But beyond the cute photo opportunities, the hungry kangaroos are at risk of dying on the roads as their feeding times coincide with rush hour.Canberra has more than 30 nature reserves, with most hosting hundreds of Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and it is not unusual to see them in the reserves or in roads or yards nearby, Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Parks and Conservation Service Director Daniel Iglesias told CNN.But he said this winter the animals were far more visible."Canberra is experiencing a perfect storm of hardship for its kangaroos. New records have been set in Canberra for very cold, frosty nights this winter. This, coupled with very dry conditions with very little rain at all in June and July, means there is very little food for kangaroos, " Iglesias said, via email."Sports ovals, suburban yards, schoolyards and roadsides are the few places offering any green grass at all in Canberra at the moment and they act as magnets for kangaroos," he said.Driving in areas with large populations of kangaroos is ill-advised during the animals' dawn and dusk feeding times as they can jump in front of moving vehicles without warning. Many larger cars in country areas have "roo bars" on the front of the vehicle, to act as a breaker for those in the car, should a collision with a rogue kangaroo take place.Kangaroos are social animals and live in large groups known as "mobs," often headed by a dominant male."Get to know where your local mob hangs out and avoid them, or slow down, especially during peak movement periods of dusk and dawn," Iglesias said. 1872

MISSION BAY PARK (CNS) - A 36-year-old woman was hit by a car while riding her moped-style scooter in the Mission Bay Park neighborhood, authorities said today.She was cruising south on Ingraham Street around 1 p.m. Saturday when she took the Sunset Cliffs offramp, according to the San Diego Police Department.``A car tried to pass her on the left and collided with her, causing her to lose control,'' Officer Robert Heims said. ``She was ejected from the scooter.''The woman suffered a pelvic fracture, a broken tooth and multiple abrasions, he said. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life- threatening injuries.Police haven't identified any witnesses. MURRIETA, Calif. (KGTV) -- One second she was getting the all-clear to go into the home, and the next the walls crumbled around her. A mother trapped inside when a Murrieta home when it exploded says there’s only one reason she made it out alive. "I just saw everything crashing down around me, and I thought I was dead, I thought that was it,” said Alexis Haaland, who was inside home when it blew up. Looking at the house Tuesday, Haaland says she’s still in shock she walked away from the explosion with only a few scratches. "I just stood still and I covered my head and I was screaming oh my god, just hoping nothing hit me."Haaland was having solar panels installed at the home she lived in with her family for about a month. She says the solar company told her they hit a gas line and that she should probably leave. She took her two kids and put them outside with her mother and little brother in their van. Haaland says a firefighter told her she could go back in and get her wallet and diaper bag. That’s when the home exploded. "I just knew I had to get out, and I ran to my mom and my kids and my mom just looked at me and was like how did you get out of there."Haaland says she got out through a window that was shattered in the blast. She says she was standing by a wall, the only one left standing after the home exploded. "I'm really shook up still, having a couple panic attacks and stuff, but I'm alive, and that's all that really matters."Haaland says she’s thankful that her kids were outside the home. She says the moments after the explosion were tough, adding that her thoughts are with the man killed in the explosion and those who were injured. "There wasn't much sleep last night. Pretty much any loud noise woke me up."The family says the community has stepped up and offered to help them after they lost everything in the blast. 1865
