WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-elect Joe Biden is nominating the education commissioner in Connecticut to serve as secretary of the Department of Education. After initial reports, Biden confirmed Tuesday that he would like Miguel Cardona to take over the role that Secretary Betsy DeVos has held since President Donald Trump took office in 2017.Watch Biden introduce Cardona below:Cardona has served as his state’s commissioner of education since August 2019. Before that, he served as assistant superintendent for teaching and learning in Meriden, according to Connecticut State Colleges and Universities. The 45-year-old began his career as an elementary school teacher and served as a school principal for 10 years. He also taught for four years as an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut in the Department of Educational Leadership.Cardona is a low-profile candidate who The Washington Post says has pushed to reopen schools and hasn’t been aligned with any particular side in recent education policy battles. When schools moved to remote learning this year, The Associated Press reports Cardona hurried to deliver more than 100,000 laptops to students across The Constitution State. In his announcement, Biden said Cardona will lead the administration’s efforts to invest in all students, support educators, and make reopening schools safely a national priority. They hope to safely reopen the majority of classrooms within the first 100 days of Biden’s term.Biden says Cardona will strive to eliminate long-standing inequities and close racial and socioeconomic opportunity gaps — as well as expand access to community colleges, training and public four-year colleges and universities to improve student success and grow a stronger middle class.Cardona’s parents are from Puerto Rico. If confirmed by the Senate, he would be another diverse member of the administration’s Cabinet, which Biden has promised will be the most diverse in U.S. history.Biden issued this statement about Cardona: 2012

We're giving you one good excuse to sleep an extra hour this weekend!Daylight Saving Time is ending, and that means you'll be turning the clocks back as you hit the hay Saturday. The idea of changing the clocks twice a year first came about to provide more daylight during the evening hours in the spring and summer and was later implemented as a way to try and conserve energy.Since then, studies have gone back and forth as to whether any more or less energy is used.Daylight Saving Time happens Sunday, Nov. 4. 535

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump announced Monday that his administration is distributing 150 million Abbott rapid point-of-care tests in the coming weeks.Trump said 50 million tests will go to the nation’s most vulnerable communities, including 18 million for nursing homes, 15 million for assisted living facilities, 10 million for home health and hospice care agencies, and nearly 1 million for historically Black colleges and tribal nation colleges. The president said 100 million tests will be given to states and territories to support their efforts to reopen their economies and schools.“For example, the support my administration is providing would allow every state to, on a regular basis, test every teacher who needs it,” said Trump. “This continues our critical effort to use testing to protect high-risk communities.”Trump said the new Abbott rapid point-of-care tests are easy to use and return results in minutes. He said you can get a result in a maximum 15 minutes and no machine is needed to process them. After the president’s testing announcement, Admiral Brett Giroir spoke and actually demonstrated how the tests work.Giroir explained that the Abbott uses a nasal swab. To administer the test, the admiral said you put six drops of liquid on a piece of paper, swab the nostrils five times each, insert the swab into the test, twist three times, pull a piece of adhesive off and wait for the results.Giroir said it’s not a home test but can be administered in places like schools, churches or parking lots.As of Monday, Giroir said the U.S. had performed over 111 million tests for the novel coronavirus and the nation averages about 920,000 tests per day. He said the new tests will help increase the nation’s testing capabilities. The briefing comes a day before Trump is set to take on former Vice President Joe Biden in the first presidential debate of the 2020 election. One of the announced topics is the COVID-19 pandemic, which Biden has accused Trump of failing to adequately address. As of Monday afternoon, the COVID-19 death toll was near 205,000, with at least 7.1 million cases confirmed in the nation, according to Johns Hopkins University. Worldwide, the death toll is nearing 1 million. The press conference also came after a bombshell report from The New York Times, in which the publication says it has obtained more than two decades worth of Trump’s tax information. The documents reportedly revealed Trump paid just 0 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017. In 10 of the 15 years before that, he paid no income taxes at all, The Times reports.Trump did not take questions after Monday's press conference, so he didn't comment on the tax report, but he has called the reporting "fake news" in other places. 2763

