SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new social media trend is hoping to help local food places hit hard by this COVID-19 pandemic.Currently, restaurants in the county are only allowed to serve food through take-out, delivery, or drive-thru service. Some restaurants have had to close altogether, not able to afford to keep their doors open. For those businesses trying to stay open, the community is lending its support through #takeoutchallenge.Sports Director Ben Higgins called it the easiest challenge in history. “All you have to do is go order take out from one of your local restaurants,” he said in a video posted to Twitter. Ben ordered food from Buona Forchetta in Encinitas.Others also chimed in on social media.Jason tweeted that he ordered from Mama Kat’s in San Marcos for the first time. On Twitter, Ed gave a shout out to Firehouse Subs in Kearny Mesa and said he ordered twice there this past week. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Montgomery High School student wearing a gorilla costume was hospitalized on Halloween after being hit by a golf cart in Otay Mesa West. According to San Diego Police, the student reportedly cracked an egg on the assistant principal's head before running across the street to a nearby park. Police say staff members at the school chased the student in a golf cart. During the chase, police say there was some sort of fight between the staff members and student before there was “some type of contact” between the student and golf cart. The student was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. Police say they’re investigating the incident as a battery, but it’s unclear whether or not the student or any staff members will be charged.A spokesperson with the Sweetwater Union High School District responded with the following statement: 870

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego family wants to warn other about daytime burglars who may be posing as door-to-door salespeople.The Alvarado family just moved to a home in Allied Gardens. It is a safe neighborhood, but they noticed there are a lot of solicitors.Tuesday afternoon they were burglarized by a couple of young men wearing matching outfits.“I left the house for 25 minutes to pick up my daughters from school," Vanessa Alvarado said. "When I was coming down the street I noticed two young men walking quickly down the street, from my driveway, carrying both my guitars."Her daughters were also in the car as they drove up to their home, and burglars.“They looked up and saw me. They knew who I was,” Alvarado said. "They knew my car and they just sped down the street, made a sharp right turn."One of her daughters noticed the young men’s matching clothes.“I think they looked like salesmen. I noticed one of the had a binder in his hands with several things on top, which turned out to be my personal belongings,” Alvarado said.The home was locked at the time of the burglary.The thieves went into the backyard and broke in through a bedroom window, which was open a few inches but had a stopper device on it aimed to prevent anyone from opening the window further.Regardless, the thieves pried off the screen, and pushed the window open.The men made off with numerous items, including guitars, Kindles and jewelry. They left no fingerprints.“I went from trying to be strong for my daughters to realizing my wedding rings were gone and at that point, my heart just shattered into a million pieces,” Alvarado said.Now, the family is getting security cameras and they have dowels in the windows so they can't be opened.  1744

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego craft brewery hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic is taking the rare step of opening a restaurant, despite the region going into the state's most restrictive purple tier.Dennis O’Connor says the pandemic hurt Thorne Brewing Company the moment the first shut down kicked in back in March.“It wasn't so much that nobody was coming in, but you also lost all those bars and restaurants that were buying your product,” said O’Connor, who co-founded the brewery in 2012.Not to mention, the price of cans increased, hitting the craft brewer’s distribution.Thorne operates three locations in San Diego County, at least one of which will likely have to shut down as the region enters the most restrictive purple tier, outlawing indoor dining. The restrictions take effect midnight Saturday, to help stop the increased spread of the coronavirus. “We are nowhere near thriving,” O’Connor said. “It’s survival at best.”But O’Connor has a new tool for survival.Connected to Thorne’s Barrio Logan location is a new full service distillery and wood-fired pizza restaurant the brewery finished in march, but never opened. O’Connor says it was a multimillion-dollar project that took years.“It was pretty much just a big blank warehouse,” he said.While the interior can't open, Thorne is converting the restaurant’s outdoor patio into its own barbecue eatery, with a bar in the back called Sideyard Barbecue by Hot Mess (the name of the adjacent pizza restaurant) . It'll seat 84 people and opens to the public Nov. 19.“If outdoor is the new norm then let's do an outdoor and let’s kick (butt) on it,” O’Connor said. “Let's not put it in the street, let’s not put it in a barn tent, let's do something special. So that's what this is.”O’Connor said he hopes the barbecue can help get Thorne and its now-limited staff through the pandemic. 1861
