BAYTOWN, Texas — Texas State Rep. Briscoe Cain went to Facebook after seeing a homework assignment regarding U.S. President Donald Trump. The lesson was teaching 7th-grade students how to inference using 10 student-written essays at Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District. The assignment required students to read an excerpt from "Trump Against American Values" by Parker, and then answer the questions that followed. The first question asked, "Which of the following conclusions would the author most likely agree with?" The answer to the questions was, "Donald Trump should not be president."The second question asked what the reader would infer from reading the passage. The answer being, "Mexican Americans are the major group upset with President Trump."Cain said in his Facebook post that the superintendent of the district, Randal O'Brien, is aware of the issue and has taken corrective action. "It is our understanding the [sic] he and his administration have done all that state law allows them to do at this time," Cain said. "Superintendent O’Brien is and remains the right man for the job."Cain was made aware of the post by Chris Felder, a concerned parent at the school. “This was an assignment my 7th grade daughter received that I found to be very out of place to say the least," Felder commented, according to Cain's post. "This type of non-factual rhetoric has no place in our schools regardless of who the president is. My children have experienced great teachers in the classroom, but have also had to put up with those who see their role as indoctrinators, not educators. As a fellow graduate of Goose Creek ISD, I’m embarrassed that this is what our District tolerates.”Cain went on to say that no teacher should attempt to force their beliefs on students, and the teacher should be stripped of her title. Apple just bought the bulk of Intel's smartphone-modem business in a deal valued at billion. The deal includes about 2,200 Intel employees who will now join Apple, as well as intellectual property, equipment and leases, the two companies said in a joint release put out Thursday.Apple will now hold over 17,000 wireless technology patents, according to the release. Intel will still be able to develop modems for non-smartphone applications, such as PCs and autonomous vehicles. The deal still must undergo regulatory approval, but both companies said it's expected to close in late 2019.The acquisition will give Apple more of a role in developing key parts of its smartphones at a time when iPhone sales are faltering as devices last longer and people have stopped replacing them as frequently. The smartphone-modem chips allow phones to connect to wireless data networks. In April, Intel said it would no longer make 5G modems for smartphones, citing "no clear path to profitability and positive returns" in the business. Going forward, it will continue to work on other products related to 5G.Separately, Intel reported second quarter results on Thursday that beat analyst projections for both revenue and earnings. Its shares were up more than 5% in after-hours trading. 1287

At least 28 churches around the country have now opened their doors to people fearing deportation and family separation. First Unitarian Church in Denver was one of the first to adopt the designation.Reverend Mike Moran with First Unitarian Church says it hasn’t always been easy.“We have received threats. We have received bomb threats, personal threats,” he explains.Members of the church formed a volunteer guard network, partly because of those threats. They patrol the church and guard the door almost 24-hours per day.Randy Chase, 69, is one of the guards. He spends much of his time on duty checking to make sure doors are closed and locked.“These instructions envision talking to officials and officers through the door, through this crack in the door and passing paper back and forth,” says Chase, pointing to a piece of paper taped to a wall.Chase says he worries his friendly nature may be taken by immigration agents as an invitation to come in. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have come under scrutiny in the past for what some critics say are tricky tactics.Chase says he’s concerned those tactics could affect Jeanette Vizguerra, the woman he is trying to protect.Vizguerra has spent more than two decades in the U.S. and hasn’t been able to get citizenship. She has a stay order, which allows her to remain in the U.S. She’s living in sanctuary at First Unitarian Church.“I am an activist for more than 25 years,” Vizguerra says in Spanish. She’s worried her position as an activist makes her one of ICE’s targets.“I am of 10 people around the country who are very vocal. My social media accounts are monitored,” she explains.Vizguerra sees the church as the safest place she can be while her case plays out. She says it won’t impact her activism.“I see my future as continuing to help people because it is my nature,” says Viguerra. “That is my challenge to achieve solutions to the issue of immigration.” 1947

Atlanta’s mayor says two police officers have been fired and three placed on desk duty pending review over excessive use of force during a protest incident Saturday night.Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said at a news conference Sunday that she and police Chief Erika Shields made the decision after reviewing body-camera footage. Shields called it “really shocking to watch.”Officials say the incident came to light via video that circulated online. It shows a group of police officers in riot gear and gas masks surround a car being driven by a man with a woman in the passenger seat. The officers pull the woman out and appear to use a stun gun on the man. They use zip-tie handcuffs on the woman on the ground. The couple did not appear to be fighting police on the video.Bottoms said charges have been dropped against the woman, and the man has been released.Local reporters, who captured footage of the incident, said the police had earlier broken the glass on the car. A reporter said police also flattened the tires. The city is under curfew again Sunday night.I watched this unfold last night. Call it a comeback!Venerable toy retailer Toys 'R' Us will be back as it opens its first new location in Paramus, New Jersey after closing all locations nationwide in 2018. The location will have a grand opening Saturday morning. A second location is slated to open on Dec. 7 in Houston. The stores are smaller than previous locations. The new, smaller stores will emphasize the latest, most popular toy products and brands, Toys 'R' Us said. Toys 'R' Us will face even steeper competition than it faced when it filed for bankruptcy. Stores such as Walmart and Target have expanded their toy selections, although Target has formed a digital partnership with Toys 'R' Us. “Toys“R”Us is built into the fabric of childhood and for more than 70 years has been the most trusted source for toys and play,” said Richard Barry, CEO at Tru Kids, the proud parent of the Toys“R”Us brand. “With the return of Toys“R”Us stores in the U.S., we are bringing a highly engaging, experience-driven retail destination that celebrates play and deepens the connection between the world’s best toy, play and entertainment brands and customers.”Toys 'R' Us officials call the two new locations "experimental."In October, the Toys 'R' Us website relaunched with games, action figures and a full selection of toys. The inventory comes from Target, which bolstered its toy selection following Toys 'R' Us ceasing operations in 2018.Ordering from Toys 'R' Us provides the same type of shopping experience as using Target's website. Those who have Target credit cards can make purchases through the Toys 'R' Us site. Also, customers can use Target's in-store pickup service.“Target’s leadership in toys, digital and fulfillment are an unbeatable platform for Toys“R”Us to reconnect with their fans while we introduce them to the ease and convenience of shopping at Target,” said Nikhil Nayar, senior vice president of merchandising, Target. “By applying our capabilities in a new way with Toys“R”Us, we can serve even more toy shoppers, drive new growth, and build on our toy leadership.”Justin Boggs is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. 2134
