Restaurants in Los Angeles County will be open for delivery, take-out and drive-thru services only for three weeks beginning Wednesday in the hopes of preventing the spread of COVID-19, according to The Los Angeles Times and KABC-TV.Restaurants, bar, breweries and wineries in LA County had been open with outdoor seating only. However, officials have moved to restrict all in-person dining as cases in the county have spiked in recent weeks — just as they have across the country.Breweries and wineries can continue selling alcohol in a retail setting."To reduce the possibility for crowding and the potential for exposures in settings where people are not wearing their face coverings, restaurants, breweries, wineries and bars will only be able to offer take-out, drive thru, and delivery services," the county's Department of Public Health said in a news release. "Wineries and breweries may continue their retail operations adhering to current protocols. In person dining will not be allowed, at minimum, for the next 3 weeks."The restrictions came after county officials warned that further action would be taken if the county's five-day average of daily cases rose above 4,000 a day. KABC-TV reports that on Sunday, the four-day average sat at 4,097 a day.The restrictions threaten countless restaurant owners in the Los Angeles area, as well as the thousands of people those owners employ. Several restaurant owners told The Los Angeles Times that the restrictions come just as they were expecting a boost in business for the holidays. Some business owners say they are still paying off renovations implemented to expand outdoor dining. In the last week, California has reported about 11,000 new cases of COVID-19 each day — a record since the pandemic began. 1774

President-elect Joe Biden met with his Transition Team's COVID-19 Advisory board for the first time on Monday morning, and delivered remarks following the meeting."I will spare no effort to turn this pandemic around when I'm sworn in on Jan. 20," Biden said.In his remarks, Biden congratulated Pfizer on the company's Monday announcement that early studies show its vaccine candidate is 90% effective in fighting the virus. However, Biden cautioned that even in best-case scenarios, the vaccine won't widely be available for several months. He promised that once vaccine candidates are approved, he will ensure that doses are distributed safely and efficiently. In addition, Biden called on manufactures to ramp up production of personal protective equipment and also said he planned to order more rapid test kits for use across the country. Finally, Biden spent several moments promoting the use of masks, calling them "the most potent weapon against the virus."It doesn't matter who you voted for...it doesn't matter your party or point of view," Biden said. "We could save tens of thousands of lives in the next few months if everyone just wears a mask."The address in Wilmington, Delaware came hours after Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris announced the formation of a COVID-19 Advisory Board as part of their administration's White House Transition Team. The Biden-Harris Transition team said the board would consist of public health experts who will advise both Biden and Harris.“Dealing with the coronavirus pandemic is one of the most important battles our administration will face, and I will be informed by science and by experts,” Biden said in a press release “The advisory board will help shape my approach to managing the surge in reported infections; ensuring vaccines are safe, effective, and distributed efficiently, equitably, and free; and protecting at-risk populations.”The board consists of:CO-CHAIRSDr. David Kessler: Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology and Biostatistics at UCSF. RANDALLSTOWN, Md. -- A 5-month-old boy was sent to an intensive care unit at The John Hopkins Hospital after enduring the kind of attack that many grown adults have not.The attack on Garrison Bailey Borkoski happened just after 1 a.m. Saturday as he and his mother slept in a house on Chapman Road in Randallstown, Maryland.“That adult, at some point and time, got up and went to the bathroom and that’s when the 5-month-old was bitten by a dog in the house, a pit bull,” said Det. Robert Reason of the Baltimore County Police Department. “There were actually several pit bulls in the home at the time this occurred.”There were four pit bulls in the home, which the owner would later tell police have no cages and typically have their roam of the interior of the house. Both mother and child had only moved in a week or two earlier.“There are no charges pending right now,” said Reason. “Based on the investigation, there is no indication that anybody had any intent to cause harm to the child at all, so there are no charges pending right now.”In the aftermath of the attack, paramedics found the baby covered in blood and motionless, but still breathing. It was later determined that Garrison had suffered a large laceration to the top of his head and lacerations to his neck, as well as puncture wounds to the rest of his body, but miraculously, just fours days after the attack, doctors released him from the hospital.“Right now, fortunately, the 5-month-old is home and recovering and doing well, so we’re very, very happy about that,” said Reason.According to the Baltimore County Department of Health, the owners surrendered the four pit bulls, allowing them to be euthanized, but it was later determined only two of the dogs had actually attacked the child. The other two were returned to the owners. This story was originally published by Jeff Hager at WMAR. 1871
