COLLIER COUNTY, Fla — Deputies say a trip to the ice cream store ended with a man getting scooped up by police for DUI.Deputies say 23-year-old Josh Verrot faces several charges, including DUI, battery on a first-responder and fraud. According to a Collier County Sheriff's arrest report, he was arrested Sunday evening outside the Royal Scoop ice cream shop on 8th street in the Vanderbilt Lakes community.Witnesses say that Verrot was driving recklessly in a car with two flat front tires when he pulled into the ice cream shop parking lot and went inside.  As he came out with ice cream, he heard approaching sirens and fled on foot.Deputies located him behind the store and say he refused to do sobriety tests. On the way to the hospital he reportedly bit a firefighter's finger, repeatedly spit toward authorities and yelled “blah-blah-blah” while authorities communicated with him.He also provided his brother's name when asked to identify himself.He's due in court at the end of the month. 1024

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - It's art with a message, and the purposeful signs can be found throughout Middle Tennessee.The word "vote" is written on each of Paul Collins' artistic animal signs. The art pieces range in shapes sizes and species. Some are even hidden from plain sight while others can't be missed.It's become quite the scavenger hunt for some on the lookout for these signs."I look around and place them by bus stops," Collins said. "I look for the corners that have 'vote for me' signs because that’s fair game."Collins, an Austin Peay State University art professor, started the project 100 days before election day. Although he only planned to create one a day counting down until November 3, more and more people started requesting the signs and now he's made over 200. The signs can be spotted from Springfield to Nashville to Brentwood and Clarksville.Collins is a New Yorker who moved to Tennessee a decade ago and has used this project to see his new home state."A lot of this is getting to know your city," said Collins. "it’s been great to my family part of this was just a love letter to the city and go to places I haven’t been."Collins is doing all of this out of his own pocket and gives away the signs for free. He says as long as it inspires residents to register and vote, it's a job well done."Vote that's it, it's really simple," Collins said, "Exercise the joy and responsibility of being American and vote."The voter registration deadline is October 5. (KGTV) - This weekend's stormy weather grounded, then destroyed a 75-foot Russian-built racing boat once sent to San Diego to race in the America's Cup.Around 7 a.m. Saturday, cellphone video show the large sailboat as it ran aground. Not long after, Lifeguard Captain Sean Casey says the waves went to work."Once it was aground, pretty quickly the mast broke off, and the boat literally broke into two pieces," said Casey.Casey says the boat had been anchored more than two miles away, near the Zuniga Jetty in Point Loma."There were high winds and rough conditions out of Point Loma. Assuming the anchor line just broke," said Casey.The boat was named Age Of Russia.According to a 1992 Los Angeles Times story, it was built in Leningrad for six million rubles. Under current conversion rates, six million rubles is valued at about ,000.A Russian group of yachtmen sent the boat to San Diego in 1992 to compete in the America's Cup, but that group was never sanctioned by race officials to compete. Because the group couldn't afford to bring it back, the boat was slated to taken to be taken to the Miramar Landfill and flattened. But then a buyer came forward.Casey says recently, it had been used for tours of the bay, before its final, unscheduled trip Saturday. Its frantic owner ended up at the beach."Obviously his reaction was sort of shock and dismay. He was very upset when he saw it on the beach," said Casey.Casey says the boat was insured, which means the cleanup costs could be covered."The contractor will likely have to use heavy equipment, dump trucks, to break up the remaining pieces and take it to the landfill," said Casey.Casey says there is an ongoing problem of boats without slips on the bay, being anchored in the Zuniga Jetty, and becoming loose during stormy weather. In 2019, the City Council amended San Diego’s Municipal Code to restrict open-water boat anchoring near Zuniga Jetty Shoal to two hours. 1960

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Coronado residents who felt the need for speed found themselves stuck in traffic Monday as a prop fighter jet from the Top Gun sequel was moved on city streets. The F-14 fighter was hauled through traffic to the Coronado Bridge on its way to East San Diego County about 9 p.m. A witness stuck in the backup told 10News it was a tight squeeze on the small streets. “They had to do a little backing up, and back and forth for a few minutes,” Emily Foster said. “It finally pulled through and missed a parked car by inches.” The jet, which belongs to the San Diego Air and Space Museum Gillespie Field Annex, was used for the filming of Top Gun 2 at Naval Air Station North Island over the winter. During filming, the F-14 never took flight. “You’ll see it move in the movie, but that’s movie stuff,” said Annex manager Jeff Eads. Crews disassembled the jet for its trip from Coronado to East County. “Take wings off of it, the elevators, the horizontal stabilizers,” said Eads, who had the job of putting it back together.Photos posted on the SDASM Annex Facebook page showed the fighter jet being returned to Gillespie Field with the unique Top Gun markings on its side.Air and Space Museum officials were not able to disclose details about the terms of the plane's involvement in the movie. 1324

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Among the sea of cardboard cut-out faces propped up in stands at MLB stadiums across the country is one specific face, present for teams he was never able to see play in person.Joaquin Oliver, his face among those in the crowds at Great American Ballpark in Ohio and 13 other MLB stadiums, was 17 when he was shot and killed in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in 2018. His father, Manuel, purchased cutouts in several different baseball stadiums to support his son's love of baseball and to make a statement about gun violence."I am not a baseball fan, so I was learning everything from him, and I was also creating those moments," said Manuel.Joaquin grew up loving baseball. His father loved the quality time the sport gave them together."I just want everybody to understand that life is about magic moments," said Manuel. "And going to the ballpark with your kids is such a magic moment."Manuel said he hopes fans who see the cutout of his son at GABP and other stadiums will be inspired to do something about gun violence, whether that be through voting, educating themselves, or joining an organization.He also founded Change the Ref, an organization that works to inspire a younger generation to help lead the way to change toward a more peaceful future. Manuel himself continues to work to raise awareness about the Parkland shooting and speaks out against what he calls a "corrupt" gun lobby and the politicians he believes its influences."I'm begging you to do something to prevent that from happening," said Manuel.
