SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 52-year-old man was struck and gravely injured Sunday in a San Diego trailer park, and the motorist who hit him in a stolen Hummer was arrested. The incident began just after 11:10 a.m. when the San Diego police received a call from Chula Vista police who were involved in the pursuit of the stolen Hummer, SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said. The Hummer was snatched from a RoadOne impound yard in Chula Vista, SDPD Lt. Bryan Brecht told the media. The vehicle initially crashed at a gas station at 1400 Melrose Ave. in Chula Vista, but continued evading police south on Interstate 5, exiting into a trailer park at 1600 Palm Ave., Brown said.Officers tried to stop the driver but he sped away and hit the pedestrian, Brown said. It appeared the collision was intentional, Brown added. The 44-year-old driver was eventually taken into custody with help from a K-9 dog deployed to stop him, Brown said. The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being taken into custody. His name was not immediately available. The victim suffered severe trauma and was unresponsive when paramedics transported him to a hospital, Brown said.Because of the severity of the pedestrian's injuries, the case was being investigated by the SDPD's homicide unit, she said.Anyone with information on this crash was asked to call the homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1417

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The death toll from the wildfires raging on the West Coast stands at least 33, with authorities saying nearly all of the dozens of people reported missing after a devastating blaze in southern Oregon have been accounted for. The flames have destroyed neighborhoods, leaving a barren, gray landscape in their wake, driven tens of thousands of people from their homes and cast a shroud of smoke over the region. The crisis has come amid the coronavirus outbreak, the economic downturn and nationwide racial unrest that has led to protests in Portland for more than 100 days. 599

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former San Diego State University student accused of setting a string of fires around the campus over the course of three days was charged with a dozen felony counts Wednesday, including burglary, arson and vandalism. Madelyn Delarosa, 19, was taken into custody Saturday morning, following four fires she's suspected of setting to apartments and vehicles across campus between March 13-16. No injuries were reported in connection with the fires, all of which occurred a few blocks south of Viejas Arena. However, Deputy District Attorney Rikole Santin noted that one of the fires was ignited in an occupied apartment, inside which a person was sleeping. Santin said the heat from the flames caused a window to shatter and ``rain glass and fire'' upon the victim, who was asleep just below the window. A suspected motive for the spree was unknown, as was the reason Delarosa was no longer a student at the campus. RELATED: Former SDSU student arrested in connection with a string of fires on campusDelarosa, who pleaded not guilty, faces 13 years in state prison if convicted as charged. The prosecutor said the crime spree began last Wednesday with Delarosa allegedly vandalizing a vehicle parked within an apartment complex garage, causing ``well over ,000 in damage.'' At 11 a.m. Thursday, an officer on patrol spotted and quickly extinguished a fire in a parked car in the 5500 block of Hardy Avenue, according to campus police. Santin said surveillance footage captured the defendant entering a parking garage, where a Toyota Prius was set aflame, then an hour later, she allegedly ignited the exterior door of an unoccupied apartment in the 5600 block of Hardy Avenue, both times by using an unspecified accelerant. A passerby put out the apartment fire before officers arrived, police said. Around 8:30 a.m. Friday, police received word of the apartment blaze near the 5500 block of Montezuma Road, where the sleeping resident was able to escape without injury, according to Santin. That fire went out on its own, police said. Delarosa is also accused with setting a Mercedes-Benz on fire shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday in a parking garage in the 5500 block of Hardy Avenue. Delarosa has no prior criminal history, but had ``numerous prior contacts with law enforcement,'' according to Santin, the nature of which was not disclosed. The defendant is being held in lieu of 0,000 bail and is due back in court March 29 for a readiness conference. 2483

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 41-year-old La Vegas man was killed when he crashed his motorcycle into a concrete guardrail on a freeway connector ramp in La Mesa, authorities said Thursday. The crash happened around 5:55 p.m. Wednesday on the connector ramp from eastbound Interstate 8 to northbound state Route 125, California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Christy said.A man was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he allowed the bike to veer to the right and strike a concrete guardrail, Christy said. The impact ejected the rider off of the motorcycle, over the guardrail and onto the traffic lanes of westbound I-8.The rider, whose name was withheld pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene, the officer said. 735

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Navy dismissed charges Thursday against an officer who had been accused of not reporting war crimes by a Navy SEAL later acquitted of murder in a high-profile case that got the president's attention. The action by the chief of naval operations in the case of Lt. Jacob Portier is the latest blow to military prosecutors and comes a month after a military jury cleared Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher of murder and attempted murder charges.Adm. John Richardson also ordered an investigation into the performance of the Navy's justice system.Portier faced charges of dereliction of duty, destruction of evidence and holding Gallagher's re-enlistment ceremony next to the corpse of a teen Islamic State militant the decorated SEAL was accused of stabbing to death after treating the boy's wounds.Gallagher was convicted of a single charge of posing for photos with the 17-year-old militant's corpse. He was sentenced to the maximum penalty of four months but will serve no jail time because it is less than his pre-trial confinement. The move by the admiral comes a day after President Donald Trump ordered the secretary of the Navy on Wednesday to strip prosecutors of medals they were awarded for their handling of the case despite the fact Gallagher was acquitted on the most serious charges.A prosecutor who had been removed from the case before trial — and not given a medal — was admonished for taking part in an effort that used software to track emails sent to the defense team that a judge said violated Gallagher's constitutional rights. The email tracking was meant to ferret out the source of leaks to the news media that plagued the case but the Navy said it never found the leak. 1726
