KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City, Missouri Health Department is speaking out after it poured bleach on food intended to be given to homeless people.Nellie McCool, who helps run Free Hot Soup Kansas City, has been helping the homeless for years until Sunday."Officers and health inspectors demanded we destroy our food and we were violating health code violations by sharing meals with our friends," said McCool.The department said the group wasn't following the law about serving the homeless."They were notified back in a meeting in September that they needed to get a permit and they just outright said they refused to do that," said Dr. Rex Archer, director of health for KCMO.But McCool said she never heard from the department."That is incorrect," McCool said. "We never had any kind of government official ever come and speak with anybody at any of the public parks."According to the health department, the permit is free and all organizations that want to serve food to homeless people (or anyone) needs this permit. Archer said the food was also not being handled correctly and could put others at risk."Preparing food in all these individuals homes when people haven't been trained, prepare food safely. Then, they are taking it and transporting it in trunks of cars when its cool. It's supposed to be warm food but they have no insulation or a way to keep the food warm," Archer said. 1424

Laguna and temperatures below freezing Tuesday.Tom is a co-owner of Laguna Mountain Lodge co-owner.  He told 10News, "Well, it got really cold, dropped down to about 22 and wind was just howlin' and then I got up about 5 this morning and the wind had died and there was a coating of snow; beautiful."It hasn't been exceptionally busy at the lodge; it usually takes a heavier snowfall to bring the crowds.It's also dangerous, he told us."It was pretty icy this morning; the roads were real bad." LA JOLLA, Calif (KGTV) - A La Jolla man is turning recycled plastic into stuffed animals to help teach kids the importance of protecting the ocean.Malte Niebelschuetz created the "Shore Buddies" in 2014. He started with four animals: Steven Seagull, Sammy the Seal, Emma the Whale and Fin the Dolphin. Now, he's running a Kickstarter campaign to help create a new doll, Shelly the Sea Turtle. He's also hoping to publish a children's book that he wrote starring the animals."The kids, they are our future," he says. "They will shape this planet into a plastic-free society."The stuffed animals are made out of recycled plastic. Each animal uses six plastic bottles. Niebelschuetz says the plastic is broken down into a fiber, which is then turned into yarn."In just four years, we've kept more than 100,000 plastic bottles out of the ocean and turned them into fluffy, cute Shore Buddies," he says.Neibelschuetz is taking the dolls and book to schools across San Diego. He reads to the classes and teaches the kids how to keep plastic out of the ocean.Recently, he read at La Jolla's Gillispie School. The school has a "Big Project" going on that gets kids from Kindergarten to 6th grade engaged in issues that affect the community. One of them is human effects on the coastline."I truly believe in being the change you want to see in the world," says Niebelschuetz.
