Virginia Beach Police are investigating a shooting that seriously injured two people early Sunday morning.Officers were alerted to multiple shots fired in the area around 12:45 a.m. A woman was located and suffering from a life-threatening wound. Medics treated the woman and took her to the hospital.A few minutes later at 12:48 a.m., officers received word that a victim with life-threatening injuries was located in several blocks away. EMS treated and took the victim to the hospital for further treatment.A possible suspect has been detained and the investigation is ongoing.Prior to this shooting, police responded to another shooting at the 1900 block of the Boardwalk. A woman suffered non-life threatening injuries in the incident.There is an increased police presence throughout the oceanfront area due to College Beach Weekend. Problems with violence in past years have caused some to be critical of the event. Last year, thousands signed a petition calling for an end to College Beach Weekend after four people at the Oceanfront were injured from a shooting. 1078

The company cited "an increasingly challenging media environment.""Today, we had to make the hard decision to say goodbye to esteemed colleagues," the company said in a statement. "An incredible team remains, and our mission is as relevant now as ever."Editor-in-chief Liz Heron wrote on Twitter that her "entire team" was laid off and she resigned. Senior staff writer Parker Molloy also confirmed her exit on Twitter. Eli Pariser, Upworthy's cofounder and co-CEO, stepped down last week. "I remain very grateful to all the smart, good-hearted people that helped to build something we all believed in," he wrote on Twitter.Upworthy skyrockted to viral fame in 2013 because of its catchy headlines and innovative mastery of Facebook's algorithm. (KGTV) - A local couple is defending themselves after having their claims questioned following the release of new surveillance video showing a man allegedly trying to snatch a toddler from their car in a Vista Costco parking lot last weekend.The surveillance video released Thursday night shows 37-year-old Adam Glavinic walking up to the driver's side of the parent’s white SUV. The SUV begins slowly backing out of the stall, and that is when Glavinic reaches for the rear passenger door handle. Glavinic is shown opening the door then quickly shutting it and stepping away as a woman gets out the driver’s seat to confront him. Glavinic doesn't appear to reach inside to grab the boy who was in the backseat, according to his parents.“There's way more to this story that people don't know,” said mother Jennifer Lawson on Friday. She said that she and her fiancé are taking heat from the public after describing the encounter differently from what the video reveals. “We didn't lie. We were told that from everybody who was seeing the incident that he did touch our kid. He did reach his hand in the car. So, that's what we went off of. I didn't see [it] because I jumped out of the car as soon as I saw that guy open up the door,” she told ABC10 News.Earlier this week before the video came out, the couple said the man tried to pull their boy out of his car seat.Glavinic was arrested for attempted kidnapping and being under the influence.In response to community outrage over Glavinic posting bail and getting out of jail the next day, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department published the video in hopes of alleviating concern.The sheriff's office said that, based on the video and other evidence, "the Vista Sheriff's Station believes there is no ongoing threat or danger to our community's children related to this incident."When asked if Glavinic should still be charged, Lawson replied, “I'm not sure. I don't know his intentions. I didn’t know if he was going to kidnap my kid or hurt him. All I know is that it was terrifying and I was scared for my kid's life, safety [and] everything.”The case has been referred to the DA's Office, which is reviewing it. WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health officials warned parents Wednesday about the dangers of teething remedies that contain a popular numbing ingredient and asked manufacturers to stop selling their products intended for babies and toddlers.The Food and Drug Administration said that various gels and creams containing the drug benzocaine can cause rare but deadly side effects in children, especially those 2 years and younger.The agency has been warning about the products for a decade but said reports of illnesses and deaths have continued. Now, it wants teething products off the market, noting there is little evidence they actually work."We urge parents, caregivers and retailers who sell them to heed our warnings and not use over-the-counter products containing benzocaine for teething pain," said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, in a statement.One major manufacturer, Church and Dwight Co. Inc., said Wednesday it would discontinue its four Orajel teething brands, including Baby Orajel and Orajel Medicated Teething Swabs.The FDA said it will take legal action against other companies that don't voluntarily comply as soon as possible.Benzocaine is also used in popular over-the-counter products for toothaches and cold sores in adults, including Orajel and Anbesol and generic drugstore brands. Products for adults can remain on the market but the FDA wants companies to add new warnings. Church and Dwight will continue to sell its other Orajel products, the company said in a statement.Benzocaine can cause a rare blood condition linked to potentially deadly breathing problems. The pain-relieving ingredient can interfere with an oxygen-carrying protein in the blood. Symptoms include shortness of breath, headache and rapid heart rate.The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend teething creams because they usually wash out of the baby's mouth within minutes. Instead, the group recommends giving babies teething rings or simply massaging their gums to relieve pain.The FDA issued warnings about the teething products in 2006, 2011 and 2014, but it did not call for their removal from the market. Officials reviewed 119 cases of the blood disorder linked to benzocaine between 2009 and 2017, including four deaths, according to the FDA.Wednesday's action comes more than four years after the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen petitioned the FDA to stop sales of teething products. The agency faced a deadline next week after Public Citizen sued the FDA to force a response to the petition. 2526
