As calls for police reform permeate among supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Fraternal Order of Police announced on Friday it has endorsed Donald Trump for president.The FOP, which is the nation’s largest police union with 355,000 members, endorsed Trump for the second time. The union has not endorsed a Democrat for president since 1996. The FOP endorsed George W. Bush in 2004 and 2004, John McCain in 2008, and did not issue a formal endorsement in 2012.“During his first four years, President Trump has made it crystal clear that he has our backs,” FOP President Patrick Yoes said. “Our members know that he listens to the concerns of our brothers and sisters in uniform and is able to make tough decisions on the issues most important to law enforcement. An early analysis of census data shows California and New York may lose a seat in the House, while Florida would gain two. This could mean Florida in the near future would have more electoral votes than New York.The analysis was done by William Frey, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute, a nonprofit public policy organization, based on population estimates from mid-2020 released by the Census Bureau.Frey said the estimates released by the Census Bureau show that between July 2019 and July 2020, the population in the U.S. grew by .35%. That’s the lowest annual population growth rate since the turn of the last century, and that could mean the decade 2010-2020 may have the lowest decade growth rate in centuries.This low rate of growth and some “educated estimates” from Frey on new state-level data, could mean that seven states gain representatives in Congress and ten states lose some.One result of the Census is calculating the number of seats in the House of Representatives a state should have. Every decade, the Census Bureau adjusts the number of seats each state receives based on changes in population, the process is called reapportionment.Frey estimates that Texas will gain three representatives in the House, Florida wil gain two, and Arizona, Montana, Colorado, North Carolina and Oregon will gain one. Meanwhile, Alabama, California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Rhode Island could all lose one representative, according to Frey’s estimates.Changing the number of seats in the House also changes how many votes the state gets in the Electoral College; electoral votes are the number of seats a state has in the House plus two senators.California currently has 55 electoral votes, with the next highest as Texas with 38 votes currently. New York and Florida are next, with 29 each; if New York were to lose one and Florida gain two, it would be the first time Florida had more votes than New York and would make Florida the third most represented state in the House.“This reapportionment will also affect the Electoral College in future presidential elections. There are a mix of “red” and “blue” states among those gaining and losing seats. Thus, it is difficult to predict how these changes will benefit future Republican and Democratic presidential candidates,” Frey wrote in his analysis.Frey’s estimates are based on early data shared by the Census Bureau. So you'll have to be flexible," Stanger said.Consumer Reports has been around since 1936 and works to create a "fair" marketplace for all consumers. Stanger is an appliance expert and says some of the backlogs have to do with the pandemic and global factory shutdowns in the earlier part of the year.Add that to increased use of home appliances and increased demand, and you've got a problem."The companies are trying to ramp it up. They still, in sone cases, cannot find parts," Stanger said. "I have been told by one of our retailers that there are a couple of manufacturers that are not taking new orders until the end of September. So, they're trying, but it's a real grind."The Repair Association supports the aftermarket of "technology products" — anything with a computer chip. Gay Gordon-Byrne, the association's executive director, says the U.S. is overly reliant on China for all electronics."Everything from toys to tractors, refrigerators, cell phones, industrial controls — it is a massive problem if you can't fix that equipment," she said.Gordon-Byrne says that since things are backordered, there's a huge demand for repairs — which creates more problems."About 90% of the stuff on the market today can't be fixed — it either can't be fixed because it's made not to be fixed, or you can't fix it without the (original equipment manufacturer) because they want to make sure they're the only people that can fix it," Gordon-Byrne said.That means consumers are forced to buy new appliances — or, in this case, wait out the backlog.Gordon-Byrne suggests supporting independent, small appliance businesses and repair shops.Consumer Reports has similar advice."We recommend that, in addition to looking at the big box store, that you look at your local independent appliance dealer.
