EL CAJON (CNS) - A man who drove drunk and at high speed down a curving Campo roadway, causing a crash that killed his two passengers, was convicted Wednesday of second-degree murder and other charges.Ryan Renz, 26, faces up to 30 years to life behind bars when he is sentenced Dec. 20 for the Jan. 25, 2017, crash that killed his friends, 23-year- old Johnny Ray Meyer Jr. and 26-year-old Dillon Cody Wiltfong.Prosecutors said Renz -- who was on probation and driving on a suspended license due to a prior DUI conviction -- was drunk when he crashed Wiltfong's Volkswagen Jetta into a tree on Buckman Springs Road, near Lake Morena Drive, in the evening hours of Jan. 25.RELATED: Campo crash leaves two dead, driver facing chargesOne of the victims was ejected and the other was trapped inside the vehicle. Renz suffered minor injuries.Deputy District Attorney Laura Evans said Renz and the victims drank throughout the afternoon of Jan. 25 before the defendant got behind the wheel and drove somewhere between 85 to 96 mph down Buckman Springs Road, then crashed the Jetta into an oak tree. The passenger's side of the sedan -- where both Meyer and Wiltfong were sitting -- took the brunt of the crash, according to the prosecutor.Evans said the high speed of the Jetta caught the attention of Border Patrol officers stationed near the scene, some of whom pursued the sedan, but were unable to stop it before the crash. Officers arrived to a "very violent scene," in which the Jetta was found overturned and on fire, Evans said.Mechanical issues were ruled out as a potential cause of the crash by California Highway Patrol investigators, according to the prosecutor. 1677

(KGTV) -- New details emerged Monday in a warrant released after a man is accused of poisoning his wife.A search warrant revealed that the woman had been sick for months and had no idea what was going on with her.According to the warrant, the young mother began to feel sick in September, then started feeling better before her condition worsened in January.She suffered hair loss, no longer had the strength to walk or open a door and had to be helped around by family members and her extremities even became like dead weights, according to the warrant.RELATED: East San Diego County man suspected of poisoning his wife with Thallium The warrant goes on to say that she suffered major loss of use of her extremities and was near death.Doctors determined that she received thallium poisoning by oral ingestion. Thallium is a chemical element used in rat poison and ant killers.Investigators determined that the poisoning could have only been done by someone with personal access to the food and drinks she consumed.According to the warrant, her husband Race Remington Uto, 27, had the most access to commit the crimes.Investigators searched the couple’s home in Dulzura and confiscated laptops, a coffee blender, four cups and other electronics.The warrant also shows that Race had an affair while he was deployed in the Navy and that the couple had gone through counseling.Race told detectives he has no idea how his wife came into contact with the poison. She also said she had no idea who would want to hurt her.The warrant shows the victim thought she may have been exposed to the poison while working in an old school building. 1661

During the initial onset of the coronavirus pandemic, pediatric hospital visits dropped 42%, but in the months following, mental health visits by school-aged children jumped, according to new CDC data.According to data released by the CDC, the proportion of mental health–related visits for children aged 5–11 and 12–17 years increased approximately 24%. and 31%, respectively since March.“These findings provide initial insight into children’s mental health in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight the importance of continued monitoring of children’s mental health throughout the pandemic, ensuring access to care during public health crises, and improving healthy coping strategies and resiliency among children and families,” the CDC said.The CDC said that many children receive mental health services through schools and community services. EL CAJON (CNS) - A 49-year-old man was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle in El Cajon Saturday.The pedestrian was hit crossing the road by a Toyota pickup in the 400 block of Jamacha Road around 6:25 p.m. Paramedics found him unconscious but breathing with serious head and leg wounds, authorities said.El Cajon police say the driver remained at the scene and isn't believed to have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.Sgt. Steve Paz of the El Cajon Police Department said Jamacha would be closed between Lexington and Sunnyland avenues until around 11:30 p.m., and reminded pedestrians and motorists to always be aware."Only cross the street at designated, controlled intersections, and wear bright or light-colored clothing for visibility," he said, addressing people out and about at night on foot. "For those driving vehicles during hours of darkness, please pay extra attention to the roadway and be aware of pedestrians that may be crossing." 980

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. -- You can't even step foot inside Paul and Jenny Fisch's home without wearing a breathing mask. Their dream home was destroyed after they thought the house was sold."I mean, there was just no words... the feces and the urine spread all over our white cabinets, all over our hardwood floor, it was even on the ceiling - 10-foot ceilings," said Jenny Fisch, the homeowner.The Fischs put their home on the market for 0,000 and the first offer they received was for full asking price. They were elated but there was a catch, the buyers wanted to rent the home with the promise they would close in three months."We were told these people were 100 percent qualified, there was no question about it," said Jenny Fisch.Everything seemed to be fine and they had no reason to doubt the offer. The realtor drafted up a contract with information about the loan and a closing date of January 31, 2018. The deadline came and went without the buyers closing on their home even though they were already living in it."What do we do? The only thing we have left to do is start an eviction," said Paul Fisch.The couple even attempted to work out a new deal with the would-be buyers so they could continue renting and eventually purchase the home. The buyers stopped paying rent and they had no choice but to evict them. It wasn't a quick process. Paul and Jenny Fisch weren't prepared for what they were about to find when they showed up to their home with a sheriff's deputy to finally kick the people out."When she walked out her face was like, 'it's bad," said Paul Fisch.Floors were covered in urine, there was feces everywhere and the smell was overwhelming. The house was absolutely filthy and completely trashed."And I lost it, I just lost it. I was like, 'I don't understand why we have to go through this.' I mean we hired people and now my beautiful dream home is covered in feces and I don't know how we're going to fix it," said Jenny Fisch.The buyer was pre-approved for a loan but only if he completed a program and improved his credit score. The lender said that never happened. This information was not made available to the Fischs and they only found out after the deal fell through.The couple said their agent and the buyer's agent assured them everything was good when they agreed to let the buyers rent. RE/MAX, the buyers realtor, said through a spokesperson that realtors don't qualify buyers and it is up to the lender."It's their fault and nobody wants to help us," said Jenny Fisch.The Fischs tried to filed a report with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office but they were told it was a civil matter. They also attempted to contact Child Protective Services because a child was in the home as well as animal control because seven dogs and three cats were found inside.It gets worse. Their insurance won't cover the damage. A spokesperson for Auto-Owners Insurance said they had no comment on the situation.Now the couple is paying a mortgage on a home they can't live in and trying to figure out how to come up with the funds to pay for repairs. The would-be buyers are nowhere to be found and a reporter has not been able to make contact with them."It was insane to me how somebody could live in such a nice home and in a matter of months, destroy everything," said Paul Fisch. 3362
