SAN DIEGO — San Diego County is falling into the state’s most restrictive tier of Coronavirus restrictions, just as holiday shopping season kicks off.Under the purple tier, retailers are limited to 25 percent capacity in their stores, down from 50 percent that they had been operating under.Ariel Hujar, who owns the Whiskey and Leather boutique at One Paseo, stocked up on all sorts of gifts for the holidays, including books, cocktail shakers and card games.“We prepare, we buy extra so if we don't sell it during this time it's really hard on us,” she said. The new tier is the latest turn in a topsy turvy year that has seen retailers go from curbside pickup only to 50 percent in store capacity, cut to 25 percent. The new tier takes effect at midnight Saturday "It doesn't help me to be angry about the loss of business," said Nancy Warwick, owner of Warwick's bookstore in La Jolla. "What we can do is just do our best right now and hope that customers still support us."At Grossmont Center's Prevue Formal and Bridal, General Manager Caitlin Todd said walk-ins could soon have to be turned away. While bridal sales are up, sales of prom dresses are down 90 percent.“It's been kind of just hanging on tight and figuring it out day by day,” Todd said. “We do have to create a new way of setting up our store, but that's just what everyone's used to doing now - changing everything."Miro Copic, a marketing professor at San Diego State University, said social media marketing and offering discounts of even 5 to 10 percent could make the difference.“For some of these retailers it will be a decision between life and death, of, will their business go forward, and are they willing to break even to ensure that they continue, versus trying to make sure they eke out a profit,” he said. The state says jobs in the county's general merchandise retail stores are down about 12 percent from a year ago. 1908

SAN DIEGO — A former San Diego doctor who was caught watching child porn at work will have his license reinstated. The news of the reinstatement became available this week, in documents provided by the California Medical Board.Former psychiatrist Mark Zweifach went in front of the board three weeks ago for a hearing on reinstating his license. A video of the hearing recently became available to the public. For the first time on-camera, Zweifach describes his own shocking acts that still haunt him.LONGFORM: Former San Diego Kaiser doctor caught watching child porn at work tries to get his license back“Eleven years ago, on three occasions, I briefly viewed child pornography at my workplace,” he said.It was more than a decade ago that the admitted sex addict turned in his white coat, but the District Attorney's office didn't have enough evidence to bring criminal charges.California Medical Board paperwork reveals that the alarming discovery was made at a Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in El Cajon. Some of the paperwork reads, "While at work, on his Kaiser-issued computer, [he] viewed inappropriate images, including child pornography."“I didn't collect it. I didn't produce it. I didn't distribute it, but I viewed it,” he told the board during his recent hearing.Since then, Zweifach’s become an active part of the San Diego community, according to his online resumes. A 2014 La Jolla Light website article about a local puppet guild shows a photo of Zweifach as a puppeteer operating a large, red puppet. As of late July, he was listed as a board member of the San Diego Puppetry Guild’s website. The day after the guild was contacted by reporters, his name was removed.Documents outline his road to rehabilitation, like a 12-step “Sexaholics Anonymous” program and “regular therapy.”During his recent hearing, he describes having confronted whatever happened to him as a kid that apparently made him vulnerable to addiction.“I did have a history of being exposed to childhood sexual experiences that profoundly affected me,” he explains.Zweifach also told the board that he’s had two relapses with viewing adult pornography, but it stopped there.“I thank God that in the last eleven years, I’ve been entirely free of viewing the underage images that led to the loss of my license,” he adds.Zweifach has expressed a great deal of remorse for his actions. His license will officially be reinstated on Sept. 14.Zweifach will be on five years of probation which includes a number of stipulations, including not treating minors. He must also undergo continued psychotherapy. 2612

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Joc Pederson's second home run of the game sailed an estimated 435 feet through two palm trees just beyond the center field fence at Petco Park, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 7-6 to take two of three in an early series between NL West rivals.Pederson drove in five runs on the two homers for the seven-time defending division champion Dodgers, who won seven of nine on a three-city trip.Pederson hit a two-run homer off Garrett Richards in the second inning and then welcomed rookie Luis Pati?o to the big leagues with his monster three-run shot in the sixth.Down 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Fernando Tatis Jr. blasted a deep two-run homer to trim the LA lead to 7-4.In the eighth, San Diego added another run on Wil Myers’ fourth home run of the year. The Padres picked up a run off Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen in the bottom of the ninth to close the gap to 7-6, and with runners at the corners and one out, Manny Machado had a chance to tie or win the game. The third baseman hit a fly ball to left that was caught by Chris Taylor for the second out, and the left fielder’s throw to the plate was perfect to nail a tagging Trent Grisham for the final out of the game. 1222

SAN DIEGO (AP and KGTV) -- Washing Senators are remembering John McCain's momentous vote against a Republican effort to repeal the Obama-era health law. Of those remembering McCain is Sen Susan Collins, who told CNN's "State of the Union" that she and GOP colleague Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — both repeal opponents — spoke to McCain before the July 2017 vote because they knew he was struggling with the decision.Collins says he pointed to them and simply said, "You two are right!"Vice President Mike Pence was waiting to speak with McCain next, Collins says, but she knew McCain's "no" decision would stick. Collins said, "Once John McCain made up his mind about something, there was no shaking him."McCain would later famously hold up his hand and vote no, ending the measure. Following the vote, audible gasps could be heard throughout the room, as well as applause. The 81-year-old Arizona Republican died Saturday of brain cancer.Watch the moment McCain voted no in the player below:  1023
