(KGTV) - A local company wants to fill the gap of high unemployment among the blind and visually-impaired.While the majority are college-educated, 70 percent are unemployed. San Diego-based company Aira hopes to reverse the trend. The assistive technology service is announcing a new initiative to provide free service through the Aira?Employment Program.Aira uses smart glasses equipped with a camera that streams live video to a remote, human agent. Using the video stream, GPS, and web data, agents offer live, on-demand assistance to people who are blind or visually impaired.Now job-seekers will be able to take advantage of the service for free as they look for employment. Agents will help navigate employment sites, fill out applications, build resumes, and travel to and from meetings with prospective employers. "Besides ignorance of not knowing what a blind person is capable of doing, the accommodation aspect is the other fear and Aira can help bridge a lot of that," said Juan Hernandez, an Aira Software Engineer who is totally blind. With help from the community and national partners, Aira has an ambitious goal of lowering the unemployment number from 70 percent to under 7 percent.By removing barriers, Aira hopes companies will see an opportunity, blind and visually-impaired workers ready to put their vast skills and talents to work.  1436

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Breakdancing has been confirmed as an official Olympic sport. The International Olympic Committee’s pursuit of urban events to lure a younger audience saw street dance battles officially added to the medal events program at the 2024 Paris Games. The IOC executive board also confirmed skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing for Paris. Those three sports will make their Olympic debuts at the Tokyo Games which were postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Ahead of the announcement, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach praised the additions, describing them during an interview in 2019 as events that will make the Summer Games "more gender balanced, more youthful and more urban."Breaking, the preferred term by those who practice breakdancing, actual made its Olympic debut already. It was part of the 2018 Summer Youth Games in Buenos Aires. The Tokyo opening ceremony is July 23, 2021. LAKELAND, Fla. — A Polk County judge denied bond Saturday to a Lakeland, Florida city commissioner facing a second-degree murder charge for the deadly shooting of a suspected shoplifter.Commissioner Michael Dunn will remain held without bond at the Polk County Jail, the judge ruled.Dunn was indicted by a grand jury Friday.The commissioner is accused of fatally shooting 50-year-old Christobal Lopez at Dunn's business, Vets Army & Navy Surplus store in Lakeland, Florida, October 3. Dunn suspected Lopez was trying to leave the store without paying for an item.Surveillance video of the shooting shows Dunn shoot 50-year-old Christobal Lopez, who was pronounced dead on scene.According to statements, Lopez entered the store with his father. As his father was making a purchase, Dunn reportedly witnessed Lopez trying to steal a hatchet. (KGTV) - For the first time, one of the alumni from the prestigious The Bishop’s School in La Jolla is speaking out about how, she says, her former teacher repeatedly sexually abused her. She has never shared her story in a television interview, until now.Investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner broke the story last summer when seven former students at The Bishop's School had come forward and described separate instances. The school reported that five of these were first-hand accounts of sexual misconduct or boundary violations committed by a school employee and in each instance, a different perpetrator was named. Last month, the school reported that the number of alumni coming forward had doubled from seven to 14.We've agreed to not show the former student's face because she wants to protect her family from her past. “Your parents were the ones who sent you to Bishop's,” we say. “What would it do to them if they found out about the alleged abuse?” She responds, “My dad would be devastated.”She's a graduate of the acclaimed private school, where annual tuition is currently ,000.She no longer lives locally, but flew into San Diego to meet us. We've been talking for a year, but only now is she ready to be recorded. “I carried so much shame for so many years as a result of this,” she explains.This May, The Bishop's School updated alumni about the investigation it launched in 2017. The May 3rd, 2019 letter reveals, “To date, 14 alumni have come forward to report incidents of sexual misconduct.”The school also reports, "Ten different perpetrators were identified as having engaged in sexual misconduct that would potentially constitute a crime at the time of occurrence."None of the accused are apparently still with the school and at least two are reportedly dead. There were no reported cases within the last 20 years.The school reports that most of the cases were from the 1970s and 1980s, like the case for the alleged victim who we interviewed.“He was my adviser starting as early as 7th grade,” she tells us. By her junior year, when she 17 and he was about 30, she says their relationship changed.“He said he had a flat tire on his bicycle and asked for a ride home,” she reveals. She says he gave her alcohol and seduced her and they had sex several times over the next few months, while he was her teacher.We ask, “Where would you have sex with him?” She says, “In his bedroom that he shared with his wife.” Next, we ask, “How old was his child during your affair with him?” She responds, “I believe she was seven [years-old].”We go on to question, “Do you think that your work earned you a good grade or do you think it was the sex that earned you a good grade?” She replies, “I completely think it was the sex.”“Were you aware at the time of other teachers having inappropriate relationships with students?” we ask.