In the shadow of the Capitol dome Tuesday was a sobering display of thousands of pairs of shoes, organized neatly across the grass said to represent children who have died in the US from gunshot wounds since the Newtown elementary school massacre in 2012.The global advocacy group Avaaz has been collecting donated pairs of shoes for two weeks and early Tuesday morning lined them up one by one, 18 inches apart, in roughly 80 rows on the Capitol lawn, as Congress continues to sort through a debate over gun violence and school safety."Shoes are individual. They're so personal. There are ballet slippers here and roller skates. These are kids," said Nell Greenberg, the campaign director for Avaaz.The display feature 7,000 pairs of shoes. To arrive at that figure, the group cited a 2017 report from the American Academy of Pediatrics using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that found nearly 1,300 children die from gunshot wounds in the US every year. Avaaz then tallied up the estimated number since the December 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.Organizers say shoes were donated from across the country and stored in a Washington, DC, warehouse until Tuesday. Among those who donated were family members who've lost loved ones to gun violence, such as Tom Mauser, who lost his son in the Columbine school shooting and traveled from Colorado to hand deliver his son's shoes for the display."My son wore the same size shoes as me. I discovered that after he died and that became a big symbol for me, that I could walk in his shoes," said Mauser, who has since become an advocate for stricter gun control.Mauser came to Washington with two pairs of his son's size 10.5 shoes. He placed one pair in the display and wore the other pair -- some gray and black Vans that Daniel was wearing the day he was killed. "That's usually what I wear," Tom Mauser said.Shoes from celebrities like actress Bette Midler and comedian Chelsea Handler were also seen on the grass.The display comes nearly one month after a gunman killed 17 people at a Parkland, Florida, high school, triggering a vocal movement led by student activists demanding more gun control and school safety.The House of Representatives votes Wednesday on a bill to increase security at school, and while it's expected to pass, many Democrats are upset the package doesn't include gun control measures. Also on the Capitol lawn Tuesday, six senators gathered for a news conference to support the Senate version of the House bill, also known as the STOP School Violence Act. The Senate version does not contain gun measures."This is about schools but it's not just about schools," Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, who is a co-sponsor of the Senate bill, told reporters. "When someone is determined that they're going to commit an act of violence, it could be in a school, it could be in a mall, it could be in a movie theater, it could be in an airport, it could be at a stadium. So, what we're really focused on here more than anything else is identifying the people that are going to commit a violent act irrespective of where they're going to commit it and stopping them before they do it."The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing Wednesday on the Parkland shooting and failures by FBI and law enforcement to recognize warning signs exhibited by the gunman before the massacre. The hearing is also expected to focus on a spate of recent gun control legislation that's been introduced by members on both sides of the aisle.Gabrielle Weiss, a 24-year-old volunteer who helped lay out the shoes Tuesday morning, said she wanted to help keep the issue of gun violence alive in the news cycle after seeing it fade after past shootings."I was happy that we were doing this a while after (the Florida shooting) just to keep beating the drum," said Weiss. INDIANAPOLIS — A new book you're sure to want to add to your collection is coming out next spring — staring none other than the Bunny of the United States (BOTUS). The second family's bunny, Marlon Bundo, is the focus of the book written by VP Mike Pence's middle child, Charlotte, and illustrated by her mother, Karen Pence. The announcement was made on the "Marlon Bundo" official Instagram account (@marlonbundo) Friday afternoon. "In the book, I follow Grampa around all day, as a BOTUS should, while he goes about his duties as Vice President," the announcement says. The book is set to be released March 19, 2018.  A portion of the proceeds from the book will go to charity.  749

Incredible video captured by researchers at Florida Atlantic University captured the blacktip shark's annual migration off Florida’s southeast coast.FAU researchers refer to the blacktip shark's as the "snowbirds of the sea". The sharks migrate south during the cold months and head up north when the weather, and water, start to warm back up. They leave the north when water temperatures drop below 71 degrees Fahrenheit and start heading south.The video was taken by FAU researchers on February 27, right off MacArthur Park in Singer Island.“Last year, we saw a dramatic decline in the number of blacktip sharks that migrated south. In fact, it was so low that we estimated the population to be about one-third of what we have seen in previous years,” said Kajiura, a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and director of the Elasmobranch Research Laboratory in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. “We want to make sure that these snowbirds come back to South Florida, because if they don’t, it will have a huge ecological impact in this region.”  According to researchers, this year's video off of  MacArthur Park in Singer Island shows dramatically fewer blacktip sharks during migration season as compared to video footage from previous years.       Mary Stringini is a Digital Reporter for ABC Action News. It was just a few days before Thanksgiving, when an 8th grader was shot and killed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.Sandra Parks was sitting in her room watching TV, when a stray bullet came through the window.“She said, ‘Mama, call the police. I been shot,’” Sandra’s mother, Bernice, describes of that night. “She was laying on the floor. I thought she was playing, but I called the police anyway because I’m like that’s too many gunshots, what the hell is going on?”The 13-year-old’s award-winning essay is now being shared around the world and read on national news outlets. In the young girl’s essay, “Our Truth,” Sandra wrote about gun violence.Sandra’s words are now some of the only things her mom says she has left of her daughter.“I don’t have her flesh. I don’t have her smiling at me all the time. I don’t have what I want, and I want my baby,” Bernice says. “Ain’t nothing gonna make that better. It’s just that being in this house, since she been gone, it’s strange, scary, and it’s unacceptable.”Bernice says her daughter’s words are giving her strength as she prepares for the funeral. The mother hopes Sandra’s essay might prevent another family from going through the same pain.“The stuff that she wrote, people should listen to it. Heed to it. Follow it, because it’s only right that kids should live. Adults should live,” she says. “I don’t think nobody should die, not by the hands of body else for no apparent reason. She didn’t do nothing.”Police have arrested two suspects they believe were connected to the shooting.A public visitation for Sandra will be held Friday. 1596
