HONG KONG, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Sunday he is glad to see that the Olympic spirit has won common acknowledgment among the general public in Hong Kong.     He made the remarks when meeting with delegates of Hong Kong athletes and volunteers set to participate or serve in the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics.     "I am very glad to see that you are all in such a good mood and so energetic. CHENGDU, May 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the Sichuan Provincial government said Tuesday the death toll in the province has exceeded 12,000, and is still rising.     Li Chengyun, vice governor of Sichuan, said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the death toll was based on incomplete figures tallied by 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. He said another 26,206 people were injured, and more than 9,400 people were buried in debris.     Li also provided a breakdown of the death toll, including 161 in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, 7,395 in Mianyang City, 2,648 in Deyang City, 959 in the provincial capital Chengdu and 700 in Guangyuan City. Other casualties were reported in cities including Ya'an, Ziyang and the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Authorities said the death toll might change every hour, as they heard reports from rescuers who were seizing every minute to pull out bodies from the earthquake rubble.     The earthquake, which centered on the province's Wenchuan County at 2:28 p.m. Monday, has left the province in chaos. More than 3.46 million houses were wracked, Li said.     Li said he was deeply saddened by the super earthquake. He called on both officials and the masses in Sichuan to speed up efforts to fight the disaster and rescue themselves.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who arrived in Sichuan Monday afternoon to oversee rescue work, ordered the clearance of rocks and mud slides that were blocking roads to the epicenter by midnight on Tuesday.     "People are trapped in debris; we must use every second," he told an emergency meeting at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday.     On Tuesday afternoon, a brigade of about 20 soldiers have reached Yingxiu Town of the earthquake epicenter Wenchuan, the disaster relief headquarters in the Chengdu Military Area Command said.     The soldiers reported they saw more than 70 percent of the roads in the town were wracked, and nearly all bridges collapsed. A large number of people were believed to be under the debris.     They said 3,000 people were known to have survived, and the town's total population is 12,000. No information on detailed casualties could be available.     Li Shiming, commander of the Chengdu Military Area Command, said the soldiers had distributed food and water to children and injured people in the town, and more supplies would be airdropped to the area.

BEIJING, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Beijing saw 86 "blue sky" days, or days with fairly good air quality, in the first four months of this year, a sign that years of anti-pollution efforts made by the Olympic host city continue to pay off.     The number of "blue sky" days was 11 more than the same period of last year, according to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection.     The Chinese capital recorded 67 blue sky days in the first quarter, 12 more than in the corresponding period last year.     Meanwhile, major pollution indices, including concentrations of sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and particulate matters in the air, kept dropping markedly.     Beijing has input 120 billion yuan (17.1 billion U.S. dollars) in improving the air quality in the past years, and the number of "blue sky" days increased to 246 last year from 100 in 1998, when the capital launched the "blue sky" drive.     Meanwhile, Beijing's neighbouring municipality Tianjin, the provinces of Hebei, Shanxi and Shandong, and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region are lending a hand to the capital to attain anti-pollution goals. These efforts include closing major polluters, removing outmoded cabs and reconditioning gas stations to capture harmful chemicals.     Beijing aims to have 70 percent of the days up to standard this ear, which meant there should be at least 256 blue sky days.     It has been working to reduce pollution and improve the air quality to ensure a "Green Olympics."     For example, the municipal government cut public transport fares in an attempt to lure local residents out of their private cars, which could cut auto emissions. The city also converted 18,000 outdated coal-fired boilers and installed electrical heaters in 20,000 detached houses, replacing coal-heated devices.     Beijing is also considering traffic controls during the Olympics, in which drivers with even- and odd-numbered license plates, except taxis, buses and emergency vehicles, would only be able to drive on alternate days. Offenders would be fined.     During a test of this proposal conducted from Aug. 17-20, about1.3 million cars were taken off the city roads each day and the amount of pollutants discharged was cut by 5,815.2 tons, according o a report by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection.

FUZHOU, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Fung Wong, the eighth tropical storm to hit China's coast this year, made landfall in the southeastern Fujian Province on Monday, according to the provincial observatory.     The eye of the powerful typhoon landed at Donghan Town of Fuqing City at 10 p.m. with winds of up to 119 km per hour. Typhoon Fung Wong, which was lashing Taiwan on Monday morning, continued to strengthen as it headed toward the southeastern coast of mainland China, according to the observatory of Fujian Province. "Heavy rains and winds are expected after the eye leaves the town," an official with the flood control office of Fuqing City said.     Before the typhoon landed, Fuqing had seen torrential rain with 205 millimeters falling from midnight to 8 p.m. on Monday.     In Puxia County, the power was cut off as 15 electricity transmission lines and 498 transformer stations were damaged. But no casualties were reported.     The typhoon is also likely to bring more heavy rains and strong winds in coastal areas of the province early on Tuesday. BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China is ready to work together with the United States to forge ahead bilateral relations of constructive cooperation along the right track and in a sustained, healthy and stable manner, President Hu Jintao said here on Sunday.During a meeting with his U.S. counterpart George W. We will keep contact with the U.S. side and inform you of the new developments," said the Chinese president.    Bush thanked China for how it has handled the situation of Todd Bachman and his family, and also thanked Hu for his expression of sympathy.    Todd and Barbara Bachman of Lakeville, Minneapolis, were attacked by a man with a knife while touring the 13th-century Drum Tower of Beijing on Saturday. Todd Bachman died from knife wounds while his wife suffered multiple stab wounds and was in critical but stable condition after an eight-hour surgery.    Police said that the assailant, 47-year-old Tang Yongming from Hangzhou of east China's Zhejiang Province, later killed himself by jumping off a 130-foot high balcony on the Drum Tower.    During the Sunday meeting, the two presidents also exchanged views on other issues, including the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and the Iran nuclear issue.    They agreed that the two sides should maintain communication and coordination, and make joint efforts to facilitate the proper settlement of these issues.    Both leaders also made a positive evaluation of the progress achieved through the strategic and economic dialogue between the two countries, and agreed to work together to help the dialogue achieve more positive results.
