SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – As more people are being hospitalized with COVID-19 across Southern California, some health care systems worry that lack of hospital staffing could become a big issue.“We’ve got to take care of our health care workers, or we’re not going to have them to take care of the patients,” said Meghan Jaremczuk, a registered nurse and the Director of Progressive and Acute Care at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.Like many health care workers this year, Jaremczuk hasn’t had a break. She’s been taking care of COVID-19 patients throughout the pandemic.“Other people have been working from home, we're not, we're here, we're in it,” she said. “It’s been hard because this has been going on for a long time and people are tired, but they're still showing up. You're seeing people that can't be with their loved ones, visitors are very, very restricted. They can Facetime with their families and things like that, but it’s not the same.”The County of San Diego reported an additional 15 deaths related to COVID-19 on Wednesday and a 62 percent increase in the number of COVID-19 hospitalized patients in a two week period.The Federal Medical Station set up at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido has 202 beds for non-ICU patients ready to go when needed, according to Palomar Health CEO Diane Hansen.Hansen said the health care system has the ability to expand the dedicated 48 ICU beds to 110 ICU beds if needed, but said making sure enough health care workers are available is one of the bigger issues at this point.“We do have capacity. We're seeing on average about 50 patients per day less than what we normally see this time of year,” said Hansen. “While we have capacity, my biggest concern is our ability to staff beds should the pandemic surge become greater.”“Staffing is a concern because not every nurse can take care of every kind of patient,” said Jaremczuk.Jaremczuk is most worried about the rapid rate of community spread. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating after an inmate died at the George Bailey Detention Facility. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were notified that an inmate identified as 63-year-old Dennis Lee Curry needed medical help inside his cell on May 11. Deputies say when they arrived, Curry complained of pain to his head and chest, but had no visible injuries. Curry was taken to a local hospital where his condition worsened and he was placed on life support before he died on the morning of May 13. Following an autopsy, it was discovered that Curry died of natural causes. The Sheriff’s Department’s homicide unit was called in to investigate, as they do with all in-custody deaths. Curry was in custody for outstanding warrants related to prior DUI and drug-related charges, according to the department. 860

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chula Vista City Councilman Steve Padilla, who last week announced he contracted coronavirus, has been hospitalized at UCSD Medical Center after experiencing difficulty breathing, his family announced Thursday.Ashleigh Padilla, Padilla's daughter, said her father "was admitted to UCSD Thornton Hospital ICU where he is receiving additional treatment, including a respirator to aid with difficulty breathing associated with COVID-19."“I know his amazing doctors and nurses are doing everything they can to send him home healthy when this is all over," said Ashleigh Padilla.No further details about his condition were given at this time, but Padilla did issue a warning to the public through his daughter.“My father asked me to pass on a message: Everyone needs to take COVID-19 seriously. Please follow the advice of our public health professionals to reduce spread of the virus and take precautions to keep your families and our community safe," said Ashleigh Padilla.Padilla, who represents Chula Vista's District 3, made the announcement in video last Saturday that was published on his Facebook page."After recently experiencing symptoms, I was diagnosed as being positive for the COVID-19 virus, also known as the coronavirus," he said last Saturday.Padilla appeared in the video to be in good spirits as he told viewers that he was doing "very well" and "feeling well."In a follow up statement later that night, he described having a fever, body aches, headaches, chills, that "came on very rapidly."
