The birthday party for a 5-year-old Davenport, Iowa boy turned into one he’ll never forget when several officers from the Davenport Police Department accepted his invitation to attend.Jackie Martin took to Facebook to share the story of her son, Brayden, and his love for police officers. According to Martin, he loves everything about them, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise when Brayden decided he wanted to have a police officer-themed birthday party this year.Brayden personally delivered invitations to the police station in hopes of getting to see a squad car.But what he got in return was so much more.Over the course of the day, seven different officers made their way to Brayden’s party. Detective Donnie Pridemore even brought a pin-on badge with him and Brayden was pinned an official junior officer of the Davenport Police Department.“They went above and beyond to make my son feel like part of the team and really made today so special and allowed us the opportunity to continue to show Brayden the importance of respecting the law and those who uphold it,” said Martin, “they may not wear capes but today, they were definitely the heroes.”Check out the full post from Jackie: 1206

TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma — Cherokee Nation is the largest tribe with 365,000.On Monday, the tribe fired out a statement denouncing a U.S. senator's claim to her Native American ancestry through DNA testing.Senator Elizabeth Warren claims DNA testing confirms her Native American heritage. That test is something the Cherokee Nation, a sovereign nation, says does not prove anything."To talk now about her ancestry, her DNA analysis we think it muddy's the waters a little bit," said Chuck Hoskin, Jr., Secretary of State for the Cherokee NationHoskin says he finds Senator Warren's claims hurtful."That is a very special status," Hoskin said. "It's a legal status. It's a status that our ancestors fought long and hard for that's embedded in tribal law, embedded in federal law specifically in the treaties. We think as sovereign nations that means something,"To claim membership to the Cherokee Nation, you must be able to prove that you can trace your self back to the tribe's Dawes Rolls, which is the original enrollment documents."People have this family lore and they can't prove it and people go through long and drawn out processes sometimes," Cherokee citizen Deborah Reed said. "They'll submit paperwork to the Cherokee Nation because there's an application process."Cherokee citizens say this isn't a red versus blue issue, but it's about protecting treaties and their sovereignty."I think the important takeaway is that Elizabeth Warren remembers that the Cherokee Nation is who decides who their citizens are not individuals," Reed said.Sen. Warren is rumored to be throwing in her name to run against President Donald Trump in 2020. 1648

The approval of the first COVID-19 vaccines comes amid a critical point in the pandemic. The U.S. has recorded two straight weeks of record high hospitalizations. On Thursday, the country surpassed 17 million total cases of COVID-19 and December is now the deadliest month since the start of the pandemic.Infectious disease expert Dr. Michael Lewis, a retired U.S. Army colonel, worries that Americans may become desensitized to the staggering death totals."It's the 'boy who cried wolf' kind of thing," Lewis said.Lewis recognizes the severity of the virus but is worried about the broader implications of the pandemic. He's worried about the future of children who are attending school virtually and haven't seen their friends for months, the damage to small businesses and their employees who have been affected by stay-at-home orders and the damage to people's physical health due to a drop in routine medical care.Lewis says the number of new prescriptions for conditions like heart disease and diabetes have dropped and that the country is seeing more new cases of advanced cancers."(The pandemic will) make actual death rates go up in the long term, the two- to five-year kinda kind of thing," Lewis said.Lewis is advocating for people to re-evaluate their physical and mental health as the pandemic drags on."We've got to figure out how to break that cycle of stress, and that's a very personal thing you've got to figure out how to take responsibility for yourself," he said.Lewis wants people to focus on healthy lifestyles:m Eating right, exercising and limiting a daily intake of virus-related information. He says Americans should live cautiously but not in fear and recommends not forgoing medical or psychological attention. He adds that stress can harm a person's immune system — the very thing everyone needs for protection against COVID-19 and other diseases. 1882
