BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Food poisoning in China killed 56 and sickened 2,452 others between January and May this year, the Ministry of Health said here Wednesday.In a report posted on its website, the ministry said 27 people, about half of the deaths, were killed by food poisoning at home.The deaths were mainly caused by the consumption of poisonous vegetables and pesticide- or poison-contaminated food.There were 68 cases of food poisoning at employee and student cafeterias nationwide in the five months resulting in the poisoning of almost 1,650 people and the deaths of 18. Bacteria-induced food poisoning and improperly cooked kidney beans were the main causes.Seven people were killed by excessive intakes of nitrite, a substance with an appearance similar to salt which can be used as a meat preservatives.The report urged food manufacturers to ensure food safety in accordance with law and called on the public to raise food safety self-awareness levels.

XIAMEN, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Top political advisor Jia Qinglin has urged China's southeastern Fujian Province, which faces Taiwan, to contribute more in promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations."The relations between the mainland and Taiwan are currently at a crucial stage with many opportunities. BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese senior legislator Chen Zhili on Thursday called for preferential policies in taxation for enterprises using cleaner production methods to promote their competitiveness.Chen, vice chairwoman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, made the remarks during her report on an inspection on the enforcement of the Cleaner Production Promotion Law.Favorable policies and funding provided in the law had been poorly implemented, and that had impaired the enterprises' initiative in achieving cleaner production, Chen said.Chen said statistics gathered during the inspection did not provide reasons to be optimistic. During the period from 2003 to 2009, only 0.15 percent of the enterprises nationwide had integrated the cleaner production review into their operations.Chen also noted the serious situation of excessive packaging used in protecting products.Statistics revealed that China had been consuming 40 million tonnes of wrapping materials annually, and the bulk of this was used for extravagant packaging, Chen said.Future policies should make detailed provisions on requirements of enterprises eligible for such tax preferences, and those enterprises, which had made outstanding efforts in cleaner production, should be rewarded, Chen said.Chen also urged streamlining the task assignments among different governmental departments in law enforcement and promote the government's supervisory responsibilities.

CHENGDU, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The massive mudslide that hit Wenchuan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, Saturday had killed 15 people and injured nine others by Monday, local authorities said Tuesday.Wenchuan County was the epicenter of the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that jolted Sichuan and other neighboring provinces in west China in May 2008. The quake left some 87,000 people dead or missing.The county, which falls under the jurisdiction of Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba, was ravaged by rain-triggered floods and mudslides Saturday.At least 31 people were reported missing following the mudslide, but whether the 15 deaths were included was not known, according to a statement issued by the county government of Wenchuan.More than 50,000 residents and tourists were forced to evacuate in Aba as the local meteorological station issued warnings beginning Friday about expected heavy rains and possible geological disasters.Also, the county government of Wenchuan has arranged temporary shelters for residents left homeless by the floods.In Yingxiu Township of Wenchuan, rows of newly completed homes were submerged by the overflowed Minjiang River which runs through the town. The new homes had been built to accommodate those residents relocated outside Yingxiu after the deadly earthquake.If the flooding had not occurred, Lian Qunhua, who opened a grocery in the town, would have received the key for her new home in two weeks."This used to be my home," Lian told a Xinhua reporter, pointing to some debris in front of her. "That is my new home," she said, indicating a row of fresh new buildings soaked in the flood waters on the opposite bank of the Minjiang River."I feel hurt, indeed," she lamented.

JINAN, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- China concludes a five-day air defense exercise on Saturday with a live-fire drill and precision attacks on air targets by ground-to-air missiles.The live-fire drill, in Shandong Province, was part of the exercise code-named "Vanguard-2010," which began Tuesday in seven cities across Henan and Shandong provinces, involving more than 12,000 personnel.Seven types of ground-to-air weaponry, including a new type of ground-to-air missile and another state-of-the-art anti-aircraft gun, were used in intercepting and concentrating fire on air targets.Nearly 200 military aircraft, including drones, reconnaissance aircraft, fighter jets and helicopters, were involved in the five-day military drill, said Feng Zhaoju, deputy commander of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Jinan Military Command.The annual drill, consisting of two phases, focused on an emergency evacuation, strategy, reconnaissance, early warning, ground-to-air attacks and evacuation of command posts during the first phase which ended Thursday.Its second phase included testing of air defense abilities in a "complicated electromagnetic environment."A "Vanguard-2009A" exercise last year involved 5,000 troops from the army and air force."Vanguard-2008" included a 2,200-strong armored brigade from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Jinan Military Area Command.
