BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Foreign direct investment (FDI) into China hit a record 105.74 billion U.S. dollars last year, up 17.4 percent year on year, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) announced Tuesday.In December alone, China attracted 14.03 billion U.S. dollars of FDI, up 15.6 percent year on year, making it the 17th consecutive month of FDI growth since August 2009.The rapid FDI growth could be attributed to robust development in the service sector and the country's central and western regions, said MOC spokesman Yao Jian.FDI in the service sector rose 28.6 percent last year and that in central and western regions climbed 27.6 percent year on year, Yao said.

BEIJING, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has called for strengthening efforts in ecological and environmental protection as the country strives for economic restructuring and improving people's livelihoods.Li made the remarks Monday at a meeting on the application of research results on China's environment. According to Minister of Environmental Protection Zhou Shengxian, during another meeting on Tuesday, the sulfur dioxide index is expected to drop 14 percent in 2010 compared with the 2005 level.Also, the index of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), a measure of water pollution, is expected to decrease 12 percent.China's 11th five-year program set out to reduce COD and sulfur dioxide levels by 10 percent over this period.However, Li stressed that China faced more pressure in environmental protection than any country in the world, since it was a developing nation striving for modernization and with a huge population of 1.3 billion.China should innovate its development mode and endeavor to make the two, development and environmental protection, promote each other, he noted.Li said the country should set up a people-oriented conception in environmental protection efforts, and carry out major projects regarding sewage disposal, waste processing and water environment in urban areas.Efforts would also be devoted to prevent and treat rural area's pollution problems and ensure the safety of drinking water and food, Li said.Li called for improving related laws and regulations and fully completing the government's responsibility in the environmental protection sector.

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday will begin its annual Spring Festival travel rush, with an expected 2.56 billion passenger trips in the coming 40 days.Airlines and trains have been added to cope with the passenger surge, which is 11.6 percent up year on year, according to the Ministry of Transport.The airport in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, announced Tuesday it would add another 252 flights for the travel peak period.The capacity of airlines in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region will be raised 30 percent.In southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, a major hometown to migrant workers, 12 flights with 5,100 seats will be added between Chongqing and Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province.Except for the temporary trains, more high-speed trains have been put into operation for the Spring Festival.The high-speed train will be increased to 88 pairs this year, 55 more than last year's 33 pairs in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province, which largely eased the difficulties of buying tickets for passengers.Snow and sleet has struck five provincial level regions, including Hunan, Guangxi, Chongqing, Guizhou and Yunnan since Monday, disrupting transportation networks.The Ministry of Public Security Tuesday ordered police in the five hard-hit areas to go all out to keep traffic flowing and make sure no expressways were shut down due to slippery roads.Police in the five localities were ordered to clean snow and ice on the roads and store emergency response materials, such as snow blowers, and maintain control of the flow of vehicles heading to the hardest-hit Guizhou province."Snow and ice will bring great difficulties to transportation," said Weng Mengyong, vice minister of the Ministry of Transport (MOT).Five aspects of work, including anti-ice preparation, information release, monitoring network, emergency reaction and cooperation with public security bureaus, had been arranged ahead of the travel peak, Weng said.In early 2008, freezing weather across southern China caused power cuts and transportation chaos, preventing many residents from going home for family reunions during China's lunar new year.Other new services are also being supplied as the pressure of transportation is increasing this year.The Wuhan Railway Administration started ticket delivery services for migrant workers this year and about 3 million tickets will be delivered.In south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Nanjing Railway Administration opened micro-blogs on Sina.com and QQ.com to offer railway transportation information.In the next 40 days, not only passengers, but also railway crews, will face great challenges."Patrolling is like a sauna to me," said railway police Zhao Hongye in Lanzhou, capital of northwest China's Gansu Province."It is too crowded. SEOUL, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- China and South Korea can borrow judicial experiences from each other, Chinese Chief Justice Wang Shengjun said here Friday.There is significant room for cooperation between the judicial courts of the two countries, especially in such areas as administrative management, information technology applications, and training of judges, said Wang, president of China's Supreme People's Court (SPC).Wang praised the information technology applications at the grassroots judicial courts in South Korea.He said that his visit to South Korea was fruitful and hoped that the two sides would expand exchanges and cooperation further and make contribution to the development of the relationship between the two countries.Wang arrived here Sunday to visit at the invitation of the Supreme Court of South Korea.During the visit, Wang held talks with various South Korean judicial officials and discussed topics of common concern, such as judicial systems and reforms.
