ISTANBUL, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, who attends a regional summit on Afghanistan here as the special representative of Chinese President Hu Jintao, pledged that China, as a neighbor that shares friendship dated back to antiquity, will continue to support Afghanistan's reconstruction."China has actively supported, promoted and participated in Afghanistan's post-war peace and reconstruction effort. Look ahead, China will continue to give support to Afghanistan within its capacity," Yang said in his remarks at the Istanbul Summit on Friendship and Cooperation in the Heart of Asia.Yang noted that since 2002, China has cancelled all mature debts owed by the Afghan government and provided a total of more than 900 million yuan (about 132 million U.S. dollars) grant assistance.He said China has launched a large number of assistance programs in Afghanistan to help improve people's lives, including a series of big projects such as the Jomhuri Hospital (Republican Hospital) and the Parwan irrigation project, which have made a positive impact in the country's reconstruction process.China has also trained more than 500 Afghan government officials in a broad range of areas, including diplomacy, economy and trade, medical and health care, finance, tourism, agriculture and counternarcotics, according to Yang.China announced last year it will turn all its previously committed 75-million-U.S. dollar concessional loans into grant assistance, to be provided to Afghanistan over a five-year period.Yang said the first tranche of funds was already delivered in 2009, and the remaining 60 million U.S. dollars will be made available in the coming four years."In addition, we will keep on assisting Afghanistan in such areas as vocational training and human resources development," Yang added.Hosted by Turkey, the Istanbul summit was also attended by Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Iranian First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi and Tajikistan Foreign Minister Hamrohon Zarifi.Yang said China highly appreciates Turkey's efforts in addressing the issue of Afghanistan and supports the tripartite cooperation among Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan.He praised the progress Afghanistan has made in its reconstruction."Over the past eight years, we have seen how the Afghan people have risen to challenge and worked unyieldingly to rebuild their country. Afghanistan has gradually recovered from the traumas of war and scored commendable achievements in institution building, economic development and external relations," Yang said.He hailed that the successful presidential election held by the Afghan people in 2009 was of special significance, as it marked an important step forward towards the goal of "Afghanistan run by the Afghans."However, Yang pointed out that Afghanistan still faces many daunting challenges, as the security situation remains volatile, the process of economic reconstruction is slow and people's livelihood needs urgent improvement."Afghanistan is at a critical juncture," said Yang, calling on countries in the region and the international community to step up efforts to support Afghanistan. BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Wednesday said China and the United States should respect each other's core interests and properly handle sensitive affairs in a bid to preserve the sound development of bilateral ties.     China and the United States should handle bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term point of view, said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), in a meeting with a U.S. senate delegation.     Wu hailed the sound development of China-U.S. relations in 2009,saying it indicated a smooth transition from the Bush administration to the Obama's and the relationship between the countries was progressing well.     He labeled the China-U.S. relationship as "one of the world's most important" during the half-hour meeting in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     Wu pledged to further the exchanges between the two country's parliaments in a bid to promote strategic mutual trust, mutually beneficial cooperation and friendship between the two peoples.     The delegation, headed by Senator Patty Murray, was in Beijing for a meeting under a regular exchange mechanism between the two parliaments, in which the two sides discussed such topics as bilateral ties, parliamentary exchanges and climate change.     The U.S. senators highlighted the importance of relations with China, promised to enhance communication and dialogue with the NPC so as to promote mutual understanding.

