While he's thousands of miles away, the pandemic has made things even more complicated.28-year-old Anthony Galvan- Schaible packed his bags for Bali in February with the intent to stay until April. In March, the pandemic hit, forcing him to stay in Paradise a little longer."It was one of those things to sit it out and wait was the better idea," says Galvan- Schaible.He says one night he hopped on his motorcycle, and that's when things took an unexpected turn."The bike went to the street. I went to the left and ended up in a little ditch head first."He was rushed to the hospital after hitting his head on a concrete pillar. The impact compressed his spine. Within hours he was taken to emergency surgery. Galvan- Schaible now has multiple screws and plates along his back."It's terrifying… when they're across the planet and get hurt," says Mom, Jamie Schaible. "All you can think of is how can they get the care that they would get here."Because of travel restrictions, mom says it was stressful not knowing how she would get to her son."We reached out to the Indonesian embassy and just pleaded from a mother's heart and leaned on their compassion," says Schaible. "They bent over backwards to get me my visas."This allowed her to get to her son's bedside.Galvan-Schaible says he is starting to regain feeling in his hand. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While the San Diego Padres lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday night in Game 1 of the National League Division Series, fans were thankful to be able to participate in the action alongside other San Diegans.While much of the Friar Faithful couldn’t make it to Texas to cheer on the Padres, the playoff excitement was still felt downtown, and for some, that was enough.“Unfortunately, you can’t watch it live, but to be surrounded with a group of people that are all watching it and all really excited, it’s pretty magical,” said Andrea Durkee, a resident of downtown and Padres fan. “I think we all needed something just happy and exciting and to look forward to, and this is absolutely the best thing we could have downtown.”Some fans watched the first game in the best-of-five series from Petco Park’s Tailgate Lot, which was transformed into a drive-in style viewing party.“I have season tickets actually, and we weren’t able to go this year, which is a huge bummer, but we’ve made the best out of it,” said Catie Vance. “We’re excited that we got to do this, at least.”Spectators on the other side were just as excited.“Grew up in LA, my grandfather had season tickets, I’ve probably seen 100 Dodger games at Dodger stadium I haven’t seen them win the world series yet, I’d love to see that, but I guess if someone has to go and the Padres do go, there’s worse things that can happen in life,” said Michael Martin, a Dodger’s fan.Facial coverings were required for all fans outside of their vehicles, and vehicles were spaced 20 feet apart to encourage social distancing. 1606

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – While 28,000 doses of the vaccine might sound like a lot, the county says it still won’t be enough to cover health care workers at the top of the list to get it.It’s a start, but immunologist Dr. Robert Schooley says we still have a long way to go.“It’s going to take a while but at least now we understand what the endpoint will be,” said Schooley.RELATED: How a COVID-19 vaccine will be distributed to San Diego's medical workersAccording to San Diego County, the initial shipment of 28,000 vaccines will only cover 72% of the top-tier health are workers who need it. That’s not enough for long-term care residents and staff who are also in the phase 1A top-tier to receive it.The shipment will only cover the first of two doses necessary for the Pfizer vaccine. The second doses will come in subsequent shipments.While there won’t be enough doses for all the front-line workers at UCSD, it is giving them hope.“The good news is we’ll be getting quite a few doses of the vaccine," Schooley says. “We’ll be getting farther down the list than we thought we were going to get.”The next hurdle for the vaccine is gaining widespread public trust.“These vaccines have been in tens-of-thousands of people and the FDA has gone over the data extremely carefully,” said Schooley. “I certainly would have no qualms myself about getting vaccinated this afternoon.”Schooley says about 70% of the population would need to get vaccinated to reach herd immunity.
