SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — It's not paper or plastic that's taking over a Scottsdale, Arizona recycling center — it's trash. Every day at Republic Services workers line a conveyer belt scouring for items that don't belong. But the belts are moving slower than they used to. That's because so much trash has been moving through, workers need more time to pick it out. "A cushion like this, not recyclable," Richard Coupland with Republic Services said. "Baby seats, not recyclable." But it's not just time-consuming. Coupland said when you put things that don't belong into a recycle bin, it can contaminate the other items that do belong. In return, that produces more trash. "Focus on your fundamental material, but most importantly that it's empty, clean and dry," he said. Fundamental material includes paper, plastic, aluminum and cardboard. However, if you're recycling a ketchup bottle, it must be completely empty and rinsed out. All the trash coming through the center is also costing more money. Coupland said China was at one time one of the largest buyers of recyclable material. However, the center has stopped shipping items there. "They've lowered their acceptable criteria from 3 percent to .5 percent," Coupland said. "That's a level that few folks are able to achieve right now without making significant changes to their operation." That's forcing the company to sell all it's paper, plastic, and aluminum to different markets, at a cost. "Those markets are not able to pay the same value for the material," Coupland said.In return, that can cost you more when it comes to pick up fees. However, you can help by being conscious about what you put in your bin. "Many don't realize that the bottom of a pizza box which is contaminated with grease of a pizza, that's trash," Coupland said. "No one is interested in buying that. So the proper thing to do is rip the box, give me the top and throw away the bottom."  2052

(KGTV) - The City of San Marcos is turning to crowdfunding to make up for budget shortfalls in their 4th of July plans.For the second straight year, the city set up a GoFundMe website to raise money for fireworks. This year's goal is ,500.City officials tell 10News the city already pitches in ,000 to pay for entertainment, security, permits and other costs associated with their annual Fireworks Extravaganza.They also say traditional donations have brought in about ,000 for fireworks. But the fireworks show costs K."I can tell you, it's the best show in North County," says San Marcos Recreations Programs Manager Andrea Gonzalez. "It's a real show-stopper."Last year's GoFundMe brought in more than ,000. Gonzalez says the city still solicits donations from past donors through the mail and phone calls, but those have been down over the last few years. They decided to get creative and make it easier for people to chip in."It's a lot easier to get on your Facebook page and contribute to a GoFundMe with one click than having to write a check," says Gonzalez.Other 4th of July celebrations have done the same thing. The Lake Murray fireworks show raised ,000 last year through GoFundMe. This year they're up to ,000 in donations.Meanwhile, La Jolla cancelled their show in 2018 because of a lack of funding.Gonzalez says this year's fireworks party will go on as planned, no matter how much money they can raise. Named Kongonaphon kely, which means tiny bug slayer, the creature looked like a dinosaur but scampered the Earth earlier, predating both dinosaurs and flying pterosaurs. Scientists and doctors are watching closely as some children head back to school with in-person learning. Many are hoping extra precautions will keep students safe. But there are big questions surrounding the safety of lunchtime."If you’re doing all the right things, masking kids, keeping them distanced and washing hands, you are going to decrease your chance of transmission. But if they take masks off and they're indoors in close proximity, you’ve sort of derailed your entire plan because lunchtime is the most high-risk time to transmit COVID-19 or any illness," says Dr. Tanya Altmann, a pediatrician with the American Academy of Pediatrics.Dr. Altmann says it's important during lunchtime, that children are at least six feet apart and not facing each other."I would recommend that in any area around the country where you can eat lunch outdoors, to eat lunch outdoors because that is safer," says Dr. Altmann.Dr. Jay Varkey, the hospital epidemiologist at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, agrees that school administrators should have students eat outside, when weather permits."You can’t wear a mask and eat a lunch. Depending on the age of the children, I don’t think a lot of school-age children are maybe the most diligent in terms of washing their hands before and after a meal. So, I do think it’s a potentially high-risk area," says Dr. Varkey.Dr. Varkey adds, the same goes with school employees who may be heading to a teacher's lounge for lunch or a cup of coffee. Those school spaces need to be recreated to allow for more social distancing."First and foremost, it goes back to what metrics you need to open up schools. As much as I am a believer in in-person learning and the benefits of it, the reality is, in order to open safely you have to have control of COVID-19 transmission in the community," says Dr. Varkey.As public health officials work to battle COVID-19 in their communities, Dr. Altmann recommends schools reimagine spaces on their campuses.Dr. Altmann says, “You could maybe repurpose your library as a teacher break room. You could use the auditorium as a lunch space or even the gym since we’re not going to be having contact sports."Dr. Altmann says children eating lunch inside their classrooms is also okay, as long as no desks are facing each other. SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KGTV) - The captain of the sister ship to the one that caught fire off the coast of Santa Barbara, killing at least 25, is sticking up for its crew.Ian Higgins is the captain of the Vision, a sister ship nearly identical to the Conception, which caught fire near Santa Cruz island Monday morning. Higgins spoke to 10News after media reports calling the safety protocol of the Conception into question."That vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard annually and also every five years for a more complete inspection," said Higgins, who works for Truth Aquatics. "If you think the Coast Guard would allow a vessel carrying that many passengers to operate without any type of fire suppression system, I don’t know what one would believe."RELATED: 20 bodies recovered from boat fire off coast of Southern California, officials sayRecords show the Conception had no issues after a Coast Guard inspection in February. Higgins said any report that the passengers were locked in the ship is patently false. He said passengers are given safety briefings the morning after they get on the ship.
