SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Underused land owned by San Diego's Metropolitan Transit Service could help address the region's need for affordable housing — though not entirely.That's according to a new report by the think-tank Circulate San Diego, which suggests nearly 60 acres of MTS-owned land, including parking lots and structures, could better serve the community as new homes."Empty and underutilized parking lots are a stark and visible demonstration of public lands being underutilized. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - US Coast Guard officers will be out in full force over the holiday weekend. They've launched Operation Dry Water to help cut down on the number of arrests for people boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol."We want everybody to have a great time and do it in a safe manner," says Lt. Commander Ellen Motoi, the Chief of Enforcement for the San Diego Sector of the Coast Guard."We're going to have a lot more boats out there from the local side, as well as Harbor Police. They'll be promoting safety and looking for boaters under the influence," says Motoi.Alcohol is the leading cause of boating accidents, according to the Coast Guard. They look for erratic speed, dangerous course headings and boats coming too close to other vessels as warning signs that someone may be drunk while operating a boat.Operation Dry Water is a nationwide program. In 2018, they made 494 BUI arrests and issued 7,305 other citations.Like driving, the legal limit for alcohol while operating a boat is .08. Anyone arrested for BUI could face jail time, a loss of their license/credentials and a hefty fine.Aside from BUI, Motoi says the emphasis of Operation Dry Water focuses on safety."It's not worth it," says Motoi. "We encourage everyone to think twice before you get on a boat."Motoi says the most common mistake people make is not to wear a life jacket. The Coast Guard says 80% of all drownings happen because people aren't wearing one.The Coast Guard also wants boaters to know they shouldn't shoot off flares or fireworks from their boats. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A group of ten college girls rode their bikes from Seattle to San Diego to fight sex trafficking. The group is comprised of women from Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Alabama.Beginning in Seattle and ending in San Diego, these first-time riders biked down the West Coast, meeting with communities and local leaders along the way to spark conversations and raise money for the long-term, rehabilitative care for children rescued from sex traffickers.This is the third year for Pedal the Pacific and this year they nearly doubled their financial goal. They ended up raising over 250 thousand dollars. The organization tells 10News, "The team just received a 0,000 donation from the Harry W. Bass Jr Foundation. The foundation says they were appalled by Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged crimes, but they found a positive way to make a difference with their donation to Pedal the Pacific."All of the money raised will be donated to The Refuge Ranch, the largest long-term, live-in rehabilitation facility for child survivors of sex trafficking in the US. 1071

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- When COVID-19 forced everyone in, it also forced Canyon Crest Academy students Erika and Vivian to get creative"When quarantine and school closures became a reality for us, I really wanted to give back to society and especially how it's been draining resources for hospitals that are on the front lines, I wanted to use my skillset to provide in any way I can," said Erika. The duo excelled in subjects around STEM and it all started from there."If we're good at physics or chemistry, it's not good enough to just be good at it, you have to make use of it and make an impact with it. Since we're still students the best way to do it was to help other students reach their potential as well," said Vivian.So the two got busy and in July, they rolled out Level Up Academy, a six-week online course with an in-depth stem curriculum. They even included presentations, slides and assignments."I reached out to underclassmen in various clubs who spread it to their friends, then spread it to parents' coworkers." By the time their program started, 30 students were signed up. The fee was a donation made to their page on Rady Children's Hospital's website, all for COVID-19 efforts."We thought this was a really transparent way to show students and parents that we were actually donating because before we thought about donating to other hospitals but it didn't have this public page. Parents and students would just have to trust us we were donating profits there."They raised over ,000 in donations. Their course ended in August and school's back in session but they said hopefully another group will take over their program for another set of students next summer."I just think its so great how a simple idea I had in March, and uniting people together made an impact." 1796

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A border church and border mosque are calling for a day of unity. A Bi-National Day of Prayer will be held at Friendship Park; a place where families on both sides of the U.S. Mexico border can meet. The group is also releasing a short film to encourage federal leaders to keep Friendship Park open. The film is called “A Prayer Beyond Borders.”“Friendship Park is the only place on the U.S. Mexico border, where families who have been separated by U.S. immigration policy, can come together,” says Dustin Craun with CAIR San Diego. Families “can physically be together.”Worshippers have been holding prayers there every week since 2011. “We can pray together when we can come together. We can break bread together,” says Imam Taha Hassane, with the Islamic Center of San Diego. Worshippers say there have been threats to close Friendship Park, but no action was ever taken. They are hoping their continued presence will show federal leaders they need this space open. “Millions of families in the United States and Mexico have no access to each other at all,” says Craun. “Closing friendship park would close any possibility of them being able to see each other.”First United Methodist Church and the Islamic Center of San Diego are calling for a day of unity for people of all faiths, for the Bi-National Day of Prayer.
