SAN FRANCISCO, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Intel Corp. on Wednesday announced that it will mass-manufacture chips using new transistors featuring a three-dimensional (3-D) structure, calling it a technical breakthrough in microprocessors.The 3-D transistor, called Tri-Gate, represents a fundamental departure from the two-dimensional planar transistor structure that has powered computers, mobile phones and other modern electronics, Intel said."Intel's scientists and engineers have once again reinvented the transistor, this time utilizing the third dimension," Paul Otellini, Intel's chief executive officer, said in a statement.Intel on Wednesday also demonstrated a 22-nanometer (nm) microprocessor, codenamed "Ivy Bridge," which will be the first high-volume chips to use the new 3-D transistors.Ivy Bridge is scheduled for high-volume production readiness by the end of this year, the company said.According to Intel, the 3-D transistors enable chips to operate at lower voltage with lower leakage compared to previous transistors, providing up to 37 percent performance increase at low voltage versus the company's 32nm planar transistors.The gain means that the new 3-D transistors are ideal for use in small handheld devices, which operate using less energy to " switch" back and forth, Intel noted.

SHENYANG, Feb.3, (Xinhua) -- Fire gutted Thursday a five-star hotel in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, and no casualties had been found, local officials said.The fire broke out at 0:13 a.m. at Tower B, an apartment building of the Dynasty Wanxin building complex, and the flames quickly spread to the adjacent Tower A, which is largely a five-star hotel.All the 50-odd people in the hotel were evacuated. No casualties are found.The fire was effectively controlled, Shenyang Municipal Public Security Bureau officials told Xinhua at 4:35 a.m..Police said the fire was triggered by fireworks, which accidentally sparked off the external wall of the buildings. Further investigation into the cause and losses of the fire is still underway.Fire engines, whose water guns could jet water only 50 meters high, were helpless at the fire which flamed on the top of Tower A, 219 meters high.Power supply in the hotel was not cut off, which was said to keep the automatic spray facilities in operation in the building.Personnel from adjacent five-star Sheraton Shenyang Lido Hotel were evacuated, and residents around the Dynasty Wanxin building mainly stayed at home.Top leaders of the province and the city, including Chen Haibo, mayor of Shenyang, arrived at the site soon afterwards to direct efforts to quell the fire.The Dynasty Wanxin building complex, located in the bustling Qingnian Street of Heping District, comprises of three towers. BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Land and Resources announced Thursday illegal buildings totaling 14.31 million square meters in floor space were demolished in an effort to crackdown on illegal use of land by local governments and enterprises.In the crackdown, the ministry also took control of buildings totaling 34.15 million square meters in floor space, and retrieved 43,000 mu of land, 37 percent of which is farm land, said Li Jianqin, an official from the ministry who is charge of enforcing laws and regulations on land use.Li said violations of land-use laws and regulations were widespread, especially those by local governments.According to him, a total of 2,582 people involved in such violations were handed over to judicial and disciplinary authorities in 2010, with 239 people prosecuted for criminal offenses.
