Americans have been sending garbage to landfills for almost 100 years.Since the first one opened in Fresno, California in 1937, today the U.S. hauls about 268 million tons of trash to thousands of active landfills each year.However, it's not without debate over whether these dumps are our best option.A lot of our nation's garbage starts in the home. According to the EPA, paper accounts for 25 percent, food is 15 percent of the waste and plastic amounts to 13 percent.The journey to the landfill involves a few pitstops. After garbage collectors pick up the trash, they take it to sorting facilities, where machines and people in full hazmat suits separate everything. This can be time-consuming, and dangerous.Recyclables are sent off to be reused, and trash is either incinerated to create clean, renewable energy or taken to the landfillLandfill operators follow strict guidelines to help make sure their facilities don't cause any harm. They lay a base layer, several feet deep, below any trash. It's made up of materials like clay, minerals, and charcoal, which help make sure nothing seeps into the ground or water. Trash is strategically layered on top and then buried to help seal it off.In some cases, the sealed pile is covered in cement or asphalt and developed in homes or businesses. But those sealed-off piles still give off greenhouse gas emissions and fumes that can harm the environment and peoples' health.Some companies use technology to reduce emissions by capturing them and turning them into renewable energies. Researchers say even with that technology landfills can still pose hazards.One way to reduce the mountains of trash in landfills is to recycle.Americans throw away .5 billion in recyclable materials each year, including paper, plastic, cardboard, and aluminum products. 1817
Animals have been used as therapy for years, because research has linked them to a decrease in anxiety and depression in pet parents.It is sometimes referred to as the "Pet Effect" by experts and described this way by Mental Health America:"The Pet Effect, also known as the human-animal bond, is the mutually beneficial relationship between people and animals that positively impacts the health and well-being of both. Any pet owner will tell you that living with a pet comes with benefits, including constant companionship, love and affection."A 2016 survey by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute found that nearly 75% of the animal owners they talked with reported mental health improvements from their furry family member.With a global pandemic keeping many of us isolated, is now the time to adopt a pet?"I adopted Sake from the Arizona Humane Society on July 1," said Scottsdale dog owner Randi Chan.Chan said she immediately brought a dog trainer into the mix and created a structured routine, something she did not have just a few months ago."Before I had her, I was probably working like 12 hours every day," Chan said. "Because... I'll take a break for dinner and then I'll be like, 'Well I have nothing better to do. I've already watched everything on Netflix, so I'll guess I'll start working again.'"She knew that likely was not very positive for her mental health.Now, Chan gets fluffy hugs and a reason to get outside safely for their walks."If anything, the pandemic has just raised awareness to the importance of both adoption and fostering," said Arizona Humane Society's Bretta Nelson.They have moved to appointment-only for their adoptions. Once a prospective pet parent sets up their time slot, a representative from the shelter will call them ahead of time to go over what animals they may be interested in."We think with this one-on-one match-making process, you can talk to people about a pet's medical or their behavioral, and they weren't already attached before learning that information," Nelson explained. "So, they were able to make a logical decision."That has helped their return rate for pets drastically decrease, while the number of families fostering has sky-rocketed.However, most people will have to return to work at some point and the pets will have to be left behind.Nelson said that a structured routine that is created the first time they come home will make that transition easier."Set a routine that's going to work, even when you're back at work," Nelson said. "Don't start taking them for walks at 11 a.m. every day if that's not something you can uphold because they're not going to be too happy about that."Chan said she has been practicing putting Sake in her crate a little bit at a time, so she is comfortable and those trips to the park they both love will still be a part of their day-to-day routine."She really definitely brings a smile to my face because she is a very loving dog," Chan said.To learn more about the pets up for adoption at the Arizona shelter, click here. Arlina Allen is a life-recovery coach and podcaster. She’s been sober for 26 years. From her experience, she says the holiday season is often challenging for people recovering from addiction.“I would experience situations or triggers that I didn’t know how to handle," Allen said. That’s why she plans to attend a holiday fellowship marathon on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day offered for free by Lionrock Recovery.“For me personally, Lionrock is my revenge against addiction that took my sister and almost took one of my children,” said Lionrock Recovery Co-founder and CEO Peter Loeb.Father Peter Loeb and daughter Ashley Loeb Blassingame are co-founders of Lionrock. Ashley’s been sober for 15 years and she says she’s here to set an example of what sobriety can be.“Holidays are traditionally tough for anyone in recovery, not least because these occasions typically involve alcohol. In fact, CDC numbers show that December is the most dangerous time of year for drug and alcohol-related deaths”They’re determined to help people looking for recovery – which is why they offer the 15-hour marathon every year, all done virtually.“We were telehealth from the very beginning," Loeb said. "And the ones who are falling off are the ones who are passing away or the ones who are relapsing.”What fuels Arlina’s podcast is the power of people sharing their stories and opening their hearts.“When someone is vulnerable and speaks from their heart, that is a language that passes all boundaries," Allen said. "We get connected and suddenly we feel like we’re not alone or we’re not that different.”It’s a battle that’s so hard. Both Allen and Ashley Loeb Blassingame fully understand that battle. However, there is hope for change.“I am encouraging people to focus on the solution, find connection in any way you can, and put one foot in front of the other whatever that looks like,” Loeb Blassingame said. 3109
Arizona officials have certified Joe Biden’s narrow victory over President Donald Trump in the state.Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs and Republican Gov. Doug Ducey defended the integrity of the election even as lawyers for Trump were across town Monday arguing, without evidence, to nine Republican lawmakers that the election was marred by fraud.Lawsuits and legal action taken by the Trump campaign did not go far in Arizona, in at least one instance, the lawyers dropped a case seeking a recount of Election Day ballots. At Monday's certification event, Ducey said, “We do elections well here in Arizona. The system is strong.”Biden won Arizona by 0.3% of the nearly 3.4 million ballots cast, a margin of just under 10,500 votes. He’s the second Democrat in 70 years to win the state. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- One-tenth of Disneyland employees have recently experienced homelessness while two-thirds of the park’s employees can’t afford three meals a day, according to a union-funded report.Disney officials slammed the report saying it’s politically motivated and that the document is skewed to reflect the position of unions.The report argues that 74 percent of workers at the park can’t pay for basic expenses each month. Similarly, we found it's normal for Disneyland workers to skip meals in order to make ends meet."The report was based on a survey of 5,000 Disneyland employees.
