SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities in California have identified the sailor who died after being struck by a spinning helicopter blade as 32-year-old Lt. James Mazzuchelli.Mazzuchelli was a flight surgeon assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267, Marine Aircraft Group 39 and was stationed at MCAS Camp Pendleton.Mazzuchelli is from Orange Park, Florida and was previously deployed to Japan.“Lt. James Mazzuchelli was an incredibly talented physician and Sailor,” said Col. Matthew Mowery, commanding officer of MAG-39. “His contagious enthusiasm, motivation, and love for the Marines and Sailors of HMLA-267 and MAG-39 has been evident in the outpouring of grief at his loss and the support being shown to his family and close friends. His willingness to join the Navy and elect to serve faithfully with the Marines should give a sense of pride to all of us who serve our country that we are surrounded by heroes every day. James and his contribution to our Corps will be sorely missed."The sailor died Saturday morning after being hit by the spinning tail rotor blade of a UH-01Y Venom Marine helicopter.The incident is currently under investigation. 1182

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As COVID-19 cases continue to surge across California, many San Diego County businesses are struggling with the latest restrictions. Richard Bailey, mayor of Coronado, is now asking California Gov. Gavin Newsom to reconsider the latest stay-at-home order.Bailey called the order inconsistent, arbitrary, and ineffective."Shutting down businesses that are not contributing to the spread of COVID will not reduce the number of cases, will not reduce the number of hospitalizations, but it will put tens of thousands of people out of work," said Bailey.Restaurants can no longer offer outdoor dining and playgrounds are closed. Personal care services, hair salons, and barbershops are just some businesses that have to shut down for three weeks. Bailey said while COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations rising should be taken seriously, some of these closures don't make sense."We should all have a really firm understanding of what our risk level is based on our own demographics and our own underlying conditions. There's no data to support that outdoor dining is a significant risk for transmission," Bailey said.In the letter sent to Newsom on Monday, Bailey asked for a reconsideration of the latest health order based on data specific to San Diego County and a new public health strategy."We should treat citizens like adults and put in place recommendations that really emphasize all the best practices that will slow the spread," he said.Dr. Mark Ghaly, the state's Health and Human Services Secretary, explained Tuesday that only 10 percent of ICU capacity is currently available in the Southern California region, which San Diego County falls into."The transmission is now so widespread across our state that most all nonessential activities create a serious risk for transmission," said Ghaly.He said part of the regional stay-at-home order is based on our experiences with flattening the curve earlier this year and the success of other countries that implemented similar shutdowns."Belgium, when they imposed a nationwide closure, the positivity rate in just three weeks fell from 21 percent to 8 percent," said Ghaly.Bailey said there should be a better plan to slow the spread without causing significant harm to small businesses along the way."They're picking winners and losers, and unfortunately big businesses are the winners, and small businesses that can barely afford it are becoming the losers," said Bailey.In the meantime, Bailey is encouraging business owners to follow the state orders, so places like salons and restaurants don't lose state licensing."We're really just trying to help businesses be compliant to the state order," he said.Newsom has yet to respond to Bailey's letter. 2733

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Basic needs can be challenging to meet for homeless families or those living in shelters. As schools resume for students, distance learning can be even harder. Father Joes Villages is helping homeless students thrive this school year."We work with a population that is customarily at a disadvantage and has greater challenges, especially during these times of the pandemic," says Deacon Jim Vargas.It's been a challenge for the kids who aren't able to go to school. "In a sense, distance learning has isolated them even more," says Jennifer Ryan with the Therapeutic Children's Center at Father Joe's Villages."They don't have the financial resources, technological resources, other resources like those families that have homes," adds Vargas.The Therapeutic Children's Center provides a space for students to do their work."We have about 100 children that are in school. That's kindergarten all the way to 17-year-olds," says Ryan.Laptops and tablets are usually given to students by their schools. Father Joe's Villages makes sure they have access to the internet, school supplies, and more.Deacon Vargas says without the right intervention, these students are likely to repeat a grade or worse. "We know statistically that they are four times more likely to be homeless in adulthood."Father Joe's Villages has launched a new distance learning initiative to continue to provide resources to students. 1430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Anxiety is growing along La Jolla Boulevard after months of drive-by vandals shattering the windows of businesses, homes and cars."It's a little terrifying, random, and I don't know when it's going to happen," said David Heine.Heine owns Beaumont's Eatery. Last Saturday, just before 7 p.m., a customer parked a car across the street."Just crossed the street onto the sidewalk, when we heard the smash. Their car window shattered. At the same time, rocks came through our awning," said Heine.Heine says the rocks tore through the vinyl awning and struck his hostess, who wasn't injured."The rocks bounced past kids on the patio. It's a dangerous situation," said Heine.It's a danger that isn't going away. The incident is the latest of five similar incidents here in the past few months. Along a mile-and-a-half stretch of La Jolla Blvd., a similar story has been unfolding: Kitchen and car windows shattered, along with windows of other businesses like the Baskin-Robbins.Megan Murphy, co-owner of Verdes El Ranchero restaurant, just finished replacing her second rock shattered window. But this Saturday night, a clue emerged from her new cameras. In the video, a dark sedan pauses to let two people cross the street, before a person wearing red leans out of the window and appears to toss something out. At the same time, rocks appear on the ground near the pedestrians. The rocks recovered have been about an inch long, but they've been thrown with velocity. A handful of people have been hit, but there have been no serious injuries."One of these times someone is going to get seriously hurt, and it's not okay ... not kids being kids. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dawn Hendon knows a thing or two when it comes to the big day for couples, she was a wedding planner then became an officiant over the past 10 years."It's a happy business, I like to be around people for joyous occasions and weddings are always a happy event so I thought this is a happy thing, and today we need all the joy we can find," Hendon said.Recently, she's added a backyard chapel at her San Marcos home to her list of services. "I even have shoes, accessories, floral head pieces, boutonnieres for guys and tuxedos for men."Love Wedding Chapel is what she calls it and she was able to pull it off thanks to help with a grant from the San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce. At a time she said when people are supporting more black owned businesses amid the fight for racial injustice, "I’m glad people are looking to support black owned businesses. Sometimes we have a lot more challenges, our population isn’t so big in San Diego." And in the middle of a global pandemic, Hendon said, "I’ve lost family members with COVID this year and I thought finding our joy is important so it brings me joy, and I hope to bring joy to others."She said there was no better time than now to create the business of her dreams, "I thought if we could bring a little bit of that dream to them and bring them a nice environment then it’d make their day a little special."She received her Masters in Business Administration last year and said everything she's learned and accomplished has helped make this business happen.
