, if you do we're here, and we encourage everyone to apply," said Rick Wanne, Director of Eligibility for the County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency.Wanne says the County also has a close relationship with 211. "211 is a great resource for a number of reasons, they can provide general information over the phone about a whole variety of resources here in San Diego, additional food assistance, housing resources, where to find a local medical provider," said Wanne. Wanne said in addition to what the County offers many local nonprofits and other entities provide help.Blue says she's found the following resources helpful when advocating for herself:Legal AidCalifornia Department of Rehabilitation (DOR)Disability Rights CaliforniaBlue says she's also taken advantage of recreation opportunities through Sharp, some of which are free. Sharp also offers support groups for people with various disabilities. Another program that's been instrumental in Blue's recovery is Love Your Brain Yoga, a free program for TBI survivors. "A good part of my day is spent just trying to feel better, just trying to get well enough to do what I need to do that day," said Blue.Blue remains hopeful she'll get the care needed for her healing and says she'll continue to do everything possible to stay in the city she calls home. 4971

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s more affordable to rent than buy a home in San Diego, according to a report released Thursday. The 2020 Rental Affordability Report consisting of census data compiled by ATTOM Data Solutions broke down the figures for counties nationwide. Although the price of owning a median-priced three-bedroom home was more affordable than renting in 53 percent of U.S. counties studied, renting was a better financial decision in highly populated suburban or urban areas. RELATED: San Diego expected to be California's hottest housing market in 2020, despite coolingIn counties with a population of more than one million people, including San Diego, renting was a more affordable option 84 percent of the time. Los Angeles County and the counties of Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Seattle were also included in the figure. San Diego made the list of major counties where rents consume the highest percentage of average wages. 1. Santa Cruz County: 82.1 percent2. Marin County: 75.3 percent3. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In a follow-up to a Team10 story from last week about sexual harassment allegations at a local nonprofit, the man who is accused is coming forward to try to clear his name.  Last week Team10 aired an emotional interview with San Diegan Angelique Williams, who claimed that Gregory Hamilton, a former teacher who works as a local pastor, repeatedly harassed her with unwanted sexual advances. Hamilton is now firing back. "Read my lips. There has never been sexual harassment with Angelique Williams on any day on the face of this earth," he tells us. After cancelling on us multiple times before our original story aired, this week he finally agreed to do an on-camera interview to share his side of the story.  Williams was an adult student at San Diego's Second Chance nonprofit training program, where Hamilton was her job training instructor. He also works as a pastor at Uptown Church of Christ. The church's website reads it first congregated under his leadership in 2009.  When we asked the nonprofit about the sexual harassment allegations, they sent back a statement that read in part, "We agree that what happened to Ms. Williams should not happen to anyone." It also read, "He was later terminated." In the new interview, Hamilton tells us he never received anything from the nonprofit saying he was charged with sexual harassment. He says that before his termination, he had been threatening legal action against the nonprofit. "[It was] about the disparity of the treatment of African American people that come [to the nonprofit] compared to Latino people for assistance," he says. Hamilton showed us a letter that he says he got from the nonprofit. It explains how he was terminated for not meeting the requirements of a performance improvement plan. There is no mention of harassment. In our initial story, he sent us a copy of another letter that he says he got from the nonprofit. It was a confidential separation agreement with a severance payment of ,760.00. There was also no mention of harassment. When we had asked Second Chance about the separation agreement and severance, they declined to comment, citing privacy issues.  Williams firmly believes Hamilton sexually harassed her. She says he'd inappropriately touch her, repeatedly call her, and send suggestive text messages.  Hamilton maintains it was Williams who advanced on him. Not the other way. He says his only intention was a friendship. He would not show us most of the text exchanges between the two of them, adding he would save those to show in court.   We asked Second Chance for an explanation as to why harassment was not included as a basis for the termination in the letter he showed us. As of air time this Wednesday, Second Chance wrote it was unavailable for comment.Below is one of the statements Second Chance issued to us before the original story aired. "Second Chance strives to ensure all members of our community have the means to achieve self-sufficiency, regardless of gender, age, race, or criminal history. Our organization maintains and adheres to a zero-tolerance policy for harassment and takes appropriate measures, including maintaining written policies, providing training, and promptly addressing any allegations made to the organization to ensure all individuals are provided an environment that is professional and free from harassment. Additionally, all potential employees undergo multiple pre-employment screenings, and state and federal background checks must be satisfactorily completed before an individual begins working for our organization. The situation in question was promptly addressed by the organization in full accordance with our policies. Out of consideration for the privacy interests of those involved and our legal obligations, we cannot further comment on the specifics of this situation."  Hamilton sent us a text on Wednesday stating he plans to start a support group called #NotMe for men and women who have been accused of offenses they did not commit and subsequently suffer psychologically, emotionally, financially and socially.  4713
