As the clock winds down on the midterms, there are scattered reports of people across the country still having trouble voting. ATLANTA, Ga. -- Even though Georgia didn't swing overwhelmingly blue, Democratic voters are hopeful the purple state is becoming more progressive.Pastor John Elmore's 10-year-old daughter isn’t old enough to vote, but this election has his fifth grader engaging in politics more than he ever expected.It's a trend he's noticed across his entire community. People are calling for unity and hope."That we as a people, no matter who's in office, will do our part to bring about a change," said Elmore, pastor of the 3D Church and a community activist.Change is something his family is witnessing firsthand. They’re in Georgia, one of the most contentious states of the 2020 election."I'm very proud to see Georgia purple," said Elmore.Elmore, his family and fellow voting activist Toccaro Combs held an Election Night watch party at their church. They were hoping to see Georgia swing blue by a landslide, but instead were left with sharply divided results for days."You could see it as division, but you can also see it as growth. I see an opportunity for a new nation, a new look, a new energy, the spirit behind the people of this nation, so I see it as opportunity," said Elmore.Elmore and Combs teamed up this year to build that opportunity for change."We have registered thousands, and hundreds of thousands, of new voters that have activated their voices, and to see Georgia be purple, I'm not surprised. I am just excited," said Combs.Tocarro said the excitement after this election is so different from four years ago. "The day after Election Day in 2016, I woke up and I was horrified. I didn't know, especially as a Black woman in this country, what it looked like for me under an administration that was opposite of my values, and I refused to wake up feeling that way this time around, no matter how the results came out," said Combs.This election saw record turnout for African American voters in Georgia, a success Elmore and Combs believe started from the ground up."We have good community leaders that are fighting hard daily, often to make sure that everyone has a fair opportunity. Yes, suppression is still real. It's still prevalent, it still exists, but I am proud to see that there's starting to be some balance, some awareness, being brought to it, and at this point, I could see the light at the end of the tunnel," said Elmore.The slow and steady fight to get people involved in elections exploded this year, a change Elmore is grateful to be part of."I've noticed people more in tune to politics, people that never cared before, so I think it's brought an awakening to the community."It’s these conversations, and the neighborhood movements, energizing communities of color to fight beyond party lines, beyond state lines, for a country where all voices are heard."It's my hope that change is now, and is happening, and is forever going to keep progressing," said Elmore."Together we are the United States of America, does not matter who you voted for. As part of the response to one of the deadliest school shootings in US history, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel told reporters on Wednesday that deputies that patrol high schools in the county will be equipped with rifles. The announcement came on the same day that President Donald Trump called for an end for schools being considered "gun-free." As part of a discussion, which included the families of the 17 people killed during last week's Florida school shooting, Trump suggested that school staff carry guns. "This would be obviously only for people who were very adept at handling a gun, and it would be, it's called concealed carry, where a teacher would have a concealed gun on them. They'd go for special training and they would be there and you would no longer have a gun-free zone," Trump said.  839

Aspiring actress Mareli Miniutti was granted a restraining order against famed lawyer Michael Avenatti on Monday, accusing him of physical and verbal violence -- including hitting her face with pillows, calling her an "ungrateful b****" and dragging her across the floor.The revelation comes after Avenatti was arrested by Los Angeles police on suspicion of felony domestic violence last week. CNN has confirmed that Miniutti is the alleged victim in the arrest. Avenatti, who was released on bail the day of the arrest, has not yet been charged in the case.In a declaration filed as part of the request for a restraining order in Los Angeles Superior Court, Miniutti, 24, said she and Avenatti had been dating since October 2017 and living together since January of this year.She described an altercation last week in which she and Avenatti began fighting about money, leading to him calling her an "ungrateful, f***** b****." Avenatti proceeded to get "very close to me in a threatening manner that