SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Mesa College announced Friday the opening of its on-campus support center for current and former foster youth.The Fostering Academic Success and Transitions Center opened Thursday, coinciding with Mesa College's first week of classes in the fall 2019 semester. The FAST Center offers services such as tutoring, computer access and a food pantry and will serve as a gathering space for youth who have gone through the foster care system."The number one goal we had in creating this program was to make it extremely difficult to NOT be successful," FAST Scholars Program Coordinator Sade Burrell said. "The center is a place for students to get the resources they need, whether that includes counseling, tutoring, food, child care, emergency housing and any other need unique to their situation."Mesa College is the first community college in San Diego County to open an on-campus support center for students in the foster system. Currently, only about one-in-10 foster youth graduate from college and one-third of former foster youth are homeless by age 25. College officials hope the FAST Center will help quell those numbers for students in San Diego."What this center does is say, we see our foster youth. We see their experiences. We see the unique contributions that they bring to the campus; that we understand the many challenges or systemic barriers that are often placed in their way," said Ashanti Hands, the college's vice president of student services. We’re humbled and gratified, but we have seen expressions of hatred towards Phoenix Rising, their head coach, Rick Schantz and their player, Junior Flemmings which have no place in our sport as well as our society. We do not want to see players and coaches that love the sport as much as we do bullied, and their reputations sullied, by unfortunate lapses of judgements when fueled by passion and competition. We do not endorse a player being terminated by the club, but rather given an opportunity to learn from their mistake through league punishment protocols and, most importantly, the support of their club. We believe in second chances and look forward to working with Phoneix Rising on productive ways we can forgive, educated, and grow from these moments.We support “We Will Speak. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Supreme Court ruled this week that a San Diego court must re-examine its decision to allow a criminal defendant to subpoena Facebook to obtain private social media posts and messages he alleged would help him in his defense.The ruling issued Thursday laid out a series of factors for the trial court to consider when weighing whether to allow the defendant to gain access to his alleged victim's restricted posts and private messages.The ruling stems from the criminal case of Lance Touchstone, a Northern California man charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting his sister's boyfriend in Ocean Beach in 2016.Touchstone sought to obtain information from the victim's Facebook posts that the defendant alleged would show his accuser was a violent person, bolstering a self-defense claim.A San Diego Superior Court judge ruled in Touchstone's favor and ordered Facebook to release the information, leading to subsequent appeals.In an opinion authored by Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye, she wrote that the trial court should consider a list of seven factors to consider when deciding whether good cause has been shown to grant the subpoena.These "Alhambra factors" include whether the defendant has shown a "plausible justification" for acquiring the information and whether acquiring the material violates a third party's confidentiality or privacy rights, among others.While the state Supreme Court declined to make its own determination on the subpoena's viability, it ruled for the trial court to re-examine the subpoena issue in light of these factors.Touchstone's attempted murder trial in San Diego remains pending for a date still to be determined, as courts remain closed to the public and jury trials have been delayed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 1826

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State's scheduled football game Friday at Fresno State was canceled Sunday due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the Bulldogs' program.The Mountain West Conference is declaring the game a no contest, and has no plans to reschedule it, conference officials said Sunday.The Aztecs (3-2), who were coming off a 26-21 loss at undefeated Nevada on Saturday, will now hold onto the Old Oil Can trophy for another year after beating Fresno State, 17-7, last season in San Diego.The Bulldogs (3-1) had their planned game Saturday against San Jose State canceled on Friday, also due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the Bulldogs program."We are disappointed about the game on Friday being canceled due to COVID issues but the health and safety of our student-athletes is most important," SDSU athletic director John David Wicker said. "We will actively search for a game this weekend because our coaches, student-athletes and staff want to play."We have reached out to the conference office and the Pac-12 that we are actively looking for a game. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego announced Tuesday the completion of upgrades to 15 of the city's most accident-prone intersections. The improvements are part of the city's Vision Zero program, with a goal of eliminating fatal traffic accidents altogether by 2025 via infrastructure upgrades and traffic safety education. Circulate San Diego released a list last April of the city's 15 most dangerous intersections. Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Circulate San Diego Executive Director Colin Parent held a news conference at the last intersection to be fixed, 33rd Street and El Cajon Boulevard, to discuss the improvements, which include higher-visibility crosswalk designation and audible pedestrian signals and countdown timers. ``This is all about making it safer for everyone -- drivers, pedestrians and cyclists -- as they navigate city streets,'' Faulconer said.``Making crosswalks more visible and adding audible walk signals are just a few of the simple yet effective ways we can make our neighborhoods safer.''