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Deborah Birx is warning Americans who traveled for Thanksgiving and attended a large gathering that they should assume they were infected with the coronavirus. The coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force is advising those who gathered with numerous loved ones for the holiday to get tested in next few days.“If your family traveled, you have to assume that you are exposed and you became infected and you really need to get tested in the next week and you need to avoid anyone in your family with comorbidities or (who is) over 65,” Birx told “Face the Nation” on Sunday.Birx also says the task force is even asking families to mask indoors if they chose to gather during Thanksgiving and others went across the country or even into the next state.“And if you're over 65 or you have comorbidities and you gathered at Thanksgiving, if you develop any symptoms, you need to be tested immediately because we know that our therapeutics work best, both our antivirals and our monoclonal antibodies, work best very early in disease,” said Birx.During her interview, Birx referred to the current spike in COVID-19 cases as the nation’s “third wave” and compared it to second wave we saw over the summer.“We saw what happened post Memorial Day,” said Birx. “Now we are deeply worried about what could happen post-Thanksgiving because the number of cases, 25,000 versus 180,000 a day, that's why we are deeply concerned.”Birx says she’s worried about how last week’s holiday gatherings may increase the case count even more, especially in states with fewer COVID-19 restrictions. If you live in one of those states, she says you should take it upon yourself to be restrictive.Watch Birx's "Face the Nation" interview below:In step with Birx, Fauci provided similar warnings during an appearance on “Meet the Press” on Sunday. He said the heavy holiday travel could make the current surge in COVID-19 cases even worse as we head into the winter months."What we expect, unfortunately, as we go for the next couple of weeks into December is that we might see a surge superimposed on the surge we are already in," said Fauci.Unless something changes dramatically, Fauci predicts health officials will advise against travel for the end of the year holidays and New Year’s Eve, like they did for Thanksgiving.“We’re going to have to make decisions as a nation, state, city and family, that we’re in a very difficult time and we’re going to have to do the kinds of restrictions of things we would have liked to have done, particularly in this holiday season. Because we’re entering into what’s really a precarious situation, because we’re in the middle of a steep slope.”Watch Fauci's "Meet the Press" interview below: 2746

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told lawmakers Wednesday that face masks are “the most important, powerful public health tool we have” against the coronavirus and they might even provide better protection than a vaccine. The CDC director, Dr. Robert Redfield, made the comments during a hearing before the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies.“I will continue to appeal for all Americans, all individuals in our country, to embrace these face coverings,” said Redfield. “I’ve said it, if we did it for 6, 8, 10, 12 weeks, we’d bring this pandemic under control.”Redfield said there’s clear scientific evidence that face coverings work and they’re our best defense against the virus.“I might even go so far as to say this face mask is more guaranteed to protect me against COVID than when I take a COVID vaccine,” said the CDC director.Redfield was also asked about when a potential COVID-19 vaccine would be available to the general public, for which he answered – late in the second quarter or the third quarter of next year, which would be between June and September 2021.“I think there will be vaccine that will initially be available sometime between November and December, but very limited supply and will have to be prioritized,” said Redfield. “If you’re asking me when it will be generally available to the American public, so we can begin to take advantage of vaccines and get back to our regular life, I think we’re probably looking at late second quarter, third quarter 2021.”Redfield says the first supply of vaccines will likely go to first responders and those most vulnerable to the disease.Later in the day, President Donald Trump held a press briefing, during which he was asked about Redfield’s comments and said that the CDC director may have been confused or made a mistake. He doubled down on saying that a vaccine will be available before Redfield’s timeline.“I think he made a mistake when he said that,” said Trump. “That’s just incorrect information. I called him and he didn’t tell me that and I think he got the message maybe confused, maybe it was stated incorrectly. No, we’re ready to go immediately as the vaccine is announced and it could be announced in October, could be announced a little bit after October, but once we go, we’re ready.”On Twitter, Redfield went on to clarify the statements he made in the hearing, saying he 100% believes in the importance of vaccines, especially the COVID-19 vaccine.“A COVID-19 vaccine is the thing that will get Americans back to normal everyday life,” he wrote. “The best defense we currently have against this virus are the important mitigation efforts of wearing a mask, washing your hands, social distancing and being careful about crowds.”Click here to learn more from the CDC about how to protect yourself and others from the coronavirus, which has killed more than 197,100 people across the nation, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. 3053
