KENOSHA, Wis. – Kenosha is still reeling from a police shooting that ignited riots, leading to catastrophic property damage. Now, the community is trying to heal and look forward with artists who have come from all over.One block away from where Jacob Blake was shot residents of the Wisconsin city are determined to heal, one brush stroke at a time.“All of the downtown area was boarded up with plywood,” said Francisco Loyola, Director of the Kenosha Creative Space. “And it was protected but it looked like a ghost town.”The Kenosha Creative Space is a nonprofit that connects artists to the community.Loyola put out a call to artists in an effort to begin the process of healing by turning boarded up businesses into works of art.“Right now, we don't know exactly how many boards have been painted,” said Loyola.What they do know is that artists have heeded the call from all over the country and even Canada to support Kenosha.Artist and activist Roberto Marquez traveled up from Dallas. After consulting with the Blake family, he put his brush to work to depict how he sees the event that thrust the city of around 100,000 into the national spotlight.“Some of the people, they might not like it, but that's the reality,” said Marquez. “I mean, I didn't pose a problem. I'm just, you know, painting with my brush.”There are also students trying to make sense of what has happened in their quiet community.“We thought that it would be the best thing to take them out of these cages that we've been calling our homes. And let them exert their energy and their passion their desire,” said Ardis L. Mahone Mosley at the Kenosha Unified School District. “We've been very unified as of recently.”High school junior Aniyah Ervin says in a volatile time of uncertainty, this is one way to come together to mend some of the hurt.“It's been very healing, honestly, because although we know it's not permanent, it's good to show how together we are at the moment,” said Ervin. “You know, it may all burn down again next week. We don't know. But as of now, we're all together, we're all making art. We're all making Kenosha as beautiful as we know it to be.” 2159

JULIAN, Calif., (KGTV)— Firefighters in Julian are hoping to keep San Diego’s last volunteer fire department alive, despite being voted to shut down last week. The Julian Cuyamaca Fire Protection District is now suing the County, alleging the decision to dissolve the department was made in secret meetings. The court hearing for Wednesday was postponed in Downtown San Diego after a judge recused himself from the case.Two weeks ago, Debbie Mushet voted to have the county take over the Julian Cuyamaca Fire Protection District [JCFPD]. “I definitely voted yes for it, and I thought that was the end of it,” Mushet said. In this special election, 56% of Julian residents voted to have the San Diego County Fire overtake the historic volunteer department. “It’s worked as long as I’ve been up here, but it doesn’t work anymore. There’s a time when things just need to change,” Mushet said. “The volunteers have done a great job ion the past, but it’s just the money wasn’t going to be there.”Despite losing the special election and a unanimous vote by the Local Agency Formation Commission to officially dissolve the department, volunteer firemen are not ready to give up. Attorney Cory Briggs, who represents JCFPD said that decision was made through secret meetings. Therefore, the election results and the commission votes are “null and void.” When the County transition team came to the station on Monday, protestors staged a sit-in, refusing the leave the premises. JCFPD said in a statement, the County sent armed Sheriffs Deputies to “intimidate the unarmed JCFPD personnel who were peaceful truing to secure their facilities and equipment while the new lawsuit works its way through the courts.”“CalFire and the Julian Fire Department that exists now, I don’t understand why we can’t coexist,” Debbie Hickey said. “Every time it’s been really good response times. They knew right where to come.”For years, Hickey has relied on the Julian Fire Department for emergency care for her ill husband. She said she trusts the locals more than an outsider who would be assigned to cover the Julian area. “If I was to call 9-1-1, I don’t know who will come, I don’t know what the response time will be, and that’s a very scary situation to be in,” Hickey said. “My husband is staying down in the city during this time because quite frankly, I’m scared to death to let him come home to Julian.”A volunteer fireman told 10News off camera that since Monday they have not been allowed to respond to emergency incidents. In fact, they said their radios were disconnected. In the meantime, all 9-1-1 calls are being handled by Cal-Fire Station 50, down the street from the JCFPD station.While there is no official sit-in happening now, there are still many volunteers at the station. Volunteer crews have barricaded their engines inside the garage with their SUV’s, to try to stop the county from towing their vehicles. Either way, Mushet said this back and forth is getting out of control. “Let the vote speak for itself, let the count come in, volunteers step back, and it’s over and done,” Mushet said. “This is ridiculous. They asked for the vote they got their vote, and they were not happy with the decision, so they’re refusing to give in and it’s just sad. I’ve never seen this town so divided.”Wednesday’s court hearing scheduled for 8:30 a.m. was delayed after the assigned judge recused himself from the case. No reason was given for his recusal. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police shot and killed a man who fired at officers outside a burning Kansas City home early Monday morning. Investigators said they later found a woman dead inside the house, after first discovering a dead woman outside, according to KCPD.A police spokesperson said several people were involved in a shooting around 2 a.m. In an update at 4:45 a.m., police said officers shot and killed an "active shooter" outside the home.“The suspect came out the house, fired shots at the officers who returned fire, stopping the suspect. The house started smoking. The fire department put out the fire and discovered another body,” explained Captain Lionel Colon with KCPD.Police said the house fire appeared to have been set intentionally but did not provide details on whether it was related to the shooting.It was not immediately clear how the victims died or what led up to the shooting. Police did not immediately identify anyone involved in the incident.A woman who identified herself as the aunt of the man police killed told 41 Action News her nephew killed her niece and the mother of his child. Even eight hours after the shooting, crime scene tape covered a block in each direction around an intersection, not far from the Truman Sports Complex. At one point, police had tape tied to Sarah Jones’s home. She said she got home late from work Sunday night and was still awake when gunshots erupted. She called police and a few minutes later heard another round of gunfire. “I got the kids, told them to get to the lowest point of the house. We were trying to get down to the basement just crawling across the floor. It was very scary,” Jones explained. She said police officers escorted her three children around the crime scene tape to the bus stop Monday morning.  1820

(KGTV) -- The Hollywood Casino Jamul-San Diego is undergoing a name and management change. As of Tuesday, the Hollywood sign came down, making room for the casino’s new name, which is simply Jamul Casino.In March, it was announced that the Jamul Indian Village Development Corporation would take over management of the casino. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Authorities in East Tennessee have asked the public to be on the lookout after a tiger was spotted near an industrial park.The Knox County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy spotted the tiger Wednesday night in the Forks of the River Industrial Park.The sheriff’s office says several agencies are looking for the tiger, including the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Knoxville police’s Animal Control Unit and representatives with Tiger Haven, which is located in Kingsport.Investigators say there have been no other sightings.
