SINGAPORE, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and other leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies met Saturday to explore ways of countering the international financial crisis and reviving the world economy.     During the two-day meeting, the APEC leaders were to focus on the financial crisis, climate change, protectionism, supporting a multilateral trading platform, and advancing regional economic integration. Such moves are of vital importance to all members, particularly the developing members, in countering the financial crisis, and conform to the common interests of all relevant parties, Hu said.     "We must be committed to our promises, strongly oppose trade protectionism in all its manifestations, be vigilant against and correct the 'invisible' protectionism acts in various forms, reduce and eliminate trade barriers, and solve trade disputes through dialogue and coordination, thus creating favorable conditions of the full recovery and long-term development of world economy," Hu said.     The Chinese president said China strongly supports trade and investment liberalization and facilitation and is committed to establishing a fair, open, equitable and non-discriminatory multilateral trading mechanism.     "China is ready to work with other members to play a constructive role and advance the Doha Round negotiations, on the basis of locking in the existing achievements and respecting the Doha mandate," he said.     "We are ready to speed up the settlement of the remaining issues and work for early comprehensive and balanced outcomes in the negotiations at an early date in order to achieve the goals of the development round," Hu said.     The Chinese president also made a three-point proposal to APEC for improving its cooperation efficiency:     -- To continue to promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, focusing on its own characteristics:     "Through meeting the Bogor Goals on schedule next year by the APEC developed members, the APEC will demonstrate its determination to advance trade and investment liberalization, and oppose trade protectionism," Hu said.     Such a move is of great significance to increasing confidence, expanding regional trade and pushing forward regional economic integration, Hu added.     China supports APEC in "meeting the Bogor Goals on schedule by its developed members" as its priority working agenda, and to advance it steadily, Hu said.     -- To increase input and advance economic and technological cooperation for more fruitful results:     Hu announced that China will allocate 10 million U.S. dollars to establish an APEC cooperation fund in China, to encourage and support relevant agencies and enterprises to participate in APEC economic and technological cooperation.     -- To reform and make innovations to inject new vitality to the APEC mechanism:     APEC should adapt itself to new situations, meet the challenges, and steadily advance its reform and structural construction, the Chinese president said.     Following the first-day session of the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting, the Chinese president, together with other leaders of the APEC member economies, met with representatives of the APEC Business Advisory Council.     They exchanged views on opposing protectionism, promoting investment facilitation, climate change negotiations and advancing regional economic integration.     The two-day Economic Leaders Meeting is the culmination of this year's annual APEC meetings, which also include the ministerial meeting, senior officials' meeting and a business summit.     According to Chinese officials accompanying Hu, the Chinese president was to elaborate on China's stance on the battle against the financial crisis and the global economic recovery, China's position on the challenges posed by climate change, food and energy security, and China's views on APEC's future development.     Since APEC's inception in 1989, APEC's total trade has grown 395 percent, significantly outpacing the rest of the world. During the same period, the GDP (in purchasing power parity terms) in the APEC region has tripled, while the GDP in the rest of the world has only less than doubled.     APEC's 21 member economies are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, China's Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.

ABU DHABI, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- More than 40 world leading renewable energy companies from China have confirmed their participation in the upcoming World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi, organizers said Sunday.     The Chinese pavilion at the meeting, which is now in its third year and will be held in the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Jan. 18-21, has already grown to more than 1,000 square meters, ASDA'A Burson-Marsteller, a public relations consultancy, said in a press release.     Leading companies and organizations from all across China, including Suntech Power, Yingli Green Energy Holding and China Sunergy, are expected to participate in the summit, the press release said.     It noted that there is a particularly strong presence of companies from China's eastern province of Jiangsu, where solar power is a pillar of the local economy, saying approximately half of the Chinese firms participating are from the province.     According to the press release, Shi Zhengrong, Suntech's chairman and CEO, will take part in a discussion on International Policy and Climate Change Action Plans during the summit.     Suntech, a NYSE-listed company with a market capitalization of nearly 3 billion U.S. dollars, is the world's largest producer of crystalline silicon solar panels and has delivered solar energy products to more than 80 countries over the past eight years, it said.     The China Greentech Report, recently issued by the China Greentech Initiative, a partnership of more than 80 of the world's leading companies and organizations, projects that the Chinese government's investment in its "greentech" industry will drive private sector investment, which could create a national market worth up to 1 trillion dollars annually.     Such significant investment and government commitment have led to China playing a significant role in the exhibition at the WFES this year, the press release said.     The WFES, a global platform for sustainable future energy solutions launched in 2008, gathers industrial leaders, investors, scientists, specialists, policymakers and researchers to discuss challenges of rising energy demand and actions to achieve a cleaner and more sustainable future for the world.     Abu Dhabi, an emerging global hub for renewable energy, is the venue for the annual meeting, held along with the World Future Energy and Environment exhibitions.     In June last year, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) decided to base its headquarters in the UAE capital. 

MACAO, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Sunday that the cause of "one country, two systems" is an important part of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, stressing that "the great motherland is always a strong back-up force for the prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao."     Hu, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks when delivering an important speech at the celebration gathering marking the 10th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland.     The advance of the great cause of "one country, two systems" calls for the joint efforts of the central government, the governments of the Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR as well as people of all circles, the president noted.     The central government will remain firmly committed to the principles of "one country, two systems", "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong", "Macao people governing Macao" with a high degree of autonomy.     The central government will continue to act in strict accordance with the basic laws of the Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR and give full support to the chief executives and governments of the Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR in their governance according to law, he said.     The president pledged that all policies adopted by the central government on BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, held talks here Wednesday afternoon with Kim Hyong-o, speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (ROK).     Wu spoke highly of Sino-ROK relations and the positive role that the two legislatures have played in enhancing bilateral relations.     China attaches importance to its relationship with the ROK and both countries are of great influence in the region, he said, noting that development of the bilateral relations accord with the fundamental interests of the two peoples and is conducive to the regional peace, stability and development. BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) Wednesday voiced strong opposition against the United States' imposition of anti-subsidy tariffs on Chinese oil well pipes, saying the move was "discriminatory."     The United States made a decision Tuesday to impose duties ranging from 10.36 percent to 15.78 percent on Chinese oil well pipes for alleged unfair subsidies.     "China is strongly opposed to the U.S. move of continuing with its discriminatory measures and arbitrarily raising the anti-subsidy duty rates," said Yao Jian, spokesman of the MOC.     Yao reiterated that the United States should live up to its promise made at the G20 Summit and the consensus reached earlier by leaders of the two countries to fight trade protectionism.     Earlier this month, the U.S. Commerce Department also slapped preliminary anti-dumping tariffs on the pipe up to 99 percent based on the allegation that "Chinese producers/exporters have sold OCTG (oil country tubular goods) in the United States at prices ranging from zero to 99.14 percent less than normal value."     Customs data showed that pipes involved were worth 3.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, taking up 46 percent of the total amount of Chinese steel products exported to the United States (6.9 billion dollars).     More than 90 companies were affected, including major steel companies like Baosteel, Tianjin Pipe and Ansteel.