“Yeah…it was like this subculture that many of us knew about,” she adds.She says she kept her secret for years. “I felt dirty. I felt used,” she tells 10News. She says she used alcohol and drugs to numb her pain.Her case, she says, is one of ten that've now been referred to San Diego Police Department detectives. She tells us that detectives told her that, “they wished they could press charges but because of the statute of limitations, their hands were tied.”San Diego expert criminal defense attorney Gretchen Von Helms says if a victim was underage during the assault, he or she could wait until just before his or her 40th birthday to make a report. “The reason for that was recognizing that some sexual assault victims, [particularly] minors, who may have been assaulted by someone who has authority in their life, may not want to report or may not have the courage to report for many years,” she explains.Yet on January 1st, 2017, a new California law ended any statute of limitations for such crimes. However, the law is not retroactive. It doesn't apply to any assault before 2017, like the one The Bishop’s School graduate alleges.Von Helms explains that the law is not being implemented retroactively in an effort to be fair and reasonable to both the accuser and the accused.“If you were falsely accused of something that happened twenty years ago, how do you go back and reconstruct your alibi or where you were or your defense? It would be nigh impossible to do so,” she adds.The two exceptions to the statute include independent corroboration and DNA evidence.The detective in charge of The Bishop's School investigations declined an interview but confirmed that police received several allegations for review and reported the following in an email to 10News. “6 of those allegations were confidential so we were unable to make contact. Of the 5 remaining, 3 filed police reports that were followed up on and ultimately sent to the District Attorney's Office for prosecutorial review. Any questions regarding statutes of limitations or the status of those cases should be directed to the District Attorney's Office.”Monday, the District Attorney's Office confirmed that all three cases were rejected. In a follow up email, a representative of the DA’s Office wrote, “You should also know that we can only file charges when we believe we can prove them beyond a reasonable doubt.”The school also declined an interview, but in the recent letter to alumni, The Bishop’s School leaders wrote, in part, “…we apologize to everyone who was affected.” School leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to student safety.We ask the graduate who we interviewed, “Do you believe there are other victims who have not come forward, yet?”“Oh, most likely. Yeah,” she responds. This past February, the school began working with a 24-hour reporting service. That's where things are headed as Nevada has become center stage for a legal showdown.The Trump campaign and the Nevada Republican Party are likely to keep knocking on Nevada courthouse doors as our state is poised to become a pawn in a legal chess game surrounding election results and how votes are counted."The Trump campaign hasn't been shy about sort of foreshadowing this stream of lawsuits," said UNLV associate professor of Political Science Rebecca Gill. "And indeed, they started well before Election Day as well."But in one Nevada case, it appears both sides may have come to an agreement to avoid a court battle.Thursday, a proposed settlement in a pending case before the Nevada Supreme Court.On election night, in a unanimous vote, the state's high court rejected an emergency appeal by the Trump campaign and state Republican party that sought to stop counting mail ballots in Clark County. The appeal was from an earlier loss in a lower court where the GOP raised concerns about observing ballot processing and electronic signature verification, with the implication of potential for fraud."But unfortunately for the Trump campaign, there's really no evidence of widespread voter fraud at all, regardless of what type of voting mechanism is used," said Professor Gill. "Mainly because, among other things, voter fraud is a felony. And the return on investment is very low because you would have to risk a felony in order to have an absolutely small chance of changing any outcome, particularly in a presidential election."The state Supreme Court wouldn't stop the count, but agreed to hear an expedited appeal. Then, Thursday afternoon, the appellants asked for an extra week, citing a pending settlement of the case. That after the Clark County Registrar agreed to make all tables where the ballot duplication process occurs visible to public observers.Once everyone signs off, the appeal will be dismissed.If any issues arise, a decision on how to proceed will come no later than Nov. 11 at 4 p.m.In the meantime, Clark County can continue counting mail ballots. Those postmarked by election day that arrives by Nov. 10 must be counted by Nov. 12.In another lawsuit, the Trump campaign and Nevada GOP sued Clark County to force officials to release records including copies of every registered voter's signature. That likely indicates a potential challenge over signature matches of what's on file versus on the actual ballot.A District Court judge denied that request and said most of the other requested records didn’t have to be produced until Nov. 20, after county officials finish counting votes.Of course, the specter of a recount demand looms large depending on how narrow the margin of votes ultimately is. Recounts are done to confirm accuracy, check for mistakes and settle fraud claims.The most infamous recount in U.S. history was Bush vs. Gore in 2000 in Florida."But I think it's important to remember that what happened in Florida in 2000," explains Professor Gill. " It was a very unusual confluence of events that led to a situation where there was a real technical difficulty with the actual mechanics of voting in Florida. And that was coupled with this extremely small difference in the vote counts."In Nevada, we have no rules that would trigger an automatic recount. The candidate defeated in an initial vote count can ask for a recount if they deposit estimated costs of the effort. And the candidate gets reimbursed if the recount changes the race’s outcome.President Trump has threatened to take his election concerns to the United States Supreme Court."But I think if you couple these wider vote margins with the fact that there isn't this one really solid reason to be concerned with the operation of the electoral system," said Professor Gill. "Then I think that it's probably unlikely that anything that would happen in the courts would have that outcome that the Trump campaign is probably looking for."Legal experts say the way the nation's high court would most likely be brought in, would be to review a specific challenge to ballots in a tight race in a state that could tip the balance in the election.Nevada, with its six electoral votes, could be that state.
