(KGTV) -- The City of Chula Vista is teaming up with local high schools to help beautify one of its most important corridors.Students from High Tech High began painting a mural Tuesday on a business near Broadway and E Street, the first of five new student-painted murals planned along the Broadway corridor this year.Broadway is the highest revenue-producing corridor in the city, said Chula Vista councilmember Jill Galvez, but a 2019 survey by the Institute for Public Strategies highlighted community concerns with graffiti and vandalism. In the survey of 160 businesses along Broadway, more than 70 percent said graffiti and vandalism were a top concern.Galvez challenged high schools to paint city utility boxes last year and says it’s been successful at deterring graffiti.“Artists respect other artists’ work,” she said.“We’ve already seen the delight of people driving by to see beautiful artwork. It brightens your day. This is going to be the first of many projects along Broadway,” she added.In addition to High Tech High, she said Castle Park High School, Chula Vista High School, Hilltop High School and MAAC Community Charter School are working on murals.Two classes of seniors led by art teacher Chelsea Smith. She said students came up with designs then voted on their favorites as a class. "These feelings bring me to believe that I do not deserve anything, that I do not matter, that I am a constant burden to the world."Wang and the victim's parents urged the judge to impose lifetime sex offender registration due to a variety of factors, including the significant age difference and Bucklew's position of authority in the relationship as a school employee.Wang said Bucklew groomed the victim and maintained his relationship with Jane Doe in a secretive manner, indicating he was aware it was inappropriate. Wang said that upon his arrest, Bucklew directed the girl to delete messages sent between them.Wang said Jane Doe leaned on Bucklew for emotional support amid various issues going on in her life, which Bucklew took advantage of to initiate the physical component of the relationship.Bucklew addressed the court and said he was "extremely apologetic" to Jane Doe and her family.He said he's always tried to make himself available as a friend or coach for people to talk to, as happened with Jane Doe."I see now and I acknowledge my actions were unlawful and where I should have drawn the line, I didn't," Bucklew said. "I'm sincerely sorry."I never intended to put Jane Doe or anyone else in a position where their safety, security or welfare was threatened in any way whatsoever. (KGTV) – Police are investigating the death of a woman whose nude body was found in the middle of a Chula Vista street early Thursday morning.At around 12:30 a.m., a person called 911 to report a naked woman lying face down in the middle of the 200 block of Shasta Street, near Second Avenue.Responding police officers checked the woman and found she was not breathing and had no pulse.Despite CPR attempts, the woman -- described as Hispanic, in her 20s, and a Chula Vista resident -- was declared dead at the scene.Police told ABC 10News there was no immediate indication the woman was struck by a vehicle. On Friday, police identified the victim as 33-year-old Laura Rodriguez.Chula Vista police Lt. Dan Peak said, "It's very suspicious at this time. The manner of death is unknown. At this time, we don't know why this person was here and why they were left here in the roadway."Officers are questioning neighborhood residents as part of their investigation."It's a bit of a shock. This is a very quiet neighborhood ... CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Talk about setting the academics bar high.An unexpected message sent to families of Rancho del Rey Middle School in Otay Ranch Wednesday night left about 2000 students trying to explain why they were required to attend Saturday School.("Could you describe the ruckus, sir," was probably said.)The school blitzed automated phone messages, texts, and emails alerting parents or guardians to have their child at school 8 a.m. Saturday morning for a half day of study."A teacher will come out to greet your student and escort them to a classroom, they are released at 12pm. Students should bring school work or reading materials for a 4 hour period of study," the message said.The school, which broadcast the messages to every registered family at around 5 p.m., confirmed about five hours later that the barrage of alerts was an error. "Earlier today a message about Saturday School was sent to all students. Please disregard the message, it was meant for a select group of students that needed to attend," said Rancho del Rey Middle School Assistant Principal Michael Govea.Since the school offices were closed when the messages were sent, nobody was around to answer calls from anxious families. In the span of that radio silence, trepidation across the student body prompted people to search for answers on Facebook."A few of my son friends received a notice for Saturday school from rancho del Rey middle. These kids are good student with no absences.
