SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An 87-year-old man was beaten during a home invasion in Clairemont Wednesday afternoon. According to San Diego Police, the incident happened on the 4600 block of Firestone Street at 3:02 p.m. Police say three men forced their way into the 87-year-old man’s home before beating and robbing him. "All of a sudden three guys come plowing through my front door, said 'this is a robbery.' I said, 'Come on ... I got nothing here for you.' Which didn’t dissuade them," said Paul Schmidt. Schmidt told 10News he was working on a ceiling fan with the door open when the men broke in. “I had scissors laying there, he grabbed the scissors and he threatened me with it. He said, 'There’s three of us and one of you, and we’re robbing you.' And what could I do, maybe one or two guys I can handle, but three ..." Schmidt added. Schmidt says he fought back, grabbing one of the robber's beards before one of the men held scissors to his throat. "The guy with the beard, he was the meanest, he seemed to be the lead, but he was higher than a kite," Schmidt said. The robbers were able to get away with Schmidt's wallet as well as his red pickup truck and some smaller items. Police arrested two suspects in the attack on July 25. Both suspects have, as of Monday, been charged with robbery, elder abuse and auto theft.The suspects were identified as John Slobig, 59 and Terry Jones, 53. Police say a third suspect is still outstanding and the victim’s vehicle was returned. 1489

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Seattle hiker arrived in San Diego over the weekend, where he'll begin a 2,600-mile trek to raise awareness and money for Alzheimer's disease.Toby Gallier's family was first impacted by the disease four years ago when his mom's partner was diagnosed. Gallier's seen the toll it takes on both patient and caregiver.Gallier will be hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, a grueling five-month trek that will take him through desert, forest and mountains.He's raising money for "The Longest Day" fundraiser through the Alzheimer's Association - you can donate here.You can also follow along on his journey here, Gallier will be posting blog updates whenever he can find WiFi.On Monday the San Diego/Imperial Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association greeted and thanked Gallier for his commitment to this cause. 827

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An attorney for a man charged with killing a South Bay music producer told a jury that her client took steps to dispose of the 28-year-old’s body out of fear of being accused of the murder, but did not actually carry out the brutal stabbing himself.Both the defense and the prosecution gave closing statements Monday in the high-profile murder trial of 54-year-old Timothy John Cook. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sign advertising a block party at the home of a registered sex offender is causing concern in Rancho Bernardo.“We would like to invite you and your kids to a neighborhood get together” read the sign, which was posted outside a home on Bernardo Oaks Drive in the Seven Oaks retirement neighborhood this week.“I always keep an eye on that house because I know there’s a registered sex offender that lives there,” said Susan Sutherland.Sutherland told 10News she looked up her community on the Megan’s Law website four years ago and found a listing for a neighbor who had had been convicted of lewd acts on a child under 14, according to Sutherland“I come from a background of abuse. I can’t live with myself if I allow a child to get hurt. I can’t live with that,” Sutherland said.The sign was posted by the contractor who recently renovated the home, which is owned by the man's mother. 10News reached out to Elor Energy, which said it had no prior knowledge of the man's past. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A third Marine has reportedly tested positive for coronavirus at MCAS Miramar.The Marine is currently quarantined at his home, MCAS Miramar officials told 10News.Navy medical staff is investigating anyone the Marine may have had contact with, as well.No further information on the base's third case was immediately released.Last week, a Marine tested positive for coronavirus after returning from leave in Washington state where he was visiting family. Then Saturday, the base confirmed a second Marine tested positive for the virus.Those two Marines are currently in isolation and quarantined in an empty barracks that was designated to treat potential cases of COVID-19.MCAS Miramar is currently a quarantine site for individuals evacuated from Wuhan last month and passengers aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship. Those quarantined passengers are being treated by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention staff.The two Marines who had contracted coronavirus last week did not have any contact with cruise passengers, according to the base. MCAS Miramar officials say the base has implemented increased hygiene practices in accordance with the CDC to treat personnel. 1199
