(KGTV) - An art gallery in Solana Beach is taking drastic measures to try and survive the coronavirus pandemic.Exclusive Collections is holding it's first ever sale on fine art, offering paintings and more for as much as 50% off."You know art doesn't really go on sale," says owner Ruth-Ann Thorn. "But here we are in this time where you have to do what you have to do to keep the doors open."Thorn has been collecting art for 25 years, often buying pieces from artists who hold shows in her gallery. While her shop was closed during the Pademic, she made the difficult decision to go through her warehouse and see what she could sell."I got very emotional, and I almost broke down," Thorn says. "We needed to make some very serious decisions on how we're going to keep the doors open. And it requires a sacrifice to let go of these things."Thorn says her sale offers even non-collectors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase an investment piece. She's hopeful she'll sell enough to make ends meet until business picks back up."If you've never bought art before you're gonna get you know the deal of a century," she says.Exclusive Collections gallery is open from noon to 5 pm every day. Several firefighters were able to save an American flag while working to put out the flames of the Lake Fire in California late Wednesday night.The Los Angeles County Firefighters Local 1014 union, which posted the dramatic video, showed crews pulling the flag down off a pole as flames raged around them. 313
Starbucks has reached gender and race pay equity among all US employees in similar roles, the company said on Wednesday."This milestone is the result of years of work and commitment," said Lucy Helm, executive vice president and chief partner officer at Starbucks, in a statement."We've worked hard for a couple of years now to ensure we can get there," Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson told CNN's Maggie Lake on Wednesday.The coffee company added that it will now tell American job candidates the pay range for any position in an effort to increase transparency.Helm explained that the company has been striving for pay equity for about decade. Last year, it was at 99.7% parity. Women make up about one-third of the company's executive team.Starbucks uses several tools to make sure bias doesn't impact how much employees make. The company regularly checks for compensation gaps among employees, and uses a calculator to determine starting pay rate targets based on experience. It doesn't ask job candidates about their salary history, and the company analyzes raises to make sure they're fair.It is working with women's organizations like Billie Jean King's Leadership Initiative and the National Partnership for Women & Families to help guide its efforts."One of the most important things to get right is starting pay," said Sara Bowen, the leader of the Starbucks Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility team.Research shows that women, on average, earn around 80 cents for every dollar a man makes. The gap is even wider for women of color."If a job candidate comes to Starbucks making 70 or 80 cents on the dollar, and we use that as the basis for her pay at Starbucks, we simply import gender inequality into our own system," she said. "Prior salary can be tainted and should not dictate how we pay."Johnson told Lake that the pay parity achievement is "another example of us taking care of our [employees]."The company also made a commitment to reach gender pay parity at all of its company-owned locations around the world.A number of companies are starting to pay attention to gender wage gaps among their own employees.In a recent survey of human resources executives from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement service firm, 48% of companies say they're reviewing their pay policies with an eye toward closing the compensation gap between male and female employees.Others are making changes already.After disclosing small differences in employee pay earlier this year, Citigroup announced it will give raises to even salaries between men, women and minority employees. Staff at the Emergency Communications Center in Nashville confirmed they have been reviewing the call-taking and dispatching processes involved in the deadly Waffle House mass shooting.Those details from the review of the shooting on April 22 that killed four people will be used to assist in ongoing training for their personnel and to ensure professionalism.In this shooting, 911 officials said dispatchers did not know where on Murfreesboro Pike the shooting was taking place when the first calls came in.The shooting lasted 42 seconds from the time of the first shot outside until the gunman fled from the scene. Reports from the 911 center stated the shooter was inside the restaurant for 27 seconds.A timeline was released of some of the multiple calls separate operators answered at the ECC when the shooting took place. 850
SPRING VALLEY (KGTV): People who live in the East County say they're fed up with the growing homeless problem around Spring Valley County Park.They say it's gotten worse over the last few months, and many parents are now afraid to bring their children there."They yell and scream, and they’re fighting each other," says Gustavo Galvez. His son, Gustavo, Jr. goes to the preschool at the park. "It’s concerning to have your kids listen to that kind of stuff."The county admits the problem has gotten worse. In a statement to 10News, they outlined steps the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Health and Human Services is taking to solve it.Those include:- Coordinating outreach events to give the homeless assistance and resources.- Increasing lighting around the park, especially near the restrooms.- Increased cleaning of common areas around the parkThe county also says that the Sheriff's Department has stepped up their patrols in the area. There is a Sheriff's Substation across the street, which helps keep and eye on the park.Some parents, though, say it's not enough."I feel bad. I know they need to be somewhere. But I don't think they should be where children are," says Lisa Brown, who brings a group of kids from her daycare to the park. "It's a playground.