made me afraid," Miniutti said in the declaration.As the altercation worsened, Miniutti alleged, Avenatti "began forcefully hitting me in the face with pillows from the bed," and then grabbed her wrist and, later, her arm."He dragged me on the floor of the apartment towards and out of the door into the public hallway," Miniutti said. "I was wearing only my underwear and t-shirt at the time, and suffered scratches to the bare skin on my side and leg."Miniutti said she eventually went down to the ground floor of the building, with Avenatti following. Miniutti said a friend picked her up and took Miniutti to her home, after which she called the police and gave them her statement.The next day, Miniutti said, she returned to the building to retrieve her belongings from the apartment. As she began to gather her things, Miniutti said, Avenatti appeared, so she ran to the balcony in fear."A short while later, police detectives entered the apartment and told me that (Avenatti) had been arrested," Miniutti said in the declaration.Miniutti also said there was another occasion -- in February of this year -- when Avenatti "acted in a physically violent manner" toward her. He "had been drinking," she said, "and became angry at me.""Respondent pushed me out of the apartment into the public hallway where I hit my head against a door across the hallway. Respondent then threw my shoes at me, striking me in the leg."She also alleged that Avenatti had a history of being "very verbally abusive and financially controlling" toward her.Avenatti has vehemently denied the allegations against him, telling CNN he never laid a hand on Miniutti or any woman and that he expects to be fully exonerated.Avenatti's attorneys -- Evan Jenness and Richard Beada -- shared a different version of events in a statement given to police on Monday."Ms. Miniutti and Mr. Avenatti had an argument while in Mr. Avenatti's apartment during which Ms. Miniutti behaved in a volatile, agitated and irrational manner. However, Mr. Avenatti did not inflict any corporal injury or cause any traumatic condition upon Ms. Miniutti," Avenatti's attorneys said.They also said Avenatti's statements are bolstered by witnesses, as well as surveillance video in the halls, elevator and entrance to the building. There is, however, no mention in the attorneys' statement of any video inside the apartment where the alleged incident took place.Avenatti tweeted Tuesday afternoon: "I want the truth to be known - all of it. The truth about the alleged incident on Tues night/Wed am, as well as the truth about TMZ's completely false reporting about last Wed afternoon. I want it ALL disclosed. ASAP. As Vietnam veterans grow older, the National Park Service said it has seen an increase in people leaving remains at the Veteran's Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., so it has now put up signs asking people to stop.Nancy Skinner wanted to honor her fiance Ron Looney after he died in 2008. When he died, Skinner had him cremated.Other than Looney's remains, photos were one of the few things she had left of Looney. The snapshots capture the motorcycle trips the couple took around the country, family get-togethers, and even Looney’s time in the Vietnam War.“He was over there five times,” recalled Skinner.Soon after his death, she took some of Looney's ashes and set out on one last adventure with him. “I went ahead and got what I thought would probably be the right amount if you cremated his heart, the right amount size,” said Skinner.She packed the ashes in a wooden box and drove from Mississippi to Washington, D.C., to leave Looney's cremains at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Wall.“It was something he so wanted to do, so wanted to be there. I knew that was something he would have wanted,” said Skinner.The National Park Service said Looney’s cremains are one of about 70 that have now been left at the wall over the years.“A lot of Vietnam veterans feel very connected to the memorial. It speaks to them in a way a lot of other places in the country don't,” said Janet Folkerts, a curator with the Park Service. “Cremains are kind of definitely more sensitive and something that needs a higher standard of care than we're really equipped to deal with here,” said Folkerts.The cremains left at the wall are currently brought to a Park Service building and kept in a metal storage cabinet. But Folkerts said the Park Service is looking into new options.“We’re hoping some veterans cemetery could help us with the cremains we already have and we could setup some system in the future,” she said.While Skinner said she understands the Park Service’s concerns, she hinted she would still have found a way to honor Looney’s wishes.“I made it a pretty little box. And I didn't figure anybody would mind. Makes me wonder if I need to go back and pick him up. But his ashes are still gonna stay there. Sorry," Skinne said.  2274
