SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - North Park’s Chicken Pie Shop is celebrating 80 years in business Friday and Saturday with deals for customers.The restaurant was originally located on 5th Avenue downtown. Then-owner George Whitehead moved his business to Hillcrest. The storefront at 5th and Robinson now houses a Starbucks.Eventually, Whitehead’s longtime employee John Townsend bought the business and moved it to El Cajon Blvd. at Oregon St. Townsend handed it down to his two sons.“Our father worked so hard for so many years. It’s a grind; you gotta be up for the task each and every day.”Bob Townsend is proud of the Chicken Pie Shop's history. He estimates the number of chicken pies sold at more than 30 million.“People just keep coming,” said Townsend. “They respect good old-school cooking.”Townsend described customers who travel to San Diego and head straight to North Park from the airport. Others buy coolers to bring home some of the restaurant’s frozen creations. Some devoted patrons included boxer Archie Moore and Mesa College coach Bill Sandback, both of whom Townsend served regularly until they passed.It’s not just the customers who stick around. The restaurant's dessert baker has been working for Chicken Pie Shop for 55 years and is now in his 80s.“If I made him retire, he’d probably die,” Townsend said.While Townsend is invested in the family legacy, his wife Lisa takes care of day-to-day operations while Townsend works as an instructor at Riverwalk Golf Course in Mission Valley. The Townsend family tradition may continue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Monday afternoon, the San Diego City Council rescinded regulations on short-term rentals in an 8-1 vote. On Aug. 1, the council voted 6-2 in favor of rules to regulate short-term vacation rentals in San Diego. The regulations were set to take effect in July 2019.  These regulations limited the rentals to primary residences, which would force some investors or owners of more than one home to sell their properties or rent them out long-term.City Councilwoman Lorie Zapf was Monday’s lone vote against the repeal.The group Share San Diego called Monday's vote "an important step towards fair and effective short-term rental regulations." 690

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Pint-sized protesters lined the sidewalks outside of Cardiff Elementary School, holding signs reading "BUILD OUR SCHOOL!"The District began construction in June, tearing down old buildings to make room for new ones. The project is being paid for by a million voter-approved bond from 2016.Principal Julie Parker says the school is over 100 years old and that the buildings they tore down were 60-70 years old and outdated. Right now, students are in temporary accommodations. "These are our eight portables, these portables are about ten years over their lifespan now, as you can see they're rusted out."Parker says rainwater leaked into three of the portable classrooms during recent storms. She says the temporary accommodations were only supposed to last a year, but a new lawsuit is now halting the construction progress. "We're continuing to pursue legal avenues in order to make construction continue again because it is obviously detrimental to students who attend school here," said Parker.A group called Save the Park and Build the School filed the lawsuit.Cardiff resident Eleanor Musick is the group's director."We're only asking the District to follow the law, and who more than a public agency should we be able to expect to follow the law? And they gambled. They gambled with our taxpayer money, they gambled with the kids, they tore down all those buildings when they didn't have all the approvals, and they still don't have the approvals," said Musick. Save the Park believes the District had an inadequate environmental impact report, which a judge agreed with. They also allege the school district's plan goes beyond what was initially approved in the bond measure.The group also opposes the construction of a multipurpose building on District-owned land, which is open to the public after hours. The land has federal protections, and Musick says the District only received a conditional approval from the National Park Service to move forward. But the District says it is subject to two straightforward conditions that are in the process of being completed. They add that the California Department of Parks and Recreation Office of Grants and Local Services approval recommends that the National Park Service approve the grant boundary adjustment for the project. Principal Parker says putting the multipurpose room on that land, and separating it from the school, is essential because the building will sometimes need to be accessed by the public for non-school-related functions. Parents say they're frustrated by the lawsuit and don't want to see their kids stuck in temporary accommodations while the legal process plays out. "There's no covered eating area so when it rains their backpacks get wet, they have to eat in their classroom. They have very limited play area. They have no common room to gather in. But we all knew this was the small price, and the expectation was that students would be back in classrooms next year," said Annessa Baird, a Cardiff parent of two.Many parents believe Save the Park's agenda is questionable and that they actually want to protect their ocean views.Musick says that's false and that her view was worse before construction. "One of the first things I tried to argue and plead with the District was don't cut down all the trees. There were some beautiful 75-year-old Torrey pines on that property, and they blocked my ocean view. And they're all cut down now," said Musick.She also says claims that their group is made up of only a handful of people is false and that dozens have contributed to the effort. The District says it's disappointed with the judge's ruling and that it will add to mounting legal fees and project costs.The District intends to ask the Court to reconsider its decision. 3788

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police have released photos of the man accused of badly beating a Pacific Beach bouncer Sunday night. According to police, four men tried to enter through the side door of a restaurant on the 700 block of Grand Avenue around 9:20 p.m. Sunday when a bouncer told the group they had to use the main entrance. As a confrontation escalated, police say one of the men picked up a metal crowd barrier pole, hitting the bouncer in his head. Others in the group then reportedly started fighting with other bouncers at the restaurant before all four men left, according to police. The bouncer who was hit in the head suffered a skull fracture and brain bleed. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Another bouncer suffered a broken nose and two other staff members suffered some bumps and bruises. The man suspected of swinging the pole was described as black, in his 30s, 6 feet tall, and 250 pounds with a muscular build. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One year ago, life forever changed for Navy EOD technician Kenton Stacy and his family.He was in a Syrian hospital clearing IEDs when one exploded, leaving him with a two percent chance of survival. His comrades fought to save his life and did, but Kenton was left paralyzed and unable to talk.He's now receiving care at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla.“We’re all ready for him to come home, it's just been hard juggling being here, being with the kids," said Lindsey Stacy, Kenton's wife.The couple has four children, one with special needs.As they work through Kenton's recovery, the family was hit with yet another unexpected hardship.They've been renting their Chesapeake, VA home for the last two years, not realizing tenants were destroying the house.The carpet and blinds were destroyed as well as much of the hardwood floors. The tenants also smoked cigarettes in the home."I just couldn't believe that people would destroy someone else’s property like that, shocking and it hurt,” said Lindsey.She shared what happened on their Facebook page #StacyStrong.It didn't take long for the community to step up and help make it right, with members of the EOD community spending hours to repair the house.Real estate agent Julie Fish, wife of an EOD tech, also stepped up to help.She's going to help sell the house without taking a commission and has enlisted help for labor and needed repairs. "The EOD community, they really have made it that they're taking care of it and it's one less thing I have to worry about," said Lindsey. "It really hits home that everyone really does just care and sees how much he has sacrificed for our country."Fish says many have already stepped up to help with the house but that they may still need a sliding door and fence.Those wanting to help the Stacy family can also donate to their Go Fund Me page.  1880