CHICAGO, March 17 (Xinhua) -- A stronger RMB would not be a tonic for the U.S. economy or manufacturing and it would be a huge mistake to raise tariffs on imports from China to force a change in the yuan, says a U.S. trade expert on Tuesday.Daniel Griswold is director of the Center for Trade Policy Studies at the Cato Institute, a non-profit public policy research foundation headquartered in Washington, D.C. He is also the author of a new book, Mad about Trade: Why Main Street America Should Embrace Globalization.The trade expert told Xinhua during an exclusive interview, " China has been moving in the right direction since 2005 by allowing the currency to appreciate. Threats from the U.S. government actually make it more difficult for the Chinese government to resume appreciation because it would look as though Beijing was giving in to foreign pressure."Griswold pointed out that a stronger yuan would not be a tonic for the U.S. economy or manufacturing. "China would remain competitive in a broad range of manufactured products even if the yuan were 25 percent higher. The dollar depreciated sharply against the currencies of Canada and the Eruozone after 2002, yet our bilateral deficit with both those regions continued to grow," he added.New York Times' Nobel laureate economist, Paul Krugman, recommended in his latest column that the U.S. impose a 25 percent tariff on Chinese imports unless China appreciates its currency Renminbi. Griswold considers it a huge mistake to raise tariffs on imports from China to force a change in the yuan.Regarding President Barack Obama's new export push to double the U.S. export in the next five years, Griswold believes this goal will raise false expectations.He noted: "The goal will be difficult to realize. It hasn't been done since the 1970s, and that was driven in large part by inflation. It also depends on robust growth abroad, which is beyond the control of even this president. Faster export growth would be good for the U.S. economy, but it will not put much of a dent in high unemployment."When asked what the U.S. government should do to increase its export, the trade expert advised, "the single best policy to promote exports would be for the U.S. government to set a good example by resisting protectionism in our own market."He further explained, "U.S. companies are currently facing sanctions from Mexico, Brazil and other countries because we have failed to live up to our commitments in the WTO and the North American Free Trade Agreement. We are losing export opportunities abroad because Congress has failed to enact trade agreements with South Korea and Colombia, and the administration has failed to exercise leadership in WTO negotiations."In January the U.S. government data showed that the gap between what Americans sell abroad and what they import narrowed unexpectedly. While the usual crowd hailed it as an "improvement," Griswold believes that the numbers point to the slow growth of demand at home and abroad.He said: "We shouldn't read too much into the monthly trade numbers. The smaller-than-expected trade deficit in January could be a warning sign that the economic recovery remains sluggish. Exports were down, and imports down even further."When commenting on the U.S.-China trade relations, Griswold said, "U.S.-China relations remain fundamentally sound. Our commercial relationship is mutually beneficial and among the most important in the world."He further remarked, "American families benefit from affordable consumer products from China, while U.S. companies benefit from exports to China. And all Americans benefit from lower interest rates from Chinese investment in U.S. Treasury bonds." HELSINKI, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- It was the afternoon of Feb. 12 local time in the Confucius Institute classroom at the downtown University of Helsinki. Lanterns and colorful streamers were hanging high, creating a joyful festival atmosphere.The Spring Festival, once celebrated only in China, in recent times has been gaining greater attention worldwide.And in that small classroom, aspirations of learning more about the traditional Chinese festival drew dozens of excited and attentive students from Finland and other countries.The gathering started with vice director Professor Li Yuanzheng's introduction to the origin and customs of the Chinese Lunar New Year. Then, a short video clip on the festival was played.However, the audience's participation wasn't limited just to listening and watching. To celebrate the "Year of the Tiger," they staged a string of performances to share their happiness.The performances were quite Chinese and included small dramas, Chinese folk songs, poems from the Tang and Song dynasties, and Taichi.Apparently, their love of the traditional Chinese culture simmered into the music and poetry. Additionally, the students also brilliantly displayed their achievements in learning the Chinese language.Perhaps the most symbolic icon of the Spring festival is the dumpling, which would certainly feed the hunger of the students at the Confucius Institute for both food and knowledge.Juhani Riisio, a student at the University of Helsinki, called the dumplings "quite good to taste."The students knew that dumplings are always served during the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays, but making the food was a new challenge for them.The first time doing anything is never easy. However, it could be read from the students' actions and faces that they were doing their best.It seemed that they were making the dumplings as carefully and confidently as they were at learning Chinese.Hard work and eagerness to learn usually pays off. The students were soon able to made decent looking dumplings, though the taste was still waiting to be examined.As the experimental dumplings were cooked and served, delicious smells seemed to stuff the room. Anyone who wanted to know the results of the students' efforts could see nothing but gladness and comfort from the smiles of both teachers and students.The making of a dumpling may take only a couple of hours to learn but a culture could take a lifetime to appreciate. Small and symbolic as the little dumplings are, they help to shorten the distance between the western world and China, facilitating communications amongst different peoples. By learning from each other, it is certain that our tomorrows would be defined by mutual understandings instead of mistrust.
