SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego region's unemployment rate declined to 9% in September, a half-percent drop from the previous month, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 11,700 jobs month-over-month -- from 1,372,900 to 1,384,600 -- while farm employment remained unchanged at 9,600.The unemployment rate at this time last year was 2.9%. The region lost 117,700 non-farm jobs and 500 agricultural jobs over the year.According to the San Diego Workforce Partnership, the unemployment numbers are skewed by a large number of San Diegans who have dropped out of the workforce altogether.Whether taking care of aging parents, helping children with school as distance learning continues or concerns over contracting the virus at work, as many as 30,000 people have dropped out of the workforce since February. Unemployment rates typically only count people who are actively looking for work, so these people may not be factored into economic recovery data."While there are lots of production jobs available, San Diegans are still hesitant to go back to work," said Mel Katz, executive officer of Manpower West. "We are seeing hourly wages increasing by two or more dollars per hour to entice workers to leave home and enter the workforce."The region's unemployment rate rose to 15% in May during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to EDD data, while data from the San Diego Association of Governments showed rates of nearly 30% unemployment in May.In September, the state's unemployment rate dropped to 10.8% from 11.6% the previous month, and the nation's decreased to 7.7% from 8.5%.Government jobs led in local monthly gains, with 6,800 jobs added to the region's total. Leisure and hospitality gained 2,500 jobs; educational and health services 2,400; trade, transportation and utilities 1,400; other services 1,100; and professional and business services gained 100.Construction posted the most job losses, with 1,400. Manufacturing lost 900, financial activities 200 and information posted a loss of 100 jobs.Comparing year-over-year, leisure and hospitality continue to top the list in jobs lost, with a total of 52,400 jobs lost since last September -- 38,400 of which came in accommodation and food services.Since the same time last year, government lost 14,200 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities 13,900; educational and health services 10,600; other services 10,300; manufacturing 6,500; construction 4,400; information 3,500; and financial activities 3,400.Professional and business was the sole industry to post job gains year-over-year, with 1,500 new jobs. 2706

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The eighth annual U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and Dimensional Art Expo will kick off Saturday along Broadway Pier.The three-day event will feature a dozen of the best sand sculptors in the world, including artists from the U.S., the Netherlands, Canada, Russia and South Korea. Each sculpture weighs upwards of 10 tons once completed, according to event organizers.Roughly 300 tons of sand were dumped on the pier Monday to prepare for the event, which generates about million in revenue for the city each year. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Protesters are planning to assemble Saturday outside the California Democratic Party Convention in San Diego as part of a ``Working People's Day of Action,'' according to a local labor organization.The rally will start outside Convention Center Park at 3:30 p.m., according to the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council. Workers will advocate for their rights two days before the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to hear a case that could have a dramatic impact on the ability of workers' unions to raise money.The case, Janus v. AFSCME Council 31, will determine whether public sector labor unions are allowed to charge mandatory fees to all workers in their organizations. The case could overturn the Supreme Court's 1977 ruling in Abood v. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City officials Saturday will rededicate a Skyline-area police substation in honor of a patrolman gunned down nearly four decades ago during a traffic stop two blocks from where the precinct house now stands.The SDPD Southeastern Division headquarters will be renamed the Archie Buggs Memorial Building during a late-morning ceremony on the 39th anniversary of the slaying. Two of the late lawman's relatives -- his sister, Gwen Buggs, and cousin, Pam Jones -- are scheduled to be present for the event.Buggs, 30, came under fire in the early morning hours of Nov 4, 1978, after stopping a 1968 Chevrolet driven by 17-year-old gang member Jesus Cecena in the 7100 block of Skyline Drive.The teen fired five times at Buggs, then paused, walked toward the downed officer and shot him in the head at point-blank range. Buggs died on the street, his hand on his service revolver.Cecena was convicted of murder and sentenced to serve life in prison without the possibility of parole in August 1979. Because of his age at the time of the killing, his sentence was reduced to a seven-years-to-life term in 1982.Three years ago, a change in the law made Cecena eligible for youth offender parole. His release was approved by the state Parole Board in April 2014, but Gov. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Pride Live, the online pride parade and festival, kicked off a day-long event today featuring elected officials, community organizations and businesses.Because of the pandemic, organizers took the historic Pride Parade march through Hillcrest online -- sdpride.org/live/ -- and began at 10 a.m. with a slide show of photos from 46 years of the parade, which started in 1974. The San Diego Women's Chorus followed with a virtual singing of the national anthem. An interfaith blessing, with clergy from various denominations, gave their blessings.In 1994, the San Diego Women Motorcycle Riders first appeared to officially kick off the parade, which usually had about 350,000 participants and 200 pride floats, along with 400 volunteers.This year, about 12 motorcycles from the group took off from the site of the Hillcrest pride flag at University Avenue and Normal Street. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulkener gave a few opening remarks, saying, "We can work and lift each other up and get through this pandemic. We stand united in our battle against bigotry and hate.
