Will Watson, commander, Sector New Orleans. "There’s uncertainty but what you have to do is lean back on your training.” With U.S. Coast Guard stations across the country on standby, Watson said his teams are ready to help whenever and wherever they are needed.“When the time comes, and you face something that you maybe weren’t otherwise prepared for, that’s when you exercise on-scene initiative,” he said. “You think critically. You think creatively. Remain adaptable and flexible and act.”Southeast Louisiana locals are calling the U.S. Coast Guard, “heroes,” saying they saved more than lives during past natural disasters.“One day, I got stuck in a boat and they come over here, five of them come here, and helped me out,” said local fisherman Tony Buffone, who lost his house during Hurricane Katrina -- one of the most deadly and expensive natural disasters to hit U.S. soil.During recent storms, Buffone is now using lessons he learned from the U.S. Coast Guard.“It’s good to have good Coast Guard,” he said. “We got a good Coast Guard crew right there.”As the Gulf Coast deals with another massive hurricane, the U.S. Coast Guard is doing what it does best: staying “always ready”.“We have resources, assets, people from all across the Coast Guard ready to support this fight,” Watson said. “And we’re ready; ready to respond to Hurricane Laura.” 1643

The United States is at the beginning of a second wave of significant job loss.“We are seeing a resurgence in layoffs that has been quite clearly indicated in the last couple of weeks,” said Daniel Alpert, an adjunct professor and senior fellow at Cornell University.Cornell University recently published a study showing about a third of the people who went back to work during the pandemic have now been laid off for a second time. Another 26 percent of workers have been warned by their employers that future furloughs and layoffs may soon come.“The problem is that you get an echo,” said Alpert. “So, if you have a resurgence in layoffs, a decrease in spending, that creates more contraction on the part of businesses, which creates more layoffs. The question is, when can you put a floor under this spiraling situation? It is a classic economic spiral.”The cycle--of job loss eventually leading to more job loss--is causing some to fear it could lead to a third wave of unemployment in a few months. Experts, like Alpert, believe the only way to stop the cycle would be a vaccine or for Congress to come together on another stimulus bill that props up households and businesses until a vaccine is released.“We are very concerned about the current rollercoaster effect on resumed layoffs, but longer term, we are really scared about seeing huge numbers, tens of millions of businesses vanish,” said Alpert.The more waves of unemployment we see, the higher likelihood of that. 1486

The Trump administration has finalized a regulation that overturns Obama-era protections for transgender people against sex discrimination in health care. Friday's action is certain to be challenged in court by LGBTQ groups and others.The policy shift, long-sought by the president’s religious and socially conservative supporters, defines gender as a person’s biological sex. The Obama regulation defined gender as a person’s internal sense of being male, female, neither, or a combination.The Trump administration said that the new rules come with a .9 billion budget reduction over the course of five years. The costs are associated with enforcement efforts. “HHS respects the dignity of every human being, and as we have shown in our response to the pandemic, we vigorously protect and enforce the civil rights of all to the fullest extent permitted by our laws as passed by Congress. We are unwavering in our commitment to enforcing civil rights in healthcare,” Roger Severino, Director of the Office for Civil Rights at HHS.The Human Rights Campaign already announced it will sue the Trump Administration to stop the move.“We cannot and will not allow Donald Trump to continue attacking us. Today, the Human Rights Campaign is announcing plans to sue the Trump administration for exceeding their legal authority and attempting to remove basic health care protections from vulnerable communities including LGBTQ people. And, to add insult to injury, the administration finalized this rule on the anniversary of the Pulse shooting, where a gunman killed 49 people in an LGBTQ nightclub,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “LGBTQ people get sick. LGBTQ people need health care. LGBTQ people should not live in fear that they cannot get the care they need simply because of who they are.
