BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao expressed his hope for a continuously improving Beijing Film Academy in a handwritten congratulatory letter to the leading Chinese film school, dubbed the "cradle of China's filmmakers", as it celebrated its 60th founding anniversary on Saturday.State Councilor Liu Yandong also sent a congratulatory letter to the school, urging it to significantly improve the artists' originality and the integrity of the school's students. The Beijing Film Academy is the only school on the Chinese mainland that specializes in the study of cinematography. Its long list of prominent graduates includes many of the country's most important directors and popular movie celebrities.Among these directors are Zhang Yimou, winner of the top award at the Venice Film Festival and Chen Kaige, the only Chinese mainland director ever to win the top prize at Festival de Cannes.

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang said here Monday China would continue to crack down on terrorists and criminals targeting civil aviation.Zhang made the remarks when addressing the opening ceremony of an international conference on air law.The conference will review draft amendments to international conventions on aviation security.Zhang said as a responsible country, China firmly supports international efforts to combat terrorism and will continue to meet its international obligations in the field of civil aviation.Zhang said he hoped delegates could discuss ways to improve international air criminal law.He also expressed hope for the criminalization of unlawful interference that threatens aviation security."We need to send a clear message to the international community and to terrorist groups - any unlawful interfering in civil aviation is intolerable," said Roberto Kobeh Gonzalez, president of the Council for the International Civil Aviation Organization, at the conference.According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), during the twelve-day conference, delegates from over 60 countries will examine international law concerning aviation security, including the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Civil Aviation and the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Seizure of Aircraft.

BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- An outraged Chinese public has been flooding the Internet with its intense displeasure and protests over Japan's illegal detention of a Chinese trawler and its crew in the past few days.Japan detained Chinese captain Zhan Qixiong and his fellow crew of 14 members on September 7 after the trawler they were abroad collided with two Japanese coast guard patrol vessels near the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea.The crewmembers and the boat returned to China on September 13, but Japan extended the illegal detention of Zhan by 10 days on Sunday.Since the incident, "Diaoyu Islands" and "Zhan Qixiong" have become the most searched terms in China's Internet community, the world's largest online community with more than four billion Internet users. Also, Internet bulletin boards on several major Chinese news portals have been overwhelmed with tens of thousands of messages saying that the Diaoyu Islands have always been an integral part of China and it's within the rights of Chinese fishermen to fish in the waters around the islands.Above all, these messages call for Japan to immediately and unconditionally release Zhan."The seizure of our trawler and captain causes an enormous damage to the Chinese people. I strongly demand that Japan return the seized trawler and apologize," said a netizen on Sohu.com, who goes by the name of "1996."On Sunday, China's Foreign Ministry said that China's relations with Japan were being severely damaged by Japan's decision to prolong Zhan's detention, warning that China would take "strong counter measures" if Japan did not release him."We demand the Japanese side immediately release the Chinese captain unconditionally," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu."China will take strong counter measures if the Japanese side clings obstinately to its own course and double its mistakes, and Japan shall bear all the consequences," Ma said in a press statement.China has already suspended bilateral exchanges at and above the provincial or ministerial levels, halted contact with Japan on the issues of increasing civil flights and expanding aviation rights between the two countries, and the number of Chinese tourists to Japan has already plunged, according to the ministry.Wang Hanling, a maritime law expert with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told Xinhua, "Japan's forceful so-called law enforcement in the waters off the Diaoyu Islands were in defiance of the principles of international law as well as Chinese law, which showed that Japan allowed no delay in asserting so-called 'sovereignty' in the area.""It also showed that Japanese politicians were short-sighted in considering Sino-Japanese relations," Wang added.Zhou Jincheng, a student from China Youth University for Political Sciences, said that Japan should not cling obstinately to its own course, or it would only arouse more anger from the Chinese people. At Capitan Zhan's coastal hometown of Xiaozha in southeast China's Fujian Province, his family and fellow fishermen are expecting his release.Recalling his six days and five nights under Japanese detention, Kang Chunming, a member of Zhan's crew, told Xinhua he was "very worried about the captain's safety and well-being."Kang said after Japanese authorities seized their boat, while living on the boat they had to sleep sitting up and many of them had become ill because of unclean drinking water.Besides, the Japanese took them off the boat for interrogations on a daily basis and, on some occasions, only sent them back in the small hours.Since Zhan was seized, a lot has changed in his family. His grandmother died from shock upon learning of the detention, his outgoing son, 13, has become exceptionally sensitive and silent, and his wife's call for her husband's release has grown increasingly stronger with the traditional moon festival, a time for family reunion, only two days away."It has been so many days, why don't they release him? How can his grandmother rest in peace?" Zhan's wife, Chen Tingting, told Xinhua in their simple house, which makes the portrait of Zhan's deceased grandmother more prominent.

TIANJIN, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's top climate change official Thursday called for compromise from all parties to seek the biggest common ground during the UN climate talks while developed and developing countries remained divided on many issues.Parties at the talks should rebuild mutual trust and improve sense of responsibility as climate change is a global issue affecting every country, Xie Zhenhua, vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, told the press on the sidelines of a new round of UN climate talks held in Tianjin from Oct. 4 to 9."The best result of the global climate talks may be a solution that dissatisfies every one but is accepted by all," he said. "To reach the result, every party needs compromise and work to find the biggest common ground. If one country refuses to do anything and ask others to do many, this is definitely not acceptable."When asked about one of the most controversial issue on how to manage the fast start fund, Xie said, as a developing country, China is fully qualified to receive funds and technical supports from developed countries."But, provided that the amount of current fast start fund is much less than what developing countries need, China would not compete with those who need the money most such as the least developing countries and island countries," he said.Jonathan Pershing, who leads the U.S. negotiators at the Tianjin meeting, said on Thursday that there should be a differentiation between offering finance for developing countries as some countries clearly have enormous capabilities, even though they are listed in the developing country list, while some countries, although in the developing country list, have virtually no capabilities.Countries like China can do a great deal, and have made very clear that they intend to do a great deal, he told reporters."It (China) has made commitment that was made on a series of actions on intensity, on renewable energy and on forests that are examples of what a really powerful country with enormous commitment can deliver," he said.Xie Zhenhua said China will also provide as much assistance to these countries as it is able to, through South-South cooperation."We are not only saying it but have also begun doing it. In the past few years, we have provided training programs to people from least developed countries and worked with them in programs to cope with climate changes," Xie said. However, Xie strongly argued that developed countries should actually add new money in the fast start fund as a majority of current identified fast start fund was in fact included in the existing Official Development Assistance (ODA).

ATHENS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday pledged to support a stable euro and strengthen cooperation with the European Union (EU)."China will not reduce its euro-bond holdings and China supports a stable euro," Wen said during a speech at the Greek parliament.China and the EU have signed a string of important trade investment contracts to help Europe overcome its financial difficulties, said Wen who arrived in Athens on Saturday on a three-day official visit.Since the outbreak of the global financial crisis, Chinese leaders have visited Europe several times and had frequent meetings with EU leaders, noted the Chinese premier. That, he said, shows Beijing attaches great importance to China-EU relations and "wants to join you in a concerted effort to tide over difficulties."After some European countries suffered sovereign debt crisis earlier this year, Wen said, his government announced many times that Beijing firmly supports the measures adopted by the EU and the International Monetary Fund."China is sincere in enhancing cooperation with Europe and we are confident about the prospects of our cooperation," Wen said. Thanks to joint efforts, China-EU trade has already exceeded the pre-crisis level, he said."China is committed to advancing China-EU relations. This is not an expediency, but a long-term strategic policy," Wen said.
