LA JOLLA (KGTV): Researchers at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center and the La Jolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology have teamed up to find a new way to fight cancer.They've created a vaccine that can help teach the immune system how to attack only cancer cells and leave the rest of the body alone."Patients will be able to tolerate their therapy much better than they have so far on conventional approaches," says Dr. Stephen Schoenberger from the La Jolla Institute.Each vaccine is highly personalized to the patient. According to a release from UC San Diego, the vaccines "defines the neoantigens – foreign protein fragments recognized by the immune system – in a patient’s cancer. With neoantigens identified, the team can identify peptides – strings of amino acids – that can be used to create a vaccine to stimulate a protective immune system response."Simply put, the new vaccine takes information from a patient's immune system and the tumor and uses it to help white blood cells to fight it."We're giving them life and giving them hope," says Dr. Schoenberger.The first patient in the clinical trial is Tamara Strauss. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015 and went through chemotherapy and surgery."It was brutal," says Strauss. "It's been three and a half years of hell."Strauss' parents helped fund the clinical trial with a million donation. She says she feels fortunate they could do that, but also hopeful that it helps others down the road."I really pray that this vaccine and personalized form of treatment really does change the paradigm of cancer treatment," says Strauss.During the trial, ten patients will get three doses of the vaccine. They'll also be on Keytruda, an immune system boosting drug for up to two years. Their health will be monitored for five years to determine the vaccine's effectiveness. 1871

KILLEEN, Texas -- The U.S. Army and law enforcement in Texas are asking for the public's help in locating another missing Fort Hood soldier.Family members say they have not heard from Sgt. Elder Fernandes, 23, since Monday, August 17."I don't know where he is at right now. I don't know what he's feeling, I don't know if he's hurt. I don't know what's going on. I just know he's a good kid. He would never disappear and not tell his family where he is at," said Ailina Fernandes, the soldier's mother.The soldier was reported missing on Wednesday, August 19. He was last seen by his staff sergeant Monday afternoon when he dropped him off at his residence located in the 2700 block of Woodlands Drive in Killeen.Fort Hood released a statement late Friday."We can confirm that there is an open investigation of abusive sexual contact involving Sgt. Fernandes," the statement read. "The chain of command takes all allegations of sexual harassment and assault seriously. The unit sexual assault response coordinator has been working closely with Sgt. Fernandes, ensuring he was aware of all his reporting, care, and victim advocacy options. The unit also facilitated his transfer from a unit who has recently deployed to a different unit within the brigade to ensure he received the proper care and ensure there were no opportunities for reprisals. KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The oldest living U.S. Marine celebrated her 107th birthday over the weekend.The U.S. Marine Corps wished Sgt. Dorothy “Dot” Cole a happy birthday in a special video posted on Facebook on Saturday.The USMC says Cole was born on Sept. 19, 1913 in Warren, Pennsylvania, and enlisted in the Marine Corps after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.“Everyone was out doing something, the women helping The Red Cross or even in churches, they were knitting things, so I decided that I wanted to do something and I would go into the Marine Corps,” said Cole in the video.Cole was part of a female integration into what were considered male-dominated career fields within the Marine Corps during World War II, according to the USMC. That allowed the Marines to free up personnel to fight the war in the Pacific.Cole now lives in Kannapolis, North Carolina, according to the city.Happy 107th Birthday to Dot Cole! Sgt.
