(KGT) - An historic hiking trail in La Jolla will reopen after a 30-year battle with homeowners.The Princess Street trail goes from the top of the cliff at Princess Street to the water near La Jolla Shores. For years, access to the path had been closed because of a dispute over who owned the land leading to the trail.A homeowner claimed it was on their property and put up a gate blocking access to the trail. Over the years, brush and vegetation had overgrown the trail, making it impossible to hike on.In 2012, the Coastal Commission ruled that the gate was on public land and must be reopened.Now, the Environmental Center of San Diego is overseeing the revitalization and eventual reopening of the trail."Access to the coast is the one public right that we can hold," says Pam Heatherington with the Environmental Center. "We want to get kids out into the natural world. If this is a small part of that, we're up for it."People who live along Princess Street are split on their feelings about the trail. Melinda Merryweather says she remembers using it in the 1960s and wants her grandkids to enjoy it as well. She's been fighting for it to reopen for 23 years."It was a terrible injustice," she says of the gate that blocked access. "It's just so heart-filling to now see this as a reality.""I've been on record that I don't like it," says Dave Reynolds. He and his family have lived in a house next to the trail for four generations. He thinks reopening it will bring a litany of problems to the neighborhood."Safety, possible illegal activity, increased traffic, trash," he says of the issues he foresees. "But it is what it is. We're not happy about it, but there's nothing we can do about it."Supporters say it won't draw crowds, as it goes to an area only popular with divers and local surfers. They say people who want a traditional beach experience will still go to La Jolla Shores nearby.They also say having the trail will allow for easier rescues when people get trapped by the rising tides along the cove.The Environmental Center is now using a ,000 grant to clear the brush on the trail to within 6 inches of the ground. That will allow for a topographical survey, then a design team will create a new path down to the coast.After that, they hope to have the new trail built and open by the end of 2020. 2350

And for the first time, the JCC's cultural season will be all virtual."I think it's incredibly important because the arts broaden horizons, they give us new experiences. They give a little bit of an escape which we all need right now. It's really important that we can offer this arts and ideas season, as well as our other arts, and cultural programming to the community right now."And one of the great things about the new season, is it's being offered for free."What we're hoping to do is have this season entirely under written so that we're able to offer the entire season without charge. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) — Coast Boulevard in La Jolla was shut down Thursday, and will remain temporarily closed, as city crews began emergency construction to stabilize a nearby cave.The city closed Coast Blvd. late Thursday to begin an emergency project to stabilize Cook's Crack after geology experts discovered a zone of weakness in the cave, which is located underneath the street.During a press conference, crews said the concern is an outright collapse of the section of road over the cave. Currently, the weakness "is not a slow settlement" and could fail if erosion happens underneath the street. Much of the dense rock had eroded, and now sand and roots were showing through from underneath.As part of the project, sections of Cave St. and Coast Blvd. will be temporarily closed to traffic for about six weeks. The city said it will make accommodations for nearby residents and business affected by the closure.Officials said the discovery came as the city assessed repairs to Coast Blvd."They said there's been some shift in the road itself," David Heine, owner of nearby Brockton Villa Restaurant, said. "The busiest two weeks of summer, literally ... Obviously safety's the number one concern for any city, and we respect that." Heine said crews are allowing pedestrians to continue to walk through the area.The city called in crews from Texas, who drove in overnight to take over the project. Friday, the crews began drilling into the street above to locate some of the weakest points. Eco-friendly polyurethane will be used to shore up those weak points, crews say.Cook's Crack is located in the area between La Jolla Cove and the popular Cave Store. The section of coastline is populated by several small caves that tourists can explore through an entrance in The Cave Store or kayaking nearby.The section of Coast Blvd. over the cave is a popular route to visit the cove and coastline, as well as restaurants that dot the street. 1954

(AP) — The next Mississippi state flag could have a magnolia instead of the Confederate battle emblem.It’s been nearly two months since legislators acted under pressure to retire the old flag with the rebel symbol that’s widely seen as racist.A flag commission voted Wednesday to recommend a design with the state flower.
