CLEVELAND — As we’ve seen throughout this pandemic, people on both sides of the mask debate are passionate about where they stand.“It’s very sad that this has become a political issue,” said Sharona Hoffman, a professor of Law and Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University.On Wednesday night, an order from Governor Mike DeWine will take effect, requiring masks in public settings in parts of Ohio, including Ohio's three largest cities of Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati. Ohio, unlike a number of other states, does not have a statewide mandate on wearing masks. The move sparked increased chatter around the claim that these mandates infringe on the rights of Americans.“This shouldn’t be about people’s liberties,” said Hoffman.Government mandates are nothing new.“We have to pay taxes, we have to abide by the speed limit,” said Hoffman.During this pandemic, regulations requiring masks are no different and totally appropriate, according to Hoffman.“This type of regulation is legal, constitutional and very, very sensible,” said Hoffman.One of the main responsibilities of elected officials is to ensure the health and safety of those they serve.“It wouldn’t make sense to even have a government if their hands were tied and they couldn’t take these measures,” said Hoffman.Hoffman said people should be willing to mask-up on their own and not be told to do so.“This should be something that people are very willing to do not only to protect themselves but also to protect other people,” said Hoffman. Cyberbullying among kids related to the election is a growing problem right now. And with how divisive things are, there are concerns this won't be going away after the polls close next week.“This is a very, very polarizing and almost even more in front of kids’ faces, election than any other time in history,” said Titania Jordan with Bark Technologies.Bark Technologies currently monitors more than 5 million kids online at home. Its monitoring shows from mid-August to the end of September, there was a 25% increase in bullying overall from the beginning of July. And there was a 220% increase in severe bullying.You'd expect to see this with the start of the school year, but the numbers show this is about a 50% increase from what Bark typically sees over this period.They say the feedback they've received from parents supports the increase with a direct tie-in to election-related cyberbullying.“It’s not something that she gets to judge over or bully over or make people feel bad about,” said Kathryn Noble, whose daughter was impacted by cyberbullying. “That's not acceptable at any age but especially at 13.”Noble says her 13-year-old daughter recently blocked one of her friends on social media over them supporting a different candidate than her.Bark found around 45% of what kids are sharing is memes about the two candidates. They've found this month that messages including the word “Trump” are being flagged more frequently for depression, hate speech and weapons.Messages including the word "Biden" are being flagged more frequently for cyberbullying, because they include disparaging or belittling language.“They're being bullied even because of maybe something their parents have said or something their family says,” said Matt McKee at Bark Technologies. “Hey, this is where we stand right now and because of that, kids are being brought into those situations.”As far as addressing this cyberbullying, the tech experts we talked with say asking your kids to teach you about a certain app they are using will give you more insight into what's happening earlier.Things to watch for include changes in sleep patterns or behavior. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) — Coronado officials say lifeguards received multiple reports of shark sightings this week, prompting warning signs to be posted for visitors.The city said four shark sightings were reported between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, and the sharks ranged in size from 6 to 10 feet long. One of the sharks was seen by a lifeguard who was on a personal watercraft.The sharks were reportedly within 40 yards of the South Beach area shoreline.The city has posted signs warning beachgoers who visit the area.Naval Base Coronado also posted on Facebook on Friday that shark activity was reported in the Breakers Beach area, and closed water activities until further notice.Just one month ago, a 12-foot great white shark was seen off Coronado's North Beach area by a lifeguard paddleboarding about 100 yards from shore, prompting a 24-hour warning to beachgoers but no water closures. 910
